Coronation took place October 6th. Jill Fischer and Mike Trost were the M.C.'s for the evening, and Mr. Ledermann gave the homecoming address. The band provided the back- ground music for the coronation march, and presented a few of their own selections. The choir also sang a song dedicated to the coronation ceremony. The 1983-1984 King and Queen, Kevin Guetter and Sarah Gob- lirsch, took their last reigning walk pre- ceeding the crowning of the 1984-85 King and Queen, Joel Dudgeon and Val Wagner. 1. These could have been just a few of the comments heard floating around the halls. Spirit Week, which was Oc- tober 5 to October 12, started out with a bang. Monday exploded with newcomers as Imper- sonation Day brought in nerds, a street gang, Twisted Sister, and Magnum P.I. (The Enforc- er also made a special appearance). Toga day was the second event of the week. Tuesday afternoon was spent watching various stu- dents and teachers pig out at the Donut Eating Contest. Wednesday proved to be dirty, as grubby people, clothes, and shoes made their way down the halls. Thursday, Camouflage day, was experienced by many good hunters (and some not so good). Thursday's activity was a very long and tiring snake race. Friday was the traditional Maroon and Gold day. A loss in the football game on Friday brought on some sadness, but that was quickly diminish- ed by the music of Foreplay at the home- coming dance which concluded the busy, fun, and very spirited, 1984 Spirit Week. Opposite page, 1. Crazy Dean and the Gorgeous cheerleaders performed for the excited spectators at the powder puff football game. 2. They want you for the U.S. Army. Doesn't it look like fun!?!? 3. Teresa Rohlik exclaims, I'm proud to be a farm- er! 7 “COME YE FROM THE HILLS ” Visiting a mystical village in the middle of Scotland that is 200 years in the past isn't an adventure one usually makes, but this year, you were invited to do just that. With the music of love songs, fairs on Machonnachy Square, and a beautiful wedding, Brigadoon, a wonderfully preserved vil- lage, came to life. The blessed, old-fashioned town appeared only one day every one-hundred years in order to save its traditional ways. On one of those days, two hunters from New York, Tommy and Jeff, stumble upon the village and, of course. Tommy falls in love with a sweet village girl named Fiona. However, he learns he must leave her. He leaves but cannot stop thinking about her and decides he must go back. But how? In the end, he again finds the secret village and begins his new life with his new love. BRIGA- DOON was brought alive by many hardworking indivi- duals, who were directed by the dedicated and talented, Mary Kay Schweim. After 11 weeks of rehearsals, set build- ing and costume making, the cast of 29 gave their audiences a show to remember. BRIGADOON was presented to both the elementary and high school, and ended its run with two successful public performances on November 16 and 17. Opposite Page 1. Meg, a jug o' cream, please. 2. BABY I’M A STAR B-E-D. Bed? Yes, three beds were needed and then the stage was set for this year's one act. Bedroom Farce. The play was about four very different couples and their everyday prob- lems with married life. Many long hours were packed into a short time to get the production ready in time. With 80 degrees below windchill, the cast and crew moved the mas- sive set to the site of district competition in Walnut Grove, where they were awarded the runner-up trophy and Jill Fischer received the best actress award. The cast and crew was made up of 11 people who had to put up with each other, even at some very odd rehearsal times. The produc- tion was once again masterminded by Mary Kay Schweim. 1. You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown! These were familiar sayings as you watched this year's spring production You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The play took the audience through a typical day in Charlie Brown's life. After living through all the problems of the day, Charlie Brown realized it wasn't such a bad day after all. In a few long weeks the six-member cast got organized under the direction of Mary Kay Schweim, and presented the play on May 10 and 11. It was very fun to watch. 1. Charlie Brown Cast, row 1: J. One of these was the addition of Miss Julie Downhour, who replaced Mr. Ken Wistrom as director. The choir also practiced only a half-hour each day instead of an hour as before. Besides performing in the winter, the spring and in the pops concerts, many members became involved in the small group choir, the barber- shop quartet and the district solo and ensemble contest in addition to the regular rehearsals and concerts. The band performed at the district large group contest, and the winter, spring, and pops concerts. In some of the fall and winter ball games the pep band boosted spirits everywhere it played. One of the projects that kept them very busy with preparations was the main event of the year- the Special Olympics. Those winning awards were honored along with all the other athletes at this year's athletic banquet. 1. T.M.H. students, row 1: Special Education Assistant Mrs. Pischke, M. Peterson, Q. Radel, B. Although the squad varied from 17 to 14 members at times, they were able to carry on and develop their routines to the music of various hit records. Using money earned by fundraisers throughout the year, the squad spent a fun weekend in the Cities at the state danceline competition where they picked up ideas for next year's rou- tines. 1. This year the editors of the annual, Jill Fischer and Sue Kramer along with members of the staff, put in many hours of hard work to create an annual that will make the memories of your high school years last forever. Under the supervision of Mr. Lien, the staff has moved from inexperi- enced to dedicated in just one year. Also involved with the annual were several photographers headed by Jodi Rauk under supervision of Miss Carol Hamilton. 1. Annual Editor J. Fischer, Advisor, J. To do your best requires prac- tice in which you recite your piece over and over with huge amounts of expression until you drift off into sleep still reciting your piece. Well, that was the case with most of the 7 people who made up this year's declam team under the coaching of Mary Kay Schweim. All seven students placed in the sub-dis- tricts. At district, Jean Macht took alternate to the region and Jill Fischer placed first. In the regions, Jill placed as an alternate to the state. Even though the numbers were small, this year's declam had the dedica- tion to be tough competetors on all levels. 