The Rabbit ' 79 Wabasso Public School Wabasso, Minnesota Editors: JOLENE HENRIKSEN CAROL PRICE Advisors: Lois Spfittgerber TABLE OF CONTENTS ACTIVITIES 3 SENIORS 13 STUDENTS 27 CLUBS 39 SPORTS 59 FACULTY 83 Homecoming Spirit Flies The nagic of homecoming floats in the luke- warm autumn breeze, homecoming buttons flash on jeans and purses, and posters with humorous graffiti scrawled on them paper the hallways. The band, twirlers, and pom-pon girls tediously work out their routines for the half-time show and the anxious mystery of who the King and Queen will be creeps closer and closer, soon to be revealed. Mark Woelfel was chosen as King and Marlene Samyn as Queen to reign over Homecoming 1973. This year there were a few changes made from the traditional homecoming. Coronation was held on the Saturday night before Spirit Week, allowing King Mark and Queen Molly to reign over it. And a junior high royalty was also added. Spirit Week included activities which in- volved faculty as well as students. Everyone used his imaginations for Grease Day, Flood- pants Day, Hat and Shade Day, and T-Shirt Day. A spaghetti contest cured some of the hunger pains. This may have supplied energy for some of the games such as volleyball, bombardment, and powderpuff footbal 1 . A humorous and enter- taining highlight was the teacher's participa- tion in the obstacle course. Of course; the most important event of the week was the football game olayed by the most important people of the week. All the hard work of the football team added up to a 1 4-6 victory against the Sleepy Eye Indians. 1. • Candidates Jeff Schueller and Gina Schuma- cher 2. Play A Success Story After one year of absence, the WHS drama de- partment resumes its place as a qreat success with this year's performance of You Can't Take It With You by Moss Hart and George Kaufmann. Drama Theater Night Writing postcards to famous people can be a full time job, but what happens when you run out of fa- mous people to write to? Why, you write to the dead ones! This is exactly what Margret and Leonard did in the one-act play Postcards . Try-outs were held right before Christmas vacation. Chris Pistulka won the part of Margret, and Larry Salmela got the part of Leonard. Hard work paid off because Postcards , under the direction of Mary Kay Schweim, received 2nd runner- up at the District 10 contest in Springfield. Both Chris and Larry were awarded best actress and actor for their performances. Special help on the play was given by Gina Ir1 - beck.whowas in charge of make-up, and Val and Theresa Pistulka, who were back stage managers. Because of the number of girls in FHA, the junior high was able to form their own chap- ter. Some of the events in which the FHA members took part included Christmas caroling, a lunchstand at the Wrestling Invitational, a hairstyling workshop put on by Darrel's from Marshall, and district and state convention. State convention was held April 26-28, where three senior high and four junior high members participated. Some of the junior high girls par- ticipated in Action Events. 1. Deciam Success To start off the declam season this year, tjie WHS students, and their coach Mrs. Mary Kay Schweim went to a Marshall invitational. The invitational is an event in which schools from all over come to give their declam selection. It proved to be good experience for the WHS declam students when sub-dis- trict came around on March 29th at Walnut Grove, as 11 of our 1A went on to district. Out of those 11, five students advanced to region held at Redwood Falls along with three alternates. As competition got harder at region, three stu- dents were still able to come out ahead and continue on to state, which took place at St. Cloud Apollo Tech. This is the first time Wabasso was able to take that many students to state level. These hard work- ing students are: Chris Pistulka, placing first at region, Vince Louwagie, also placing first at re- gion, and Larry Salmela who placed as a first alter- nate. Alas, Chris nor Vince were able to be the first to get in the state finals but, there is always next year for some lucky person... 1. Declam Team Si tt ing: P .Macht, V. But the Rabbits made a quick recovery by winning six of the next eight games. Tri-captains-Mark Woelfel, Jeff Schueller and Scott Rohlik helped very much in getting the team fired up to play their games. Coach Gary Hindt put in many long hours of practice with the team to make them a success. The football team will lose quite a few seniors but will also have a strong team next year.
