Tension built while the 1981 King Bob and Queen Barb, hesitated with the royal crowns over each candidate. With the crash of a cymbol, excitement climaxed while the crowns were put to rest on King Randy Salfer, and Queen Therese Rohlik. Entertainment by the Wabasso High School band and choir rounded out a very exciting and hap- py evening. 1. Royal Court. Row 1: A. Price, M. Gustafson, S. Jenninges, B. Klante, N. Schueller, L. Guetter, V. VanHecke, L. Knott, J. Remiger. Row 2: B. Hirsch, T. Schumacher, C. Radel, M. Beranek, Queen Therese, King Randy, D. Ingle, D. Dohmeier, R. Salfer, B. Rohlik, J. Domine. 2. M.C.’s P. Dudgeon and A. Kreft. 3. The crowning moment has finally arrived, and the happiness is shared by all. 4. The big moment is finally here! On Monday, the first day of Spirit Week, everyone was running around in P.J.’s and robes. That’s right. It was our one and only “Robe and Slipper Day”. Some people even decided to do more and bring along their stuffed animals! Tuesday was hat and shade day, with everyone wearing their cool shades and groovy hats. Also on Tuesday there was an obstacle course. Contestants had to put on a coat, cap, scarf and mittins, jump rope, twirl a hula-hoop, shoot a basket, turn cartwheels and crab- walk. The seniors were the winners of a close race. Wednesday was devoted to the wild imaginations in our school through Impersonation Day. There were Ro- mans in togas, nurses, cowboys, Raggedy Ann and Andys or just about anything a person could dream up. Here come the clowns. Yes, Thursday was clown day for all our goofy people in school. Later that day there was a lifesaver race in which the contestants passed a life- saver from person to person using a toothpick. This was won easily by the juniors. Friday, the last day of Spirit week, was a salute to our school colors, maroon and gold, with everyone also wearing boots to “stomp’em”. Over all, Spirit Week was a great success and a lot of fun too. What looked like a dull, rainy homecoming day turned into a pretty decent homecoming night. The rain stopped, the weath- er stayed warm and the Rabbits came onto the field very fire up. Our offense scored twelve points in the first half and our defense held our opponents, the Winthrop Warriors, to zero. At halftime we were entertained by the Wabasso High School Marching band, “Fantasia”, and the twirlers. In the second half the Rabbits scored one more and shut down the Warrior offense completely. The final score was Wabasso 18 and Win- throp 0. So homecoming turned out well after all. “Tiddler On Zhe Koof’ Jail Play Bravo, Bravo This year the Wabasso High School Drama Department presented the musical production Fiddler on the Roof. This play combined music, danc- ing, and fine acting to become one of the best performances ever. Director Mrs. Mary Kay Schweim guided the cast and crew through 11 weeks of practice, set work, and make-up application. Miss Michele Lien assisted Mrs. Schweim, and did choreography. All the hard work paid off in the end when the audiences responded with laughter and were touched by the moving performances of such a wonderful story. I. Cast of Fiddler on the Roof. Row 1: B. Mrs. Schweim consults one of her crew to solve those never ending problems. One-Act brilliant The one-act play After Liverpool had a very successful season. All the glamour and lights ended with a star performance at the state level on February 13, 1982. Many talented people under the direction of Mrs. Schweim practiced long hours to make the play a suc- cess. The cast and crew’s representation of Wabasso made us all very proud. We can look to the future with confidence for more star-rated one-act performances. 1. An opening moment. 2. Cast and crew. Row 1: D. Ingle, N. Schueller, L. Salmela, L. Gladitsch, C. Anderson. a very exciting year for the stu- dents in the TMH (trainable mentally handicapped) class.Miss Appel, her aide Mrs. Marquardt, and several student-teacher aides work with the students on a variety of activities throughout the year. These activi- ties help the students to improve their skills in the areas of communication, self-care, physical-motor, socialization, academic, lei- sure time, and vocational and economic use- fulness. Work activities include the impor- tant areas of telling time, number skills, us- ing money, printing skills, and reading and understanding survival sight vocabulary words. The students also participate in var- ious special activities during the year. The most exciting of these is the Special Olym- pics program. Each year they compete in events including swimmings, bowling, bas- ketball, and track and field. Competition is held on the regional and state levels. Both the work and recreational activities of these students have combined to provde a favor- able learning experience throughout the 81- 82 school year. 1. The fans were there cheering the team on in many close games, such as the Gaylord game which Wabasso lost 18 to 13. The Rabbits ended their season with a 3-6 record overall. They placed sixth in the Tomahawk Confer- ence with a 2-5 record. Wabasso Tomahawk victories were exciting with scores of 18-0 over Winthrop and 27-18 over Morgan. The team was coached by Gary Hindt and led by tri-captains Dan Dohmeier, Chad Radel, and Mike Jensen. Next year’s team will return with more experience and, of course, a better season. 1. PI 70 Qirls basketball Victory Stuffers The Wabasso girls’ basketball team fin- ished a successful season despite losing out to Springfield in the District 10 finals by four points. The team’s record was 16-5 overall and 11-2 in the Tomahawk Confer- ence. The season was an enjoyable one as the team played well and showed contin- ual improvement. With only one senior, B. Martensen, on the squad, the prospects for next year’s team look bright. Leading scor- ers for the Rabbits were Jody Guetter with 15, Bobbie Riley with 11, and Brenda Martensen with 10.2 points per game. Jody and Brenda led the team in rebound- ing with 12.1 and 9 rebounds per game. Co-captains were Brenda Martensen and Bobbi Riley and the team was coached by a new coach this year, Tom Breyfogle. I. The Rabbits de- cided that second place wasn’t good enough for them, so they traveled to Pipestone on December 5th and brought home a first place trophy. The wrestlers weren’t going