JUBILEE Bicentennial Minute The year 1975 marked an important turning point for the community of Wabasso. On June ll -l6 of that year the village proudly observed her 75th birthday. Festivities began with the Miss Wabasso con- test, a first for Wabasso. Jeanne Franta became Miss Wabasso and was queen over all of the Jubi- lee festivities. A pageant presented by local residents told of Wabasso s birth and growth. It brought the community together and uncovered much unknown talent. The celebration also included a Ride-and-Tie race, a flower show, and a quilting bee. The climax for the three day celebration was Wabasso s Jubilee parade which included everything from a Model T to a live lion. The town of Wabasso, like many oth- ers, joined the country s bicentennial celebration. On October 23 Lt. Gov- ernor Rudy Perpich presented Wabasso with a bicentennial flag. He arrived here at 9 00 a.m. and talked with the sixth graders from St. Anne s and Wabasso Public School for an hour. Then he went to the social gathering at the City Hall. Mayor John Mauer be- gan by welcoming everyone. Lt. Govern- or Perpich gave a speech and the activ- ities planned by the bicentennial com- mittee were reviewed. Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor was one of the songs performed by the Pop Singers. The bicentennial flag was then pre- sented to the city and can be seen fly- ing proudly at the Post Office. fable of Contents EDITORS: NANCY PLAETZ JOAN ROBASSE ADVISORS: LOIS SPLITTGERBER JEFF LIEN WABASSO, MINNESOTA HOMECOMING THE HOMECOMING This year Wabasso made history by not having a home- coming king and queen. The coronation was replaced by a spirit week, During this week each grade had one day to present any activity. The favorite of many was a tug-of-war between each class sponsored by the juniors. The football team, under the slogan Jaw the Tig- ers, defeated Springfield by a decisive 3 -6 score. To put an end to Spirit Week, a dance was given in the gym. Music was provided by Whisk . PROM GUYS AND DOLLS After many hours of planning and decorating by the Junior class, the day of prom finally ar- rived. The night began with a banquet in the St.Anne's church basement at 6:00. The dance was held In the Wanda Legion Hall again this year. The grand march, beginning at 8:00, was made up of about 50 couples. Music was provided by Skogie . The senior class prophesy was read by Mickey Kelly and the will by Glen Miller. Many helped to make the prom a success, es- pecially the waitresses, Jill Paluck, Theresa Schilling, Jolene Woelfel, Clara Rholik, and the waiters, Nick Fischer, Danny Olson, Jay Schoo, and Terry Altprmatt. And those individuals possessing that talent were honored at the Awards programs throughout the year. Scholastic ability was re- cognized at the National Honor Society in the fall. Awards were given to achievers in FFA at their annual banquet. The Athletic Banquet ac- knowledged the outstanding performers in the sports area. Those excelling in areas such as music and journalism were honored at the Pine Arts Ice Cream Social. And the last awards pro- gram was held graduation night with seniors re- ceiving their well-deserved diplomas. Several of the more outstanding awards went to: Dick Jensen-American Legion Award, John Phillip Sousa Award Sue Ann Christensen-Cadet Band Director's Award Kathy Fischer-PTO Scholarship, L.M. A year of anticipation, planning, be- ginnings, and endings. The senior year was filled with many activities in pre- paration for graduation on May 20th. Items that most seniors acquired during the year were memory books, announce- ments, pictures and, of course, annuals. I have got a lot of new friends and had many new experi- ences. I have to 8ay that I don't regret my coming here. And I wish that you here at WHS could have as opportun- ity to come to Europe for one year as an exchange student. I think that I changed many opinions about the Unit- ed States and her people and those opinions were due to American crime movies, etc. I guess now my thoughts are more positive about your country. I haven t any plans to come back to the States to live here but I think I'd like to study somewhere here. Next time, when I come to the U.S.A., I sure will visit Wabasso. So special thanks to the teachers who have been able to tolerate me and to all my friends here for making this year a special one. See you, MEXICO Among our foreign exchange students this year was Mario Garcia from Mexico. During his U-nionth stay he lived with the Russel Holznagel family. Sharing the role with his twin brother, he watohes over four younger brothers and sisters in Mexico. Mario s main reason for visiting the United States was to learn the English language better. Learning English was the hardest part of adjusting to life in the United States for him. His future plans after he returns home include at- tending a state university and studying to become a doctor. NORWAY Being a foreign student is a unique ex- perience that no. one will be able to under- stand without having tried. You re life is turned upside down; you have no really firm point to ding to; you have nobody to go to