LIBRARY J VACHUSETT REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Wuchusett Regional High School Holden, Massachusetts 1971 Advisor: Harry Lengas Co-editors: Debl)y Eld, Elaine Sanderson, Sheila Greenlaw Siflirriiai Contents Faculty Seniors Who ' s Wh Organizatio Sports Dedication We the class of 1971 proudly dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Harold Lane. In his first months here at Wachusett, he has proven to be an able administrator. But more than this, he has been a source of warmth and genuine concern for our school and its students. Many changes have come about thanks to his open-mindedness and imagi¬ nation. It seems suitable, therefore, to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Lane and express our feelings about him. The class of 1971 hopes that he may find the same satisfaction here that he has given to us. Edward P. Yaglou THIS IS « 3 ' oB For-.. SUPERiwTeypgjrrl To the class of 1971 Most of us are concerned with change and improvement in our schools, our government, our homes. How long does change take? Dictatorship decrees change and it happens, on the surface at least. Whereas in a democracy, gaining public concensus takes time. Each person feels sure that if he were dictator, he’d decree the proper changes, however then we would all worry about who’s going to be dictator. For two hundred years we have tolerated the sluggish pace of democratic concensus in the faith that the collective wisdom of the citizenry is better than the uncertainty of who is to be the dictator and what errors in judgment he might make. That’s “the system” for us in the United States. Each of our ideas must pass the test: Can I convince 51% of the voters that it is a wise move ? So now, as you graduates step out to participate in the larger society, your former teachers will be watching with interest. Let us see if your ideas are good enough to pass the test. And let us see if you are willing to work hard enough to achieve that necessary concensus. This kind of thinking would seem to be an effective approach to our shared wish—for each other and for the world—Peace. iries: standing—D. Sherblom, M. Pearson, M. Wernholm, B. Dymon, J. Masu V. Skillings—Principal To the class of 1971 Having nearly completed a successful four-year career at Wachusett, you are now about to begin a new phase of your life. As was true, also here in high school, this new phase will be only as successful as you care to make it. If you have worked to your full capacity through high school, you should be well prepared for the future. Continue to work diligently and to keep your stan¬ dards high. Success will be the inevit¬ able result. Wherever you go; Whatever you do; may good fortune always be with you. My very best wishes to you all. Neal T. The next week after leading 7-6 at half time, the mountaineers bowed to the determined Tomahawks. The game at Clin¬ ton proved to be the turning point of the season as the mountaineers offense felt its potential. Against Doherty, the mountain¬ eers collected its second consecutive shut¬ out at Foley Stadium. School history was made by beating the wildcats for the first time. The Red Raiders of Athol arrived to edge the Mountaineers in the final quarter. Wachusett got back on the right track the following game by downing Burncoat. We were defeated by Southbridge for the first time in 16 games. Turkey day was cele¬ brated by a big 6-0 win. The Mountaineers finished the second winning season in a row with a 5-3-1 record. With a few position changes to distribute the strength, the team had a slow start posting a record of 3-3-1 after seven games. With aggressive forechecking, great positional play, and a super team effort, the Green Machine started up its engine to begin a long winning streak. The tre¬ mendous balance of the club enabled them to wear down the opposing defensemen thus making it easier to score goals.
