PRINCIPAL TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1965 Having practically completed a successful four-year career at Wachusett, you are now about to em bark on a new phase of your life. As was true, also, here in high school, thi.s new phase will be only as successful as you choose to make it. If you worked to full capacity through high school, you should be well prepared for the future. Continue to work high, and to keep your standards high. Success will surely result. ' flierever you go; whatever you do; may good fortune always be with you. My very best wishes to you all, ' ViL dL r- Neal T, Skillings Principal WACHUSETT REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL HOLDEN. MASSACHUSETTS To the Kembers of the Class of 1965? Tr.is time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it. The above quotation is more applicable today, in your generation, than it was in Emerson ' s, back in 1837, when it was written. The good in your peneration lies in your opportunity to better yourself through education. Your high school education is that stepping stone to a more enriched and productive life. Leaders are badly needed in our trying times. We look forward to you for that leadership. Sincerely, AAR. AAARTIN F. WHITE Assistant Principal MRS. ELIZABETH CHANDLER MRS. PEARL SMITH MRS. SHIRLEY BJORNLUND THANK YOU JEANNE During our final year at Wachusett we were hosts to Miss Jeanne de Villiers- of Capetown, South Africa, and Mr, Gurcharan Singh Bhalla of New Delhi, India. The pleasure that we received from knowing and talking with them was matched only by their eagerness to learn about our way of life. We To the Class of ' 65, I am very grateful for this opportunity to express my gratitude for the many wonderful experiences that this year as an American Field Service Student at your school has afforded me. The American Field Service is an international organ¬ ization; students come to the ' Jnited States from over sixty foreign countries. They come, hoping to bring a closer understanding of their own country - its customs, its people, its ideals, and its beliefs. They hope, too, to gain an understanding of the united States, and to relay this understanding to their family and friends at home. Having the privilege of living in your country has also provided me with a chance to become a better and more knowledgeable citizen of South Africa. This may sound paradoxical, but this year has necessitated a closer study of my country, and thus enabled me to appreciate so many tbincs which 1 had previously taken for granted. My year at Wachusett has been a very happy and rewarding one. It has been a school life very different to that which I led at home, and sometimes I found these differences hard to understand. But it will be more than knowledge acquired from books that I shall be taking home with me. I shall carry home with me many happy memories, lasting friendships, as well as a truer impression of American people. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my American family, the staff and students at Wachusett, and all my friends in Holden for making this year possible. Very sincerely, C P. 0. Box 37 ( Durbanville Cape Province Republic of South Africa AND MR. BHALLA thank them for their sincere interest, their friendliness, their willingness to serve, and for the experiences which they shared with us, and we wish them happiness and success in the future. Thank you for a wonderful year, Jeanne and Mr. Bhalla, Gurcharan Singh Bhallaj S 136 Greater Kailash 1 New Pelhi - lii India This gives me immense pleasure to thank you all for the most pleasant, educative, and instructive period of my life, which will come to a close at Wachusett Regional High School on 25th June, 1965. I came here as an exchange teacher, to teach and to learn. I can assure you that my experiences here have been most gratifying. I will not deny that I came across many strange situations, but I always had an open and appreciative mind, My teaching assignments, though challenging for change of background and different shades of language, have been really rewarding. My contacts with the community at Holden and around were most satisfactory and I am carrying back with me a great wealth of good words and sincere friendship. It is true that I may not be able to set my eyes again on various places and people I visited, yet I shall always cherish their associations and memories. Ethelyn Wetherald 69 IMPRESSIONS OF WACHUSETT Our four years at Wachusett have provided us not only with an education, but also with a wide variety of experiences, many happy memories, and some rather irreverent escapades. Griff Dorkins leaves his hair to Carol Williams, who can ' t quite seem to style hers. Charlie Morris leaves his science project to John Mills of the science seminar. Charlie is cross-breeding hens so that they lay odds. David Taber leaves his height to George Fitch so that he can grow up. Joanne Fowler, whose empty purse is always the same because there ' s never any change in it, leaves her hard times to the English department. Someone leaves twenty feet of rubber on the bus-loading platform to a puzzled administration. The Class of 1965 leaves with many happy memories. THE PROPHECY Everyone please fasten your seatbelts. Departure time is set for 8:00, and we will be taking off in just a few minutes on a round the world tour to see what the members of the Class of 1965 are doing now that they have had a chance to enrich the world with their intelligence and cre¬ ativity. One of the pilots on this flight is Thomas Smith. The other is Jean Gresham, so let me repeat: Be sure to fasten your seatbelts securely! Stewardesses are Joyce