HUG SOIE BUNN 5 SPIRIT WEEK Everyone likes to pretend at one time or an- other that they are someone else. Have you ever had the urge to dress as your parents did in high school or pretend you are the little old lady from down the block? We all got that chance during the Homecoming Spirit Week from Oct. 5-9. We started the week by bopping our way through 50's - 60's day in poodle skirts letter sweaters. Tuesday we paired up for twin day. We hobbled through the halls on Wednesday in flowered skirts, holey nylons, and baggy bib-oyeralls as we gave tribute to ourselves as Senior Citizens. We couldn't forget the Nerds, though. On Thursday, plaids and wide ties were In , and the nerd laugh echoed up down the halls. Spirit Week concluded after the traditional Maroon Gold Day on Friday. The fun came to an end 5 days and thousands of giggles after it started. 1. Cute clothes! 2. We have the same interest. 3. The drum roll echoed through the gym as the homecoming king and queen waited in hopeful anticipation. The time had come for Andy Woelfel and Jenny Alter - matt to be crowned the 1987-1988 Ho- mecomin King and Queen. They took their reigning walk as the Concert Band played. Others who helped make the night memorable were Mr. Leo Gross- man, who deliverd an inspiring Home- coming Address, and the Senior Choir. The evenings emcees were Janell Ham- merschmidt and Kent Kletscher. 1. The new 1987-88 Homecoming King and Queen: Andy Woelfel and Jenny Altermatt. 2. Andrew Woelfel crowned as the reigning king of 1987-88 by Kevin Baune li THE SOUND OF MUSIC Imagine entering a world filled with nuns and nazis! This year the cast and crew of THE SOUND OF MUSIC took us there. We went with Maria Rainer to visit the nuns of the Nonnberg Abbey and journeyed to the Von Trapp Mansion where we met Max Detweiler, Baroness Schraeder, the seven Von Trapp children, and also the mighty Captain, himself. This musical adventure was filled with love songs between Maria and the Captain, beautiful hymns from the nuns choir, and everyone's favorites such as Do - Re - Mi and My Favorite Things by the Von Trapp Children. We were enchanted by the elegant wedding of the Captain and Maria and we were all delighted by Uncle Max's frivolous antics. The cast put in many long, hard hours of practice under their dedicated director, Mary Kay Schweim and spent just as many hours going over over every song with the choral director, Carol Hamilton. Thanks to the hard-working cast, crew, and directors we will always remember the fun we had when we entered the world of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. 1. The singing Nuns 2. A-tten-tion! 3. In addition to it's district and region trophies the theater troupe garnered acting awards at both levels. Shelly Salfer won BEST ACTRESS at both district and region level for her portrayal of the character Meg. HONESTLY This year's prom was filled with over 39 couples and about a dozen singles. We danced the night away with The Action under the black, white, silver, and teal covered tent. The theme, Honestly was a big hit. For the second time, the adults put on the after prom party where they had a casino, caricature artists, and much, much more! 1. Waiters and Waitresses: S. Grossman. M. Pistulka. M. Pohlen. C. Besides their everyday tasks of education, they also participate in the Special Olympics. This year, as part of Special Olympics, they went skiing at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. Minnesota. Our hats off to a super bunch of kids! 44 46 BOARD AND ADMINISTRATION i Among the many people who help keep us kids in line are the Board and Administration. Without their help and support, our school would not be able to function properly. The Administration spends many hours with the board solving the problems of everyday school life. As part of their work, they coordi- nate the educational process between the students, parents, and faculty. Keep up the good work! 48 FACULTY The students ot W.H.S. are fortunate to have teachers who are concerned about our well being. Each day they work hard to give us an education that will prepare us for the outside world. Even though it isn't al- ways shown, the student body appreciates everything that they do for us. 1) Miss Miller - Band 2) Mrs Salmela - Social Studies and Jr. High Physical Educa- tion 3) Miss Oftedahl - Athletic Director and Physical Education 4) Mrs. Schweim - English 5) Mrs. Corrow - Choir 6) Mr. Wahl - Business Education 7) Mr. Johnson - Social Studies 8) Mrs. Katzke - Student Teacher Aide Director 9) Mr Sagedahl - Special Education 49 1) Mr. Brown - Industrial Arts and Psychology 2) Mr. Nelson - Science and Math 3) Mr. Kallevig - Science and Math 4) Miss Hamilton - French and Librarian 5) Mr Severson - Guidance Counselor and Social Studies 6) Mr. Crommert - Agriculture 7) Mrs. Keil - Business and English 8) Mr. Doering - Math and Science 9) Miss Hed - Special Education 10) Mrs. Jensen - Art 51 ETC. To actually get up in front of people and speak for 6-7 minutes is scary! It takes alot of talent, courage, and heart. This year's declam team prospered highly with the addition of 5 new members. Two participants; Rosanne Turbes and Deb Palmer even performed at the Fine Arts Night on May 22nd. Congratulations to Mrs. Schweim and all the participants for a job beautifully done. 1. A 48-22 win against Red- wood Falls Morton started the season with a bang. After that win, 2 was hard to find. After losing their next 13 games, the girls found win 2- 4, by winning 3 of their last 5 games. In tournament play, their hard work and hustle paid off when they upset 2-seeded Springfield in an exciting over-time game in the District Quarterfinals, but then lost 61-67 to Cod- er Mountain in the Semi- finals. Although the 4 and 15 record doesn't show it, the girls played hard and improved a lot dur- ing the season. The girls were coached by Lawrence Kallevig and assisted by Bob Sagedahl and Dan Snaza. With only two seniors leaving the line-up, the 88-89 team will have a lot of depth and exper- ience. 1. A Squad- Row 1: Manager M. Kallevig. T. Lemcke, H. Hindt. P. Boyum, S. Grossman, S. Riley. L.
