HUGETT 1975 mm We wan fed fo dedicate our yearbook to someone who was gorgeously beautiful, possessed a sparkling personality, had a witty sense of humor and never gave any homework. Unfortunately we could not find a suitable candi¬ date. However, a consensus revealed that Mr. Cornacchioli came the closest. As a teacher Mr. Cornacchioli has made us laugh while making us learn. His involvement with the student body extends from sports coach to student council advisor. Mr. Cornacchioli was the motivation behind Homecoming. It is an event that he as well as we as students can be proud of. We appreciate his enthusiasm and in return we dedicate our yearbook to him. 2 ia DEMOCR Jk HjuStJ. itaUA DEMOCRACY Kw it 3 V- . . k, .tj J 1 I . •: vpf 1 : s ► ' ■ . .‘4 •: 1 . - v ■ :• 1 [ ' ■ j • 1 yWl -H ' .y ’j ' f I ; L I • ■ i 1 1 jp? ■ 11 T ‘ Hf §1 fc M i, ft i r 1 , V ■ t, _____ 1 i umm v MAI 1 L ' r ffifl , 1 T?1 l 17- V Ijg . § W M ’ ' II 1 1 ■ ' I- JHbnjl | 4 41 U- Mif . .7 r iJ i ' uHa Li ;L i; W A r5fr i -s 1 1 « i Take time to work — it is the price of success. We need your feedback in order to improve our school for the classes to follow you. We wish you well as you step out to prove your worth: to your¬ self, your family, and the wider community. Many of you will grow to assume leadership positions in society. Some will break loose from parental and community sanctions, reject all author¬ ity in our society, and consider yourselves “free,” concerned only with what YOU want. Your freedom may be exhilarating until you meet others whose view of freedom is similar. I believe that you will eventually conclude th at their rights stop where yours begin, and vice-versa. Furthermore, the “many will learn soon, and the “some will learn later, that authority very much involves responsibility for, and service to, those led. The REaL leader does not sit down to eat until he knows that there is food for all who work for him. That kind of authority DESERVES our respect. 20 To the Members of the Class of 1 975 As you complete your high school education, you will discover that the real journey of your lives has just begun. As you travel the paths you have chosen, I feel that experience will teach you that life is not a book with old age as a last chapter, but rather a series of short stories, each with its own unfolding. Through each new adventure on the way I know that you will learn that true happiness comes to those who give fully of themselves to what they believe in and to their fellowman. We live in a time that offers unparalleled opportunities for each individual and for our nation. I am confident that you will take hold of these opportunities to achieve greater good for your¬ selves and for our country. Where there is life, there is hope; and in you — the graduates of our high schools — there is the fullness of life. Your fellow citizens place their hope in you, and on their behalf I wish you every success for the future. Neal T. Skillings Principal Emeritus To the Members of the Class of 1 975, It’s a distinct privilege to have the opportunity each year to write a few words of parting to a graduating class. The very act of writing such a paragraph requires that you look back and remember with fondness the accomplishments and the good times associated with each class. Too often in the day-to-day encounters with persons we get too involved with the problems and the struggles and it takes an effort to step back and recall the good and solid relationships that have been built. I look back with considerable joy at your years at Wachusett and look ahead to even greater achievements from each of you in the years to come. It is my hope that each of you will find the time to step back and look in retrospect at your years at Wachusett. The friends made, the lessons learned, and the relationships forged with teachers, administrators and others will, I am sure, mean even more to you as time goes by. Be assured that we will continue to think of you and ask after your progress as you embark on yet another chapter in your life. My best to each and everyone of you — may the future be bright and your efforts be rewarded. Keep in touch. Very truly yours. Harold M. Lane, Jr. Director of Secondary Education and Principal 21 ADMINISTRATION Robert Lavenburg — Assistant Principal VfV SECRETARIES: Anne Haynes Betty Carlson Shirley Bjornlund 22 ; VOL. 6, NO. 6 HOLDEN, MASSACHUSETTS PRINTED BY WACHUSETT PRESS MAY, 1975 SENIORS VISIT PUTNAM Seniors from Mrs. Plaza ' s Psy¬ chology II classes visited the Dempsey Center in Putnam, Connecticut on March 24 and 25. Dempsey, a modern institu¬ tion for the mentally retarded, succeeds in changing the morbid view that an institution is a place for the unwanted, and helpless. The facilities at Dempsey are the best and the student-teacher ratio (8 to 1) makes for a close personal relationships between the pupils and teachers. The staff at Dempsey hold the highest regard for those they work with. The mentally retarded are people, human beings with feelings and emotions just like ourselves; the people at Dempsey realize this fact and work to have other people come to the same conclusion. Wachusett seniors left Dempsey feeling happy and hopeful - happy at what is being done to help the mentally • retarded. LOOK BACK Despite a low interest in Greaser Day and a heavy snowfall, atten¬ dance was good at the Spanish National Honor Society ' s nostalgic evening, March 19. The greasers heard many golden oldies by the many golden greats of the ' 50’s. SPIRIT OF ' 76 Wachusett’s Bicentennial events took place on Culture Day, Conflict Day and Consolidation Day beginning April 16. From movies on life in Williamsburg to real-life revolutionists appropriately represented in costumes by several teachers the program was both educational and fun. Patriotic blood was also shed for the Red Cross blood drive. Teachers gave freely of their time as guest instructors, and students joined in what appeared to be interest and certainly cooperation. On April 18 Mr. Howard Greis conducted a panel in the auditorium consisting of U. S. Representative Edward Boland: State Sonator Robert Hall; State Representative Edward Harrington; Holden Town Manager William Kennedy; WTAG News Director Donald Richards; Father Louis Dionne, past president of Assumption College and a man who spent several years in the Soviet Union; Mr. Joseph Grib- ouski and Prof. Stanley Gaunt, experts on food supply and men knowledge¬ able about its implications on the Third World. The panel discussed America’s past and its future direc¬ tions. SOPHOMORES ENTERTAINED Wachusett sophomores who study Tennessee Williams’ GLASS MENA¬ GERIE were fortunate that the “Theatre-in-the-CIassroom” perform ers of the Worcester Children’s Theatre were able to come twice to Wachusett Regional High School: on April 1 and again on April 8. These students were entertained by the gentleman caller” scene from the Williams play. Since Wachu¬ sett’s only obligation was to provide the reasonable facsimile of a couch, Wachusett is particularly g ateful for this opportunity for many of its sophomore English st dents. BLOOD NEEDED Massachusetts uses npproximately 1,300 pints of blood ear. New techniques have made it ?ble to separate the various blood ompo- nents so that each is used as ;oecifi- y needed for each type of pat- ier . Thus, each pint of blood is used for three different patients--or a total of more than 3,000 patients a day. CAN YOU PASS THIS TEST? 1. In your opinion does a telephone really need ten numbers? 2. Granted, we don’t have an adequate football or base¬ ball field, or even a track,.we some how manage to get by. The football team was nothing spectacular, but if you take into consideration what they had to work with, ycy’ll agree that they did quite well...A new trophy was given by the team, in memory of • Eric Peterson. The trophy will be given to the year ' s end outstanding lineman...The girls field hockey team proved to be really strong this year. The girls won most of their games, and only faced a few de¬ feats...Ice Hockey again is another story. We didn’t lose many games but the games we lost were usually by a large margin. The highlight of the season was when the Green Machine beat the Auburn Dandies 4-2...The boys basketball team won and lost its share of games this year. They, too, were cramped for space, as five teams had to battle for court time...The girls however overcame this problem, and went on to win the Clark Tournament...Track is a popular sport at WRHS, whether it be cross country, winter, or spring. We have an outstanding track team, that usually takes more than it’s share of honors...Spring has sprung and so has baseball, (softball too, for that matter). The baseball team has started out well, with our just two league games ending in victories ...The girls, however, lost their open¬ ing game, but never the less they look promising...Tennis is another favorite sport around here. Both teams seem to be ready to challange