Bruinsma, Claudia Clark, Linda Kennedy, and Sandra MacGregor. Donald Clark is in the back of the plane taking care of the parachutes, so you have nothing to worry about. Just sit back and relax. As we take off from that great metropolis. New York City, look below at the vast panorama. Over there is the Empire State Building, and that little figure scaling its side is Brian Fowler, world-renowned geologist and amateur mountain climber, searching for new specimens. Off to the side is the Statue of Liberty, with Bill Fisher dashing anxiously around it, trying to save our country from the onslaughts of socialism. If you ' ll look over to the right where Wail Street, the business center of our nation is located, you ' ll see some eminently successful Wachusett alumni. That skyscraper houses the main offices of Lumpy ' s Pancake Houses, quite a flourishing chain owned by Robert Hallen. Around the block is where Janet Beebe has her offices. She ' s the pro¬ ducer of several soap-operas, and she has Magda Johnson and Jane Rennicks working as secre¬ taries for her. Janet al Vays did have a flair for the dramatic. Of course, our class hasn ' t neglected the arts: Jane Sherwin ' s starring on Broadway tonight, and over at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they ' re having an exhibition of work by Martha Handy, Pam Smith, Linda Lehto, and Diane Laukkanen. Now we re approaching Atlantic City where Ann Prouty is being crowned Miss America. Of course, Atlantic City is also famous for its beaches. Kay Robertson is the lifeguard at that large one down to your left, and that little figure about a half-mile offshore is Jody Shields, deliber¬ ately drowning. Within a few minutes we ' ll be flying over Washington, D.C. If you look closely, you ' ll be able to see the Supreme Court Building where John Keith is Chief Justice-the first time he ' s ever been on the bench. One of his secretaries is another member of the Class of 1965, Linda Johnson. Tom Dresser, head of one of the most influential newspaper chains in the country has his office in Washington too, and he ' s lucky enough to have Brad Rockwell, the famous political cartoonist, on his staff. Next on our flight plan is Florida, where we ' ll be able to see a few more of our friends. As we fly over Daytona Beach, try to get a close look at the raceway where Alan Darrah and Ken Segur are two of the top drivers. Looks like those lessons learned on Route 68 really paid off. Down in Palm Beach maybe you ' ll be able to get a glimpse of Linda Fairchild before we head for Mexico. Now we ' re flying over Acapulco, world famous resort area. It ' s quite a plush place, as you can see, and-look! Isn ' t that Jim Barys, Brad Brodeur, and Pete DuBrule on that beach down there? I wouldn ' t be surprised-they always did know how to enjoy life. In a few minutes, we ' ll be flying over South America, and maybe we ' ll get to see Lillian Wisner and Jody Williams working with the Peace Corps. And, of course, no trip would be complete without a visit to Brazil where all the, nuts in the senior play come from. We ' re now crossing the Atlantic Ocean, with our next destination—Africa. Do you see that row¬ boat down there? That ' s Jacjcie McGann in it, with his fish net and coffee can: even the greatest oceanographers have to start somewhere. Wait! It looks like someone is in the water, swim¬ ming alongside. Who could it be? He looks familiar, but I can ' t see him clearly enough. Per¬ haps he ' ll catch‘up to us by the time we arrive in Africa. As you can see, we ' re now flying over the Republic of South Africa, and it ' s every bit as beauti¬ ful as Jeanne described it. When we go over Capetown, we ' ll probably be able to see her and send her our greetings. 73 Now we ' re entering the heart of Africa. Below us, if you can see them through the jungle foliage, you ' ll find Ron Friberg, Carl AAager, and John Schnier on safari. That little figure trailing behind them is Stephen Miller. It isn ' t often that you find a taxidermist that desperate for business. As we fly over the Congo, you can see Betty Lundquist riding her Honda through the jungle, ministering to the natives. Somebody should remind her of that song about a lobster dying in a boiling pot. Next stop on our African tour will be Egypt, where Steve Drawbridge, world-famous archaeologist, is working on the Sphinx. Wonder how he manages his skating these days? As you can see, we ' re now approaching Europe. The first country we visit will be Spain, and Td like to point out the famous bullfighting center of Barcelona. In fact, Alan Lambert is in the ring right now, throwing the bull as usual. Now we ' ll detour over to Greece where the Olympics are in progress. Russ Pettis, Dave White, Elmer Ream and Earle Rugg have copped quite a few track medals for us, and Betty Sargent and Pat Shea are doing pretty well in the swimming events. Our basketball and field hockey teams are doing well too, thanks to several members of our class. Now we ' re headed to Austria, and within a short while we ' ll be flying over Vienna, where some of the foremost psychiatrists in the world have their offices. In fact, Kent Bath and Brian Clark are practicing there now. When they run out of patients, they can always analyze each other, which should be quite a challenge. As we fly over Switzerland, see if you can spot Skip Brandes ' chalet. Once you find it, you ' ll be sure to find other Class of ' 65 members skiing there. Yes, there ' s Skip, and on the way down the slope are Brad Davis, Nancy Enman, Al Genest, Bob Packard, and Kathy O ' Brien. There ' s one other person there, but I can ' t quite tell who it is—only the skiis are sticking out of the