1. Declam coach, Mary Kay Schweim. 2. The declam team, row 1: R. Jenniges, P. These students were chosen or. the basis of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. The members are chosen by faculty members who make up the National Honor Society Chapter Council. They vote on the students who are scholastically eligible for membership. The members were honored at a ban- quet held May 6th at the Homestead Cafe. The speaker for the evening was Dr. Keigh Hubble, Professor of Education at Southwest State University. Five student speakers talked about the qualities needed to become an N.H.S. member. THANK- YOU We, the editors and photographers would like to thank all the advertisers and donaters for their contributions, and all you who continue to pur- chase the annual even at its rising cost. Without you there would be no annual. We would also like to thank Mr Lien and Miss Hamilton for putting up with us all year, and a big thank you to William s Studio, Mr. John Moe and the Wabasso Standard, and Jodi, Lisa, Chris. Becky, and Craig for helping with pictures. Thank-you so very much. 50 “COOL IT DOWN” Do you think it's easy keep- ing law and order on a bus with forty screaming kids on it? Just ask a bus patrol mem- ber. This year's patrol has kept the buses in order so they're still safe places to ride. Their efforts have been great- ly appreciated by those who ride the bus and the bus dri- vers themselves. 1. Bus Patrol members. Row 1: L. Schaffran, M. Deprez, C. Brand, S. Kramer. T. She spent the first half of the year at the Cyril Jenniges farm and the last part of the year at Emmett Kratzke's in Wa- basso. This is the first time Ricki has been to America and it took her quite awhile to get used to American slang. While she was here, Ricki participated in Brigadoon. and Bedroom Farce, and she was the stage manager for the spring play this year. She was also involved in declam and chorus. Thank you, Ricki, for bring a little culture to our school. “LET’S GET PHYSICAL” This year's athletes competed in many exciting games and matches. The cheerleaders also helped to support the teams all the way to the end. This year the W-Club helped to buy a new video system and new cheerleading uniforms. 1. Instead of just the elected representatives serving on Stu- dent Council, the class officers from each grade were to be included as well. The new advisor, Mr. Jones, has given the Student Council alot of new ideas for dances and spirit week, plus, the idea for a snow week in March to boost school spirit. This year, the cheerleaders were very busy making posters, finishing hoops, and most importantly, getting and keeping the fans and athletes fired up at games. As in the past, the cheerleaders held various pepfests, where the students watched commercials, enjoyed a visit from Santa, and witnessed a kissing contest with the players and their sisters. They have also held spaghetti suppers for the teams. Once again, the cheerleaders have done a SUPERGREAT job in spreading that Rabbit Spirit. 1. Football Cheerleaders: R. Brown, J. Rauk, A. The Rabbit team was made up of 54 dedicated boys led by co- captains Joel Dudgeon and Mike Honetschlager. A pleasant victory, knocking Springfield out of the playoffs, proved that the Rabbit team fights until the end and will never quit until the last game is played. This year's team was again headed by Coach Gary Hindt and assistant coaches Rich Johnson and Tom Kemp. With close matches and exciting games they left their mark and made way for next year's squad. The team had excellent student and parent support which boosted team spirits and led to many exciting and ear split- ting victories. Stay- ing with the system wasn't easy, but by the end of the season, the boys had developed into a tough team, never quitting until the sound of the buzzer. Captains for the season were Bruce Wotschke and Joel Dudgeon, and Coach Hawton was assisted by Tom Kemp. With three experienced juniors com- ing back, next year's season is something to look forward to. 1. Varsity Boys Basketball Squad: R. Berg, B. Wahl, B. Wotschke, P. Honetschlager, D. Frank, M. With only three seniors and four juniors out, the team had to work extra hard and bring up the sophomores to fill out the ranks. Co-captains Joan Zick and Val Wagner led the team to an excellent record and a fourth seat at districts. Coached by second-year Lawrence Kallevig and assisted by Bob Sage- dahl, the Rabbits won their first game in districts and lost in an exciting bout with Sleepy Eye. The three ties which went to the wire made for exciting matches. Led by tri-captains Curt Pistulka, Brian Rothmeier, and Terry Jenniges, the 41 member squad placed 2nd in the conference and won the District 10 title. Ten indivi- duals advanced to region and Terry Jenniges went on to take 2nd place at state. The B-squad ended the season with a record of 11 and 1 which shows their spirit and determination. Although the team showed excel- lent effort at the region tournament, they lost to Clara City-Raymond. However, they still remain number one in the hearts of their fans. At the district 10 meet, Mr. Johnson had alot of decisions to make, because he knew we had a pretty good chance of upsetting Redwood. Mr. Johnson said, We ll let Redwood take firsts but we ll take 2nds, 3rds, and 4ths. With the Rabbits getting only three firsts, (in the shot put, discus, and pole vault) Wabasso still edged out the Red- wood Cardinals 172 to 169. Mr. Johnson's coaching assistants were Mylo Havelan and Richard Hawton, and the captain this year was Joel Dudgeon. The WHS Girls' track team underwent a slight change in their coaching staff. This year, with Nancy (Hoffman) Kissner leaving, Mr. Johnson became the head coach for both boys and girls track. Although few in number, this year's girls' team competed well against larger teams. The team placed 4th in the district and advanced to the region. There were six members in five events: Shelly Miller in the 400 meter run, Lori Lensing in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, and Annette Frericks, Cindy Plaetz, Nanci Fischer, and Dawn Frericks in both the 400 and 800 meter relays. 1 1.