anyone. This brings all our sports from September to June up to date. Maybe next year our teams will be bigger, and our facilities better. HOLDEN GOING PLACES WITH THE CHORUS The chorus, like the band is go¬ ing places under the direction of Mrs. Grace Reidy. There are 60 stu¬ dents in the chorus: 11 seniors, 9 juniors, 15 sophomores, and 25 freshmen. (When all the upper class- men have been graduated there will be a strong force to lead the chorus). Among some of the good things the chorus has done for us have been joint concerts with the band, a bicentennial special concert, “Cry for Freedom”, and participated in by other groups, too, involvement in all the New England concerts. Six members of the chorus were in the All New. Eng. concert, 5 in all state. (Janet Fifield, Madeline Wil¬ son, Cheryl Pierce, Ira Wilson and Craig Smith were in All State. Janet Fifield had the honor of be¬ ing in All Eastern. The Chorus plans included an ex¬ change concert with another chorus of 85 members, in Essex, Junction, Vermont May 16, 17, and 18 and a concert with The Essex Educational Center here June 1. Director of this group is Mrs. Beverly Cadmus. Further plans for the Wachusett chorus involved the Artists-in-Resi- dence program in recital which Maryann Kane, Lynne Barriere, Susan Bennett, Juanita Hine, Chris Howard, Janet Fifield, Robin Wills, Craig Smith, Marci Wold and Kathy Wilson. THE GIRLS’TRACK TEAM had two meets during spring vacation. In the first at Leominster 5 girls took 1st place: Karen Doolittle in the 220 and high jump. Dale Ben¬ nett in the javelin, Sue Martel in the mile, and Penny Peck in the discus. In the District III Relays the girls’ team placed sixth of 22 schools. First place in the distance medley were Sue Martel, Mary Alice Ther¬ iault, Linda Besnia and Dale Ben¬ nett. Third place on the sprint med¬ ley were Karen Doolittle, Pat Tod, Debbie Belanger and Kathy Warren. Fourth place in the hurdle relay were Kathy Warren, Karen Olsen, Dale Bennett and Cindy Price. Fourth in the javelin were Martha Peck, Dale Bennett and Donna Lud- den. Fifth place in the shot put were Debbie Lamoureaux, Gwen Richards and Penny Peck. Dear Editor, I think you should do an article on student depression in the Wach- usett regional area not only in high school but at the junior high. Wp teens have more troubles today than ever before. So far two people in one week have committed suicide, and more young people may follow if something isn’t done. I think all the members of guidance, the fa¬ culty, and the student body should get together and figure these pro¬ blems out. From some of my friends I hear that most problems 1. People always cutting them down. 2. Not ever anything to do. 3. The school is not one but many different groups like jerks, freaks, and middle men. 4. No Spirit. 5. Parent troubles. 6. Can’t concentrate in such a rest¬ less school. All of us want help and something done about name-calling and separa¬ tion. Suicide preventionist DANCE CONCERT HELD Two exciting evenings were en¬ joyed at Wachusett when the Dance Concert group presented “The Age of Dance’’ on March 21 and 22. Directed and choreographed by Miss Mary Wanamaker, the group had many high spots, “Age of Aquarius” and the finale, “On a Carousel” be¬ ing outstanding. Costumes were colorful and crea- Dear Gabby, My problem is this school.. It’s so boring. I get good marks but my social life has alot to be desired. I can’t stand how everyone cuts every¬ one down, and how we are not one school but divided into two; the jerks and the big shots, and the freaks. I’m really depressed. I need help and hope you can give me a sensible answer. Sincerely, Super Freak P.S.S. Please print so maybe there’ll get the idea? Dear Super Freak, Do you think this school is made on only jerks and freaks? I hope not. Many students would not like to be put down that way by you. If you do get good marks, it shows that you are capable of doing things. Why don’t you get involved in some activity? There are plenty that might interest you especially at this time of year. It does not however have to do with the school. The towns have both spring and summer activities which night interest you. Another suggestion might be to change the group that you hang around with. Get outside your “gang” and see the people. Everyone is different and you just need to know a track star or a football player or a member of the spring musical cast. There are some (alot) of great kids at WRHS which do not fall into your