Class Mis lory I think it ' s time to look through my bookcase again. If has been a long time since I browsed through the pages of my old books. Let ' s see now, Dickens, Longfellow . . . what is this hidden behind my volumes of Shakespeare? Why It ' s the history of the Class of 1956, Wachusett Regional High School. What fun If will be to look back on my high-school years! N September 8, 1954, our new adventure began. We entered the new high school, which we all had watched grow from a skeleton of bare steel and concrete to a beautiful, modern school building. All one hundred and sixty-three of us were completely lost for the first few weeks, running from one end of the build- ing to the other in order to find our classes on time. We discovered that everyone was having the same problem, so we had some consolation. It wasn ' t long be- fore classes began to run smoothly as we became accustomed to the routine. Before long, football was in full swing. Now we had a chance to develop our school spirit by cheering for our team. Tryouts for cheerleaders were held, and in the final selection one of our junior girls, Lois Sargent, was chosen a mem- ber of the cheerleading squad, with Barbara Anderson and June McGuiggan as alternates. They helped the team to a successful season. Some of the junior boys who made the team were Charles Darling, Joel Decker, Meivyn Gray, Harold Lane, Robert Miles, and Harry Taylor. While the football team was achieving success, the hockey team was also making a good record. This was due partly to the fact that our own Connie Baker, Sally Fletcher, Joan Forsell, Beverly Johnson, Shirley Johnson, and Eleanor Reed served on the varsity. As soon as we had become acquainted with most of our classmates, elections for class officers were held. The procedure included the filing of nomination papers, campaigning, the holding of primaries, and the final voting. We elected as president, Robert Miles; vice-president, Harry Taylor; secretary, Beverly Johnson; and treasurer, Ronald Fournier. Our ad- visors were Mrs. Olson, Mr. Eaton, and Mr. Menard. Next our thoughts turned to basket- ball. Joel Decker, Stephen Howe, and James Wright were our stars on the varsity team. Sally Fletcher, Joan Forsell, Beverly Johnson, and Shirley Johnson were our

contributions to the girls ' team, which had an excellent season. The junior girls further demonstrated their skill in athletics when the badminton championship of the school was won by Sally Fletcher and Marie Speckman. By this time we began to feel more at ease with the other members of the school. Dances were held after some of the basketball games, and a few record hops were sponsored by different classes. On the evening of March 18, we spon- sored a junior movie with the proceeds going to the class treasury. Finally spring arrived, and we began anticipating our biggest social event of the year — our Junior Prom. We all worked hard decorating the gym in a carnival theme. Music was furnished by Johnny Cutler ' s orchestra, and everyone had a gala time dancing the night away. Class Day was a very proud occasion for the junior class for it was announced that our own Meivyn Gray was the re- cipient of the Harvard Award. Two boys from our class, Robert Miles and David Cook, attended Boys ' State and one girl. Myrtle Tremblay, attended Girls ' State. With final examinations the first school year of the Wachusett Regional High School came to an end. On September 7, 1955, one hundred and fifty-five seniors entered the familiar halls again. As seniors we were deter- mined to make this the best year ever. During the latter part of our junior year we had chosen as president, Meivyn Gray; vice-president, Robert Miles; secre- tary, Carol Ann Cooke; and treasurer, Ronald Fournier. This year our advisors were Mrs. Creamer, Mrs. Jean Williams, and Mr. Frechette. The football team was comprised mostly of seniors, as was the hockey team. Both had successful seasons. A Student Council was organized with Harold Lane, president and Charles Darl- ing, vice-president. Although this organi- zation is new in our school, it has already done many things which benefit the stu- dent body. When we returned to school after Christ- mas vacation and found ourselves writing 1956 on our papers, we began to realize how few were the months of school left to us before graduation. Our Variety Show was held on March 16. Many members of the class par- ticipated, helping to make it a success. The proceeds were for the benefit of the senior class. The Senior Play, Life With Father, was presented on April 17 and 18. Those participating were John Price, as Father; Lois Sergent, as Vinnie; and Lawrence Cushman, Harold Lane, Dennis Moore, and Earle Boynton, as their sons. Althea Barton played Mary Skinner, and Leatrice Stoddard was Cora. The Reverend Doctor Lloyd, Doctor Somers, and Doctor Hum- phreys were played respectively by Ronald Fournier, Walter Gove, and Jeffrey Cun- ningham. Eleanor Reed was seen as Margaret, and Cynthia Sperl, Mildred Bond, Marie Speckman, and Judith Jud- kins played the parts of the maids. At last we reached the final stepping stone of our high school career. June ar- rived and with it, graduation! As we left the halls of Wachusett, we carried with us many pleasant memories of the happy times spent by the Class of 1956 at Wachusett Regional High School. What a pleasure it has been to recall my high school days. I must leave this book near the front of my bookcase so that I ' ll be reminded to read it more often. C. MARCIA SMITH
