This magazine recently decided to do an article on the contemporary Ameri¬ can high school. After much discussion, we decided to devote the article to a study of what is generally considered the finest American high school to¬ day— ' Wachusett Regional, of Holden, Massachusetts. We assigned one of our ablest staff reporters, Beth Rugg, to go to Wachusett and live there for one day as a student. Following is her report. I arrived at Wachusett at ten minutes before eight through the under¬ ground tube connecting Wachusett with the thirty-eight communities it now serves. The underground system is the most advanced of any in the country, thanks to its co-designers, Paul Arell and George Fisler. The trains, which have cars engineered by the renowned Richard Lanney, travel at a speed of close to eight hundred miles per hour, reducing the time between Sterling and Wachusett to only about one minute. Each student is assigned a seat in advance, and thus there is never any need for a person to have to stand up or crowd into an already-occupied seat, as was the case in the ancient days of school buses. Once the student arrives at the underground station he walks to the main concourse, from which he rides the moving sidewalk to whichever building his first class is in. The main concourse is named after one of Wachusett ' s most generous benefactors, Leif Westerlund, who provided the school with much of the money for such projects as the underground, the ski hill, the nuclear reactor (which is housed in William Ream Hall), and the moving sidewalk. My day at Wachusett began with a class in Marcia Seifert Hall of Mathe¬ matics. The visiting lecturer for the day was Dr. Steve Briggs, the famous Ox¬ ford expert on algebra, who was scheduled to deliver a talk on quaternions. I learned from some of the students in the class that already that week they had had talks by two other visiting lecturers—Dr. Susan Hart of the Univer¬ sity of California at Los Angeles, and Dr. Greg Spinney, the calculus expert. By this time one of the many innovations I had noticed since my last visit to the school was the absence of any bells. It seemed that the administration felt that the students themselves should bear the responsibility for getting to class on time, without any help. Furthermore, even if the students did not get to class on time, they were not penalized. The only penalties came in the form of lower exam grades for those students who had missed too many classes. After the lecture on quaternions, I had half an hour left before my next class, so I stopped in one of the many little lounges where students may go between classes to smoke, drink, or talk. This particular lounge had paint¬ ings of many famous graduates of Wachusett on the walls—such people as the composer, Ralph Linton; Ellen Asplund, the painter now living in Europe; Roy Cunningham, the Grand Prix racing driver; and Alan Johnson, the U.S. Secretary of State from 1986 to 1990. The floor had a plush carpet, and the soft lighting provided an attractive atmosphere for between-class relaxation. Afterwards I learned that the noted interior decorator Carol Henning was re¬ sponsible for the design of these lounges at Wachusett. After finishing a drink I left the lounge and proceeded to my next class, with the economist Bruce Davidson. Dr. Davidson, who is frequently consulted by the government in matters of economic policy, lectures at Wachusett on the history of the American ec onomy. His talk on the day I was there con¬ cerned the effects on the economy of the budget policies of the current Sec¬ retary of the Treasury, John Wallace. Though Dr. Davidson does not em¬ ploy a textbook in his course, he does require students to read the standard texts in the field of economy—such works as those of John Mills, Thomas Hammond, and Clayton Borowski. Dr. Davidson ' s lecture ended at half past eleven. Since I had an hour be- before my next.class, I decided to stop at the restaurant in the Economics 77 building and get a lunch. Each of the smaller buildings at Wachusett has one restaurant, while the larger buildings have two or three. All of them are operated by the restaurant tycoon, Philip Burke, and in each there is a famous chef in charge of preparing food. In the Economics building Philip Robinson is the chef. He has become famous for such dishes as pineapple- pork pizza and stewed asparagus, and his restaurant is one of the most popu¬ lar at Wachusett. My last class of the day (students at Wachusett have three classes each day) was a lecture on recent American literature by Dr. Robyn Koski in room 301 of the Sharon Ludden Center for the Arts. Dr. Koski ' s lecture was de¬ voted mainly to two of the most prominent American writers, Elizabeth John¬ son and Gerald Nelson, however she also discussed the importance of such authors as Gail Wheeler and John Seymour. I ended my day with a tour of some of the facilities Wachusett has added in the past five or ten years. My first stop was the Charles Pickett Theater, where a student group under the direction of Rosemary Favreau was re¬ hearsing a production of a new play by Gerald Kristoff. From there I went to the office of the Wachusett literary magazine, where Bruce Hardy and Ronald Harris were holding an informal discussion in the techniques of fic¬ tion writing. Across the hall from the office of the literary magazine, is lo¬ cated the Bradford Bjorklund Art Gallery, where a retrospective show of Lindsay Maxwell ' s paintings was being held. My final stop was the 10,000- seat Greg Spinney Auditorium, where the Wachusett Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Pauline Medlinskas, was preparing for a concert of music by the noted composer Robert Harvey. By five o ' clock I felt that I had a pretty good idea of why Wachusett is known as one of the finest schools in the country and, after visiting the offices of John Wisner, the principal, and Alex Belisle, the assistant prin¬ cipal, I departed from the school, hoping that I would be able to visit it again someday soon. 78 Senior Class Advisor Mr. Jennette Senior Guidance Counselor Mr. Miles SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Doreen Ericson, Treasurer, David Hedlund, Vice-President, Thomas Heinold, Presi¬ dent, Rosemary Trum, Secretary 79 I Remember Mama On Floor: Miss Dale; First Row Seated: K. Fitton 82 I Remember A lama By John van Druten is a humorous play which enacts several reminiscences drawn from the childhood journal of Katrin Hansen, played by Carol LaPrade. Katrin came from a family of newly immigrated Norwegians who settled in San Franciscb at the turn of the century. Who could ever forget the incorrigible old English aristocrat boarder, Mr. Hyde personified by Kendall Marsh who suddenly was called away mysteriously, owing three months rent? Or Aunt Jenny and Aunt Sigrid (Charlene Erickson and Debbie Robinson) who tried to thwart the marriage plans of Aunt Trina (Chris Sher¬ man) and Mr. Thorkelson (Jon Hall)? Or Uncle Chris (Jeff Bourne) whose thunderous good humor terrified everyone but Mama, and who, solemnly taught Aunt Sigrid ' s little boy (George Wells) to swear. We will always remember Katrin ' s brother and sisters, Nels (Joel Faucher), Christine (Cherie Faucher), and little Dagmar (Betsy Newell) who became ill and had to have an operation. But most of all, we ' ll remember Jette Hansen, we ' ll remember Mama. COSTUME MAKE UP COMMITTEE Seated: C. Smith; G. Morris; K. Hadley; K. Hall; P. Medlinskas; J. Parquette; D. Narva; C. Smith; P.