to stop there. They fought hard during the season. Their reward was winning all their confer- ence meets and the conference first place tro- phy. 1. Varsity Wrestlers. Row 1: M. Trost, G. Bernardy, J. Henriksen, L. Boys’ Basket bail New Coach, New Game The boys’ basketball team ended the 1981- 82 season in District 10 play on March 8. Their record of 6-12 overall and 5-7 in the Tomahawk Conference was an improve- ment over last season. However, it can be said that while losing more games than they won, the Rabbits were tough com- petitors to the end. The Rabbits finished with the third best defense in the confer- ence, allowing only 50.3 points per game. They held the distinction of holding a conference opponent to the lowest total this season by holding Morgan to only 28. With the six returning seniors, the Rab- bits seem to have a good nucleus from which to build for next year. 1. Varsity Boys’ Basketball. Row 1: M. Eichten, S. Rohlik, D. Fischer, R. Hoffman, D. Girls’ Zrack J Shining year Although this year’s girls Track team was small in number, they proved to be large in ability by placing high at all of their meets. The young team was lead by 7 ju- niors, 5 sophomores and freshmen and a number of junior high students filling in slots where needed. Luonna Van Meveren, and Diane Lensing advanced to state com- petition. Diane failed to qualify for the finals in the 100 m. hurdles. Luonna placed 2nd in the 100 m hurdles and third in the 200 m. hurdles, this gave them an overall 8th place in state. The team was coached by Mrs. Joyce Plaetz and Nancy Hoffmann. 1. Track Team. With the age of four seniors, combined with the youth and enthusi- asm of the underclassmen, the team proved to be very com- petitive. As most area teams were well aware, the Rabbit’s greatest strength was in the field events. When the season training began, the boy’s set their goal high — they wanted to be conference champs, and on the evening of May 24,1982, they were. But for Ron Salfer the season didn’t end there. Ron advanced to state competition in the Discus event, and all though he failed to advance he represented the Rabbit’s well. The boy’s were coached by Mr. Rick Johnson and Mr. Raliegh Voas. I. Because of financial shortages in the district, baseball was cut from the 1982-83 budget. It was also the final season of coaching and teaching for Mr. Tom Breyfogle after many years in the district. Pitching was one of the strengths for the team. With three fine pitchers, Dan Dohmeier, Travis Kramer, and Ralph Price, many a batter was turned away from the plate with three strikes. At the time of this writing, they had stole, 70 of 76 bases or 92%. During the last seven games of the season, hit- ting greatly improved for the team, as they outscored their opponents 72 to 14. We’re sorry to see the baseball team cut from the WHS sports program, but in 1982 the team went down in history. 1. Baseball Team. Row 1: J. Paluck, B. Woelfel, M. Jensen, S. Baune, C. Radel, R. A new podium to be used for occasions such as coronation and commencement was purchased along with benches for the hallway. Two $250.00 scholarships were also offered to one boy and one girl from the senior class. The major project this year was the trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area taken with the biology students. In addition to performing at the annual concerts, the choir also sang at homecoming coronation. With the persistence of Mr. Wistrom the choir finally settled down and put some hard work into their music. They then came home from the large group choir contest at Sanborn with a superior rating. 1. Concert Choir. Row 1: S. Jenniges, B. Klante. L. Salmela, J. Dall- mann, W. Schmidt, J. Deprez, C. Camera Club Say Cheese! Lights ... Camera Action! The Camera Club decided to add a new twist to the 1981-1982 school year. Hours went into organizing a talent contest which was held in March. There were six acts entered. First, second and third place winners were awarded with money prizes. The Camera Club also fur- nished the Wabasso Standard, the Rabbitt Tracks, and the yearbook with pictures. 1. Camera Club Members. Row 1: P. Dudgeon, S. Jacoby, K. Eis, B. Klante. Row 2: R. Schoo, N. The 1982 declam team started out on the right foot by having all 15 members of the team place at the sub-district level. With 12 in the finals at districts, they managed to bring home the District 10 runner-up trophy. Nine very nervous and excited people advanced to region competition. On April 24, state declam was held at Richfield High School. Wabasso High was represent- ed by five speakers. And, low and behold, they brought home two medals. Tony Steffi placed sixth and Tim Schumacher placed third in humerous in- terpretation. The number of students advancing at each level represents the largest number Wabasso has had in some time. To advance, these students spent hours cutting lines, changing expressions, and timing things to the second, not to memorize endless lines. It is very obvious that their work paid off. 1. The two teams that advanced to state were the dairy products and horticulture which placed tenth and twenty-sixth, respectively. Crowned at the Eleventh Anniversary Banquet as sweetheart was Judy Price. Group activities included corn- picking for Camp Courage, fruit sales and the upkeep of the FFA park on Highway 71. 1. After enjoying a piece of pie chosen from a vast variety supplied by the old members, a solemn candlelight ceremony was held. Dr. Mary Hicker- son an associate professor of literature and Ameri- can language at SSU, spoke on “Opportunities and Realities for Women.” Her advice to all members included keeping their options open, knowing themselves, contributing to humanity, and hold- ing onto their rural heritage. % 1. The squad performed at summer parades and athletic events like football, bas- ketball, and wrestling and they were the only performers during the vol- leyball season. The squad along with the band and pom pon, helped put on a super half-time show at the Homecoming game. They raised money by sponsering a lyceum which let us all in on the wonders of magic. At the end of the year they held classes for the grade schoolers to give them a chance to experience the world of a twirler. Their advisor was Mrs. Wistrom. 1. Twirlers. Clockwise: A. Kramer, R.