snowbank. Next stop will be Paris, fashion capital of the world. You ' ll see Caroline Albert designing for a famous fashion house, which counts among its models Nancy Riley, Ann Rubenstein, and Susan Yarrington. With models like those, don ' t you envy photographers Eddie Blake and Lance Roettger? Paris is also the home of famous hairdressers such as Monica Johnson, Juanita Fanning, Linda Wit- kowski, and Sue Gagnon. Next we ' ll fly to Finland where Joelle Maki is in good company using her favorite phrase, dumb Swede. From here we ' ll head for Russia. Down to your left is Moscow, home of communists, borscht and vodka. Straight ahead is the American Embassy where our Ambassador Noel Rettig is handling diplomatic relations for us. Looks like we ' ve finally found someone who understands the Russian mind. Over there is the Bolshoi Ballet, and our own Audrey Pearson is dancing there tonight. There are some boys staggering out of that local vodka saloon, but I don ' t recognize them. Wait—one is waving, but—no, I can ' t tell who he is. That ' s too bad. From Moscow we ' ll be heading for the Mid-East, and a visit with some more members of the class of ' 65. We ' re now flying over Saudi Arabia, site of some of the richest oil deposits in the world. Below us is the headquarters of Humble Oil, which has David Doucette as its head. I won ' t comment on that! Earl Thunstrom is in charge of field operations, and those boys manning the pumps are Al Perry, Jack LaPrade, Charlie Harvey, Nat Lindquist, and Larry LaChance. Not far from here is where Fred Perrone has his harem. Three of the charter members are Sandy Folschild, Carolyn Abdella, and Peggy Hughes. Lucky Perrone! Now we ' re headed to Siberia, via Asia. No, don ' t panic—we ' re not going to stay, we ' re just going to see a few more friends. We ' re flying over India and—look! Here comes Mr. Bhalla on his flying carpet. Everybody wave! He makes it look so easy. Wait! Here comes someone else on a flying carpet, but he ' s driving so fast I can ' t recognize him. I wonder who it could be? At last we ' re flying over the white snows of Siberia. In that group of people down there I can see Judy Willett, Bruce Hale, Shirley Merchant, and Robert Guillote, and they don ' t seem to be minding the cold at all. Guess those winters in Rutland were good preparation. Over to your right you can see those invincible fur trappers Lennie Tornblom and Daniel Williams, and not far be¬ hind them is Jeff Noyes, looking for stamps. Let ' s hope he doesn ' t get lost! Of course, no visit to Russia would be complete without a trip to the salt mines, where we ' ll be able to see Tom Murphy. That ' s what he gets for asking so many questions. As we leave the snowy cold of Siberia, we ' ll be heading for the South Pacific. Do you see those tropical islands ahead of us? That ' s where Norm Pope, Richard Kemp, and John Wernholm spend their days taking it easy. And those two figures in that dugout offshore are those intrepid fishermen Paul Majewski and Steve Pelletier. Now that we ' re getting nearer to the U.S.A. we can see a few more signs of civilization. Below us is the USS Dreamboat which counts among its crew members Greg Wohlander, Pete Perkins, Larry Nelson, George Drawbridge, and Richard Granger. In a few.minutes, we ' ll be flying over Hawaii, and we can wave to Sharon Mezger on her surfboard as we go by. Well, now we ' re approaching the West Coast of the United States. The first city we fly over will be Los Angeles, and we ' ll be able to see Jacqui Pratt there. It looks like she finally found the perfect atmosphere for her smog experiments. Then we ' ll be heading for Las Vegas where we can see Charlie Morris and Lee Meilor working at breaking the bank. They haven ' t succeeded yet, but- th ey ' ve been so diligent, I ' m sure they ' ll make it sooner or later. Now we ' re headed for the world-famous Mayo Clinic, where we ' ll be able to see quite a few of our classmates. Among the doctors there are Bernie Westerling and Wayne Greenslit, and nurses include Janet Amons, Nancy Burtt, Sue Daniels and Janice Dwelley. The technical staff has Linda Oliver, Wendy Morrison, and Linda Sottak on it, and medical secretaries include Nancy Kennedy, Sue McGovern, and Pat Morrison. Those Wachusett biology classes must have really paid off. We ' re now flying over Columbus, Ohio. If you look closely, maybe you ' ll be able to see Bruce Ebbeson, a successful snuff salesman. He always was pretty good at sticking his business in other people ' s noses. Our next destination is Pittsburgh, where we ' ll be able to see Robert Dillow and Brian Hirst who are partners in an undertaking firm. Their motto? See Hirst first for the worst hearse. Also working in Pittsburgh is John Adams, who is now a statistician. His latest famous statement is A room full of married people is totally empty because there isn ' t a single person in it. Marvelous what modern math can do for you, isn ' t it? Finally, we ' ll take a slight detour over Wachusett, where Laurie Duvarney, Pam Johnson, Barbara Sheckleton, Carolyn Hedquist, and Deborah Lantiegne are on the faculty. Jim Pratt and Bob Le- ander are the heads of the cafeteria staff, so maybe that explains why the cafeteria ' s empty. Karen Holland and Janet Martin are school nurses, and Kathy Jones is the school doctor, so it ' s a lot easier for students to skip classes these days. My, my, this younger generation has it so easy. Please fasten your seatbelts. We are now approaching Kennedy International so please prepare for a landing. Wait! What ' s that??!!! oh no, the front of the plane is on fire, and we ' re heading for Long Island Sound! Prepare for a crash everyone!