for help the first time; you re alone. Naturally, you get to know yourself very well and develop a personality that didn't exist before. Anybody who is placed in a new environment will learn a lot but often a different way than one might expect. Not a higher standard of living but a different standard of living. I have learnt a lot about people while staying here, thanks to all my friends who from the very first day met me with open arms and let me become one of them. Stu- dents and teachers have worked together to solve problems, accepting openmindedly my ideas, habits, and wishes with a friendli- ness possible only in a small town like Wabasso where everybody knows and trusts each other. I might forget what happened while I stayed here—who won the football games, where that nice sophmore girl lived, or what the class motto was. But it is impossible to forget Wabasso as a whole. A spirit, it has become a part of myself forever. When I later will look baok, Wabasso will be a lot of happy but different memories. Vein I fll ABOVE: Micheal Hagert and Ketil Albertsen. It is a big thing to be in America; not everyone who wants to go to America has the opportunity to go. That's why I appreciate it more and more. There are many things I learned about America and its people. The people are friendly and hospitable. America is beautiful and there are big differences between Holland and America. Here there are many hills and mountains. In Holland you drive straight and you won't find a hill in the road, bigger than 2 or 3 feet. Here you also have to drive bigger distances before you are in a village or town. In Holland you drive one mile, then you are in the next town or village. Also, in the food there is a big difference. We in Holland eat pretty much vege- tables and much fruit. Here they concentrate on meat. When you say the word Steak, every one fol- lows with the tongue the circle of the mouth. There are also big differences in the school. Here you can change your classes every nine weeks. In Holland we have five classes for the whole year. We don't have every day the same classes on the same hour. I en- joyed my year in school here very much. My contact with the teachers was very good and I had fun with them. In one sentence, I had a fantastic year with a fantastic family. I felt me completely at home by family Schumacher. I thank the school for an unforgettable year. JUNIORS Perhaps the most difficult task of the jun- ior year is running concessions. Finding enough workers and giving service at the games throughout the year is a full-time job. IN THE NEWS Taken from the RABBIT TRACKS Homecoming Controversy Contest, a dance, para the football game round year s Homecoming. WHS will busy preparing for Homecomi the week of September 29 to Oo ober 2. Friday, October will still be known as Home coming, with the days prior tc be Spirit Week. Each grade has been assigned one day of the week to plan for special activities. Suggestions were open to all classes so hopefully some fun and spirit- raising days are anticipated. Each class has twenty minutes for their day, in which to hold their contests or announce any results from a contest they might have. The parade will be held in the afternoon, making the usual route through Wabasso. That night the Rabbits meet the Springfield Tigers in a confer- ence game. Following the game, a dance will be held in the school gymnasium. There will be no king and queen as part of this year s festivities. The senior class along with the Student Council helped in the making of this decision. Dear Editor, As most of you readers know, the senior class of 1975 76 voted not to select homecoming king and queen candidates as a part of this year s homedoming festivities. As a member of the Wabasso community and of the high school faculty, I do not feel the senior class had the right to make such an important decision, especially a decision that affects so many. Home- coming is an activity for the entire community, and especially for all graduates of Wabasso school. I feel that homecoming without royalty will be missing an important quality. The senior class should be mature enough to choose quali- fied representatives without incurring hard feelings. If the seniors do not wish to represent their school I am sure there would be many underclassmen who would find it an honor. Joyce Kremer Sit-Down As the fourth quarter of the year neared, a tension between students and administration be- gan to reach its breaking point. Some students felt that the school s discipline policy was unfair in several areas and not explicit enough in others. The conflict resulted in a sit-down by a portion of the student body. Talks between students and ad- ministration began. At times the assembly became almost uncontrollable; but as the day came to an end, the num- ber of students dwindled. By Tuesday, less than 20 students remained in the hall. The school board was asked in and the administration agreed to a meeting with the dissatis- fied students. Unfortunately, the meeting never took place, and the problem was forgotten instead of being solved. Quarter System The Quarter System is