SWITCH FINLAND This year has been a pleasant one for me. I have got a lot of new friends and had many new experi- ences. I have to 8ay that I don't regret my coming here. And I wish that you here at WHS could have as opportun- ity to come to Europe for one year as an exchange student. I think that I changed many opinions about the Unit- ed States and her people and those opinions were due to American crime movies, etc. I guess now my thoughts are more positive about your country. I haven t any plans to come back to the States to live here but I think I'd like to study somewhere here. Next time, when I come to the U.S.A., I sure will visit Wabasso. So special thanks to the teachers who have been able to tolerate me and to all my friends here for making this year a special one. See you, MEXICO Among our foreign exchange students this year was Mario Garcia from Mexico. During his U-nionth stay he lived with the Russel Holznagel family. Sharing the role with his twin brother, he watohes over four younger brothers and sisters in Mexico. Mario s main reason for visiting the United States was to learn the English language better. Learning English was the hardest part of adjusting to life in the United States for him. His future plans after he returns home include at- tending a state university and studying to become a doctor. NORWAY Being a foreign student is a unique ex- perience that no. one will be able to under- stand without having tried. You re life is turned upside down; you have no really firm point to ding to; you have nobody to go to for help the first time; you re alone. Naturally, you get to know yourself very well and develop a personality that didn't exist before. Anybody who is placed in a new environment will learn a lot but often a different way than one might expect. Not a higher standard of living but a different standard of living. I have learnt a lot about people while staying here, thanks to all my friends who from the very first day met me with open arms and let me become one of them. Stu- dents and teachers have worked together to solve problems, accepting openmindedly my ideas, habits, and wishes with a friendli- ness possible only in a small town like Wabasso where everybody knows and trusts each other. I might forget what happened while I stayed here—who won the football games, where that nice sophmore girl lived, or what the class motto was. But it is impossible to forget Wabasso as a whole. A spirit, it has become a part of myself forever. When I later will look baok, Wabasso will be a lot of happy but different memories. Vein I fll ABOVE: Micheal Hagert and Ketil Albertsen. It is a big thing to be in America; not everyone who wants to go to America has the opportunity to go. That's why I appreciate it more and more. There are many things I learned about America and its people. The people are friendly and hospitable. America is beautiful and there are big differences between Holland and America. Here there are many hills and mountains. In Holland you drive straight and you won't find a hill in the road, bigger than 2 or 3 feet. Here you also have to drive bigger distances before you are in a village or town. In Holland you drive one mile, then you are in the next town or village. Also, in the food there is a big difference. We in Holland eat pretty much vege- tables and much fruit. Here they concentrate on meat. When you say the word Steak, every one fol- lows with the tongue the circle of the mouth. There are also big differences in the school. Here you can change your classes every nine weeks. In Holland we have five classes for the whole year. We don't have every day the same classes on the same hour. I en- joyed my year in school here very much. My contact with the teachers was very good and I had fun with them. In one sentence, I had a fantastic year with a fantastic family. I felt me completely at home by family Schumacher. I thank the school for an unforgettable year.
