The tension in the air was building as 1982 King Randy and Queen Therese paused with the royal crowns over each candidate. Finally, with flashes going off everywhere, the crowns were placed on the heads of Ron Salfer and Jody Guetter who reigned as king and queen over the 1983 homecoming activities. 1. MC’s for the occasion were Kathy Prokosch and Tony Steffi. 2 On Monday, everyone was running around in military (army) garb. It was the regimental “Military Day.” The halls of WHS were filled with blurs of green. Tuesday was “Impersonation Day.” There were Raggedy Ann and Andys, Our Gang, and even some back-to-the-fifties slicks! Also on Tuesday, there was an obstacle course race. Contestants had to put a spoon with a peanut on it into their mouths. With this, they ran through tires, walked like ducks, crawled like babies, stepped onto a chair, and finally passed the peanut onto the next person’s spoon. The winners were Juniors and Fresh- mans. Wednesday was the dreaded mix and match day with some out- rageous outfits floating around. Thursday was committed to “Sweatsuit Day”, for the recrea- tional people in school. Later that day, there was a jello race in which the contestants passed jello from person to person using a spoon in their mouths. The race was easily won by the Seniors. Friday, the last day of Spirit Week, was a salute to our school colors, maroon and gold. Over all. Spirit Week was a great success and a triumph of school spirit. Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Kay Schweim, the 17 per- formers filled the auditorium with laugh- ter and excitement. After many weeks of hard work by the director, cast, and crew, the WHS Fall Play was once again a success. 1. Cast of The Matchmaker”. Row 1 B. Pitzl, M Rauk (Barnaby), K. Kletscher (Joe. YFU “NITA” Dear Students and Seniors, Well, I’m approaching the end of my year here in the Wanda-Wabasso area. I’ll be celebrating my ninth month soon and when you read this I’ll have al- ready gone back to Norway. I couldn’t leave without saying thanks to every- body for making my year so pleasant. My year as a foreign exchange student has been the best year of my life and I consider myself as the luckiest and happiest YFU student that came over to the United States this year. My family deserves the most thanks of all. They have done so much to make my year successful. I have felt at home with them and I’ve been really com- fortable. Mom and Dad, Donna and Don Schumacher, have been the best parents an exchange student could dream of. Tim and Patti have been a great brother and sister. As I’m leaving I want to thank all the students and the teachers at Wabasso High, all the great friends I’ve made, and everyone in the area for being so friendly and kind. Kratzke Football EXPLOSIVE The WHS Rabbits put it all together this year and not only won the Tomahawk Conference Championship, but also ad- vanced to the state football play-offs! They were the first Wabasso team ever to accomplish this in football. After a slow 1 - 2 start, the Rabbits reeled off 6 straight wins to end the season at 7 - 2 atop the Tommy Conference standings. WHS bowed out in the state play-offs to St. Paul Academy, 23 to 18. It was an excit- ing and fun year as a record number of boys (56) reported for Varsity football. The seniors were the core of this year’s team and should be commended on a fine showing of leadership which really helped make “1982 Rabbit Football” a joyful memory for all. 1. Varsity Football. Fantastic crowd support helped the team pull off a most exciting 2-1 win over Marshall in the WHS gym. From there on the team was practically unbeatable until the State tourna- ment. The team ended the regular season with an overall record of 16-1, Champions of the Toma- hawk Conference. After defeating Redwood Falls for the District crown, the Rabbits defeated Milroy to enter the Region finals against Renville-Sacred Heart. The girls trailed 7-2 when they rattled off 16 straight points and put themselves in the State Tournament. In the opening round, the team lost a heart-breaking match to Heron Lake-Okabena, then they bounced back to defeat Fosston before bowing out to Spring Valley. This year’s team under Coach Val Oftedahl played with a lot of heart and ended the year with a 22-3 record. 