in its second year at WHS. Its purpose is to give students a greater variety of classes and more of a choice during their high school career. The English and social classes, for example, have all been divided into specific areas, each class lasting a quarter. So instead of taking senior Eng- lish or junior social, high school students all attended the different classes together, mak- ing sure they receive the re- quired classes and then taking the required elective classes. The system breaks up the year. If a student is really getting bored with the classes he has one quarter, he can always look forward to a change the next. The quarter system also gives the student a greater opportunity to get to know more of his fel- low school mates. Since classes usually are not confined to just sophomores or just juniors, clas- ses usually include students from 10th to 12th grade. The system also has its pro- blems, though. Because of variety and novelty of some classes, many new and expensive materials had to be purchased. The extra cost posed a heavy burden on the already low school budget. The shortage of funds also created the need to cut back on teachers, which ultimate- ly, will cut down on elective classes. 39 All-State Chorus Selection Rabbit Tips His Hat •..to Mike Salfer for winning third at the Rooster Crowing Contest at the State Fair. ...to the sophomores who sold magazines. ...to Randy Baune for setting a new school record of 1000 yds. gained in a season. ...to the FFA'ers who partic- ipated in the FFA vs. Lions Club Compicking Contest. ...to Randy Baune and Kevin Honetschlager for making the KMHL Football team. • • .to the zombies who appeared with the chorus on KEYC Sounds of Christmas . ... to Dan Zimmer for being the first WHS wrestler to be state wrestling champ. ... to Perry Jaeger for advanc- ing to the State Chess Tour- naments in Burnsville. ...to Ms. Butler and Mr. Gary Severson and their new son, Ian Matthew Butler Severson. ...to Pete Jenniges for win- ning the Mr. Ugly Contest. ...to Judy Pistulka for being chosen best actress in the dis- trict one-act play contest. ...to all the people who went home to get a suitcase so they could stay in Wabasso during the blizzard. ...to this year's FFA Sweet- heart candidates: Ann Price, Nancy Miller, Pam Winn, Vicki Stage, Ruth Prechel, Sue Sko- blik, Sandy Mahal, LisaHagert. ...to Ann Price for getting into the 20 semi finalists for state president at the FHA Con- vention. ...to the lucky kids who have graduated early. ...to the Dairy Products and Fish and Wild Life Teams for advancing to state competi- tion. 40 ...to John Schueller for re- ceiving Honorable Mention and to Joel Samyn for being chosen to the first team all-area bas- ketball team by the Marshall Independent. ... to Janet Bock for being cho- sen for a chance to be in the National FFA Chorus. ...to Kris Goblirsch and Gor- dy Woelfel for being elected to Girls' and Boys' State re- spectively. Bicentennial Speech Contest Held If you had entered room 118 on December 2nd and during 6th period, words of this sort would have probably been heard, Our country was bom of gun powder , or Because of the hard work and determination of our forefathers, America remains to- day as it was 200 years ago. This, of course, is not a rehear- sal for the Bicentennial Min- ute , but rather, the students of Intro. to Speech who are pre- paring original speeches on the theme, What the ideals on which our nation was founded have for me, a young American. After all the speeches had been presented, the best were chosen; and these were recorded on Monday, December 8 and then sent to Redwood Falls for final judging. Those students chosen, Sheila Gales, Art Guetter, Mark Schumacher and Kevin Friedley, are now eligible for top prize Recently selected for parti- cipation in the Minnesota All- Star Chorus were Val Paluck and Bill Konrardy. Sponsored by the Minnesota's Music Educators' Association, the choir rehearses for a week next summer and per- forms the following year. The speech- es are judged 20$ on delivery, 35$ on originality and 1+5$ on content. ...And that's the way it was, December 12, 1975 Cheerleaders Rally Spirit Trying out for cheer leading last spring was a time of deci- sion for those who tried out. This is going to be a new year, a year of change. Everyone has busy schedules and cheerleaders are no excep- tion. This year the girls had to choose between cheerleading and girls' sports. Also this year the girls chose the sports that they'd like to cheer for, providing that it wasn't two winter sports. There'11 be a lot of new faces in the basketball and wrestling cheerleading squads. WHS Bicentennial Minute Before Christinas a speech con- test was held called ,rWhat Ify Bicentennial Heritage Means to Me. Of course, this contest was only open to U.S. citizens, so we decided to give our foreign exchange students a chance to present their views; and now an inside look at What YOUR Bicentennial Hertiage means to Them. When asked about what they liked about the idea of the celebration, answers ranged from It s O.K., just O.K. and 'No- thing bad about it to It's a normal thing and I