SCHOOL Holden, Massachusetts Holden • Paxton • Princeton • Rul Rutland • Sterling cl uv-ATION • EDUCATORS p. 78 DAVID RYAN — an educator and a professional in his field, yet one who takes pleasure in laughing with his students. Along with his “phrase for the day” he has insti¬ tuted other traditions important to him and to those who know him. He is a master in the art of teaching and has the willingness to learn from his students. We want to dedicate our year¬ book to him because of what he taught us about living, an art that will remain with us long after we have acquired the wisdom to pass that knowledge on. 5 imii r 1973 — A time to reflect upon these school years as great ones of associa¬ tion with the people and experiences that made them so. 8 In September of 1969 we embarked on this often discouraging but always enlightening jour¬ ney. We came running from five directions with anxieties and expectations of the place, its peo¬ ple and the year. Giggly, scrawny girls huddled in the comers of the Dungeon comparing summer tans and back-to-school outfits while shy boys reddened at the mere thought of the girls. One question was spinning its way through all of our minds: Where do I buy the elevator tickets?” With puzzled expressions on our faces and sched¬ ules clutched in our sweaty hands, we wondered how everyone knew we were freshmen. n We have come a long way from Friday night school dances, being seen-but-not-heard and J. V. sports. While Ralph Nader s consumer cru¬ sade battled pollution and the auto industry, we battled for and won a relaxed dress-code and study hall. 14 We rewrote school rules while Hollywood rewrote the alphabet — G, GP R, and X. A young heroine sobbed ' Love means never having to say you re sorry while a certain seagull sang You too can fly!” 15 Dramatic talent in our class boomed with the successes of Oliver, Annie Get Your Gun, Flower Drum Song, The Crucible, and The Boyfriend. The choruses and danc¬ ers backed talented actors in the musical productions while the leads of The Crucible capably portrayed the tragic tone of the drama. 16 17 Along with other senior privileges , we were able to select courses from a broadened curriculum — anything from Co-ed Foods to Black Impact. The school sponsored a formal sex education class, but attempted to stamp out the informal sessions in the corridor. 19 sirs isri KEEP ns rs S3S M. ■■. ■■■■■ 20 Time was not spent jitter-bugging to the Platters but boogying at concerts. Woodstock united the youth cult, Archie Bunker united the establishment, but My Lai horrified all. Four rock giants died and the Beatles resided at their own funeral. Nevertheless , the Stones kept on rolling, appearing in Boston for a sellout show. 22 Closer to home we paid a dime to hear our favorite song on the juke box while munching on snack-bar goodies. Regardless of Stillman, organic food and rr Weight Watchers ” the cafeteria was still in business. A headline screamed , rr Buggy Cake at Wachusett!” and we had fruit cocktail for months. 23 mm Beyond the narrow confines of traditional academ¬ ics, no abstract knowledge could have been more impor¬ tant than involvement with life, reaction with people or pursuit of interests. The many activities that offered membership spanned the interest scope of everyone. 26 YEARBOOK STAFF YEARBOOK STAFF: C. Olsen, P. Welsh, M. Wyrebeck, J. Jordan, B. Honan, M. Marini, L. It was a new experience for many and a surprising one for the teams which Wachusett would face. The newly acquired team was fortunate enough to get the ex-coach of Quabbin Regional High School, Charles Campbell of Rutland. The soccer team had a testing first year schedule, facing a good many of the top teams in the Wachusett area. The team, along with its Most Valuable Player, Vaughn Collins, showed all the schools which they played, that Wachusett will be tough competition in a year or two. The 1972-73 Green Machine surprised everyone at the start of the season by being undefeated in the first three games. The small and inexperienced team was then suddenly shaken by injuries and sickness to key players, resulting in one discour¬ aging loss after another. Shuffling around the lineup a few times settled down the players and got them back into winning form. Rallying late in the second half of the season to reach the post-season play-offs proved to have been in vain, for the District III committee decided not to invite our team to partici¬ pate. Despite the way the season went, Wachusett boasted three outstanding players in the league. Captain Steve Granger, and goalie Dave White made the All-Star team with assistant captain Charlie Johnson receiving an honorable mention. CHEERLEADERS: R. MacDuff, N. Pope, G. Russell, A. Hirvi, P. WINTER TRACK This year’s Winter Track squad competed under the leadership of vet¬ eran Coach Fred Warren and first-year assistant Jack Hayden. The team was determined not to be a losing club and proved it, finishing with a 6-win, 5- loss record, with the Class of ’73 trackmen leading the way. They included shot-putters Steve Renaud and Dave French, Wachusett’s second best