groups. Hope I’ve helped. Gabby PIE EATING CONTEST TREMENDOUS SUCCESS In spring, The Wachusett Swim Team held a fund raising event, a Pie Eating Contest. Although the pie eating contest eventually turned into a pie hurling contest, three teams did manage to finish. The Teacher-Student team of Mr. Corna- chiolli and Charlie Gove were first, followed closely by the Student team of Bill Green and Brad Couni- han and the Teacher team of Mr. Leonard and Mr. Rasku. The con¬ test raised $130 for the Swim Tearn The Swim Team who participated in the contest were Superintendents Mr. Yaglou and Mr. Farrelly, the champion pie hurling team of Jim Hunt and Rick Vanasse, as well as those who paid admission. And Mrs. Linda Radimer, this year ' s ad¬ visor to the swim team. FRESHMEN At harvest time The crop is gathered Amazing how the one small seed Has grown into memories. The basket ' s full Of succulent rewards For the toil that consumed our lives It is all ours that we reap. The harvest ends Spring — we plant again And attend the growth of our lives And come fall the harvest ' s in. To Live Quietly To live quietly is only a mockery of living, for to live you must take life by the sorrows and wring from it a lasting joy that will stay with you till tomorrow V. Williams Spring In the spring one week out of one merely month, a funny feeling grows upon me as the moss runs over rocks, clinging closely. Knowing that this erie feeling comes, I should lake action to prevent it, But I really don ' t know how. I ' m lost in a milky fog that, wraps itself around my feeble feet, and tediously tries, to pull me down. Penelope Rochette 122 A Memory She sat in fatigued silence her gentle eyes raw with age She once spoke of life and law and hope; Her wisdom becoming my truth And I loved her as I loved my God. She looked beyond me — engaged in a dreaded journey I understood but others questioned She was waiting alone as she watched the hourglass spill its seeds of time upon a motionless heap of memories passed. It was through her death that I fulfilled a new truth. With luck, one day, my wisdom will benefit another as Hers did mine. Carolyn Dunn Frogs They rule the swamp pond life Sitting on their green flowered islands, They look like royal kings with green lace. Yes, they are sly green creatures. Kim Lengas Dirt I would love to be a dirt It must be a blast To sit there on the cold hard clay And watch the worms go past. Steve Gross 124 Love Lost How could I have loved you for so long Without you returning it It was like a sad song. Me, alone without you Is like a friendship lost among the dew. So listen to me, my long lost friend and you will hear A cry, so soft a cry, from one who has lost her love for Living Please, please, I beg you just come near And try to do a little giving. Peggy Calcia Without End The sea runs on without end, then the game of life begins. Gome people live quickly, others take time, and our experiences create lines and Impressions so our faces, like the sand show what happens in our souls. Charlene Jepsen 127 Death I walked upon the hill with tired feet My eyes were blank and could not see the sun As up I trod into the rising flame Which engulfed my frame and gave it pause And then upon the blazing crest My feet were planted And I looked down into a fragrant valley Full of daisies and purple asters Washing their feet in sunny brooks I saw the tall guardians of The flowers bow with love as I passed beneath their piney boughs On my way to the quiet calm That was the center of the field And there I flung my weary body down To rest forever between the clouds And daisy sprinkled ground. The Winter Track Team is coed. Maybe that explains the success of the team — the boys are always chasing the girls or vice-a-versa. Regardless of the team’s source of motivation it is evident from their many wins that they are definitely a dedicated team. This dedication was evident in their team spirit as well as their accumulated victories. This team of all juniors will be assured of more success next year as most of the girls will be returning. A great team effort was shown throughout the season. The girls forged ahead into the District III where they were defeated in overtime by North in the quarterfinals. The team showed its championship caliber as they went into the Clark Tournament where they faced the tough Holy Name team in the very first qualifying game. They later defeated the second placed team from the District III, Gardner, to win the Clark Tournament.