1. Varsity Volleyball. L to R Row 1: S. Irlbeck, S. Goblirsch, M Wagner, Row 2: D. Schoo. Boy’s Basketball WINNING SEASON The 1982-83 boy’s basketball season saw a return to the winning ways of past days. The Rabbits recorded 10 victories while losing nine-a consider- able improvement over the past sea- son. Four seniors and seven juniors made up the roster. Ron Miller and Stan Rohlik were the captains. Miller was the only Rabbit this season to en- ter the record books as he broke the school mark for most assists in one game with 11. Rohlik finished the season as the team’s best rebounder, averaging over seven per game while chipping in 7.5 points per game. Rohlik’s post season honors included honorable mention all-conference and most valuable play- er. Dan Fischer was the Rabbit’s lead- ing scorer with 220 points. Ron Salfer finished second with 182 while Paul Kratzke had 141. Rohlik’s 131 rebounds were followed by Fischer’s 124 and Hoffman’s 91. The Rabbits finished in fifth place in the Tomahawk conference with a 6-6 record. Considering that only five of the Tomahawk’s 19 All-Conference selections return next year the pros- pects look good for another winning season in 1983-84. 58 1. Varsity Boy’s Basketball. They defeated three teams, Lamber- ton, Redwood Falls, and Sanborn, to become District 10 champions. Yet more visions of glory ended when the girls lost a well fought game to Milroy in the first round of Region 3A compe- tition. The team ended the year with a great record of 11 wins and only 5 losses overall. They were lead by sen- ior co-captains Bobbi Riley and Jody Guetter. Nancy Hoffman did a super job in her first year as head basketball coach. 1 2 3 1. Varsity Girl’s Basketball. Row 1: S. Goblirsch, L. Salmela, Ja. Dallmann, Je. Dallmann, Jo. Dallmann, B. Riley. The game looked to be in San- born’s favor until the final quarter. The Rabbit’s connected on more free- throws to win the District 10 Cham- pionship! The Rabbits proved their skill and diligence by sticking with Milroy and penetrating “the” defense of the Spartans. But their effort was just not enough as they lost to Milroy by a heart-sink- ing five points in the first round of Region action. 1 2 3 4 1. The grapplin’ Rabbits had a very successful year as they won the New Ulm Invitational Tomahawk Dual Meet and the Conferenct tournament. In addi- tion to that they won the District 10 crown! This was their first District 10 championship since 1979. Individaul highlights showed Sophomore Mike Trost and Senior Ken Goblirsch make it to the state tournament. Neither placed but Ken got 111 wins to end his career at Wa- basso High School. The W.H.S. “B” team went undefeated for the 3rd straight year and Coaches Hindt, Math- iowetz, and Altermatt are looking for- ward to more successful years ahead. Community and school support and en- thusiasm remain high as the W.H.S. wres- tling program is once again one of the best in the area. 1. Varsity Wrestling. I. to r. Row 1: Manager J. Davis. K. They brought home 3rd at Conference, 3rd at Districts, and 1st at Region. The prospects look good for next year with many returning athletes again. Their diligence paid off as they came away placing high in most of their meets. They won the Confer- ence Track title, placed 2nd at Districts, and 5th at Region overall. The team’s strongest point is each member contri- butes points for a large point total. Their weak area is the fact that they don’t have enough people to fill each event. The team was led by co-captains Ron Miller and Ron Salfer. The team has good future next year with a major- ity of them returning. Good Luck!!! I. Row 1: B. Heiling, K. Irlbeck, C. Van Hecke, P. In addition the band performed a large variety of music in the four concerts during the year. The pep band performed at many sports competitions including state football play-offs, state volleyball, boys’ dis- trict basketball, girls’ region basketball. This year they proved that determination and practice make perfect. They added many new trophies to the display case and participated in District, Region, and State tourna- ments. They also held a Banquet featuring former Wabasso athlete Sid Schultz as speaker, and presented numerous awards to members. Congratulation on a great year! 79 Deciam SPEAK OUT The Declam team was made up of thirteen poeple. These thirteen people spent much of their after school time practicing lines, timing their pieces, and making sure that everything was perfect. It must have been perfect because these thirteen all placed in Sub-District competition. They advanced to Dis- tricts with six people pulling it off to advance to Region Competition. Region was held on April 14, at Redwood Falls. Wabasso had a fine showing with two people going to state and two alternates. The de- clam team was led by an excellent coach: Mary Kay Schweim. 1 2 3 1. District Deciam Participants: Row 1: K. Kern. T. Loiselle, P. Schumacher. Row 2: L. Stage, L. Salmela. W. Franta, T. They are Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. Each year a panel of faculty members meet to carefully evaluate those students who are scholastically eli- gible. A majority vote is needed to elect a candidate for membership. This year a banquet was held May 6, at 6:30 p.m. at The Honestead. It was catered by Jenny Mahal and featured guest speaker Dr. John Van Wie from the Southwest State University Math and Computer Science Department.