ever; and high jumpers Jim Kerxhalli and Mark Hume, who was also a hurdler. Co-captains Jack Mullen and Jim Meagher led the squad’s sprinters and in the longer runs Co-captain Chris Carlson was the leader as well as setting the school indoor 2 mile record at 9:51. The 1972-73 Winter Track team will be remembered as the start of a new string of winning teams. This year it is fair to say that the entire state will be watching the Class of ’73 or more precisely those who turn eighteen, to see how well they handle the new privileges responsibilities legally placed upon them in the areas of voting and drinking. Many of us who have decried the inconsistency of asking a young man to give his life for his country on the one hand, but of refusing to serve him a drink on the other, earnestly hope that the young people will show themselves maturely responsible. You are mov¬ ing into this area against a backdrop of the poor voting showing of last fall and the poor driving fatalities record of other states. Will you put your words into action? Peace be with you. Keep in touch. Edward P. Yaglou Superintendent of Schools Mr. Peter Farrelly, Associate Superintendent Ml Mr. William F. Carey, Assistant Superintendent 80 Mr. David L. Johnson, Business Manager To Members of the Class of 1973 Your high school years began with man conquering space and stepping out on the moon; they encompassed a period of bitterness and discontent that raged around the conduct of the longest military action in our country’s history; and they end amidst renewed hope that man can find lasting peace and brotherhood. These past four years have also been a time of youth — eighteen year olds received the right to vote and hold public office and young people by the thousands made their presence felt regarding issues of local, national and international importance. And in the midst of this you have labored in individual ways to complete this phase of your life’s edu¬ cation, while at the same time you have laughed and fought and cried just like all of those who came before you. No one will deny that the great events of your time have helped to mold you nor that the education you received will play a major role in determining your futures. My fervent will for all of you is that you will take seriously the opportunities afforded you by the education you have received and by the land in which you live. I trust and hope that in the years ahead as you look back on this period of your life you will remember Wachusett with fondness and appreciation. Harold M. Lane, Jr. Director of Secondary Education T T .SWi 11 i n as vJ Neal T. Skillings Principal To the Members of the Class of 1973 As you graduate from Wachusett Regional High School, all our best wishes go with you. Whether you enter industry or the armed services, go on to institutions of higher learning or become a housewife, you should be better fitted for the future because of your years here. Wachusett, from its inception, has been an outstanding school prod¬ ucing an outstanding product. Certainly, the Class of 1973 is no excep¬ tion. Times have changed, teachers and students have changed, the cur¬ riculum has continually changed, but through it all the high standard of excellence has been maintained. You should be well equipped for suc¬ cess in the future. If there is anything in later years that we can do to assist you in attaining this success, be assured that we shall definitely be eager to help. To one and all, may your years ahead be happy and profitable. 81 The GODFATHER!!!?! Would you believe 36D? . . and that’s the truth! Plbbth!!!” 209 When our high school experience is over, we outwardly say Thank God and inwardly shake at the thought of starting another journey. For some it will be freshman year again and for others it will be a venture into the dog-eat-dog , nine-to-five-gimme-an-alka-selt¬ zer world. Coming back to Wachusett will be an experience. Things, people, and places will have changed, leaving nothing familiar for us to hide behind or hold onto. But high school is part of us and an experience that will remain with us long after we hear our last D-hall list and 2:30 bell. 213 .If ' f To sneak a final look as we leave might drive us crazy as the whole journey explodes. ;vv, But in our minds we ' ll look back a thousand times although we vowed we never would. 215 “O Zarathustra,” the animals said, “to those who think as we do, all things themselves are dancing: they come and offer their hand and laugh and flee — and come back. Everything goes, everything comes back; eternally rolls the wheel of being. Everything dies, everything blossoms again; eternally runs the year of being. Everything breaks, everything is joined anew; eternally the same house of being is built. Everything parts, everything greets every other thing again; eternally the ring of being remains faithful to itself. In every Now, being begins; round every Here rolls the sphere there. The center is everywhere. Bent Is the path of eternity.” Nietzsche !i ‘ ss ‘ caas4C Wachusett Regional High School Annual 371.8 MOU 1973 C3 468 Wachusett Reg. H.S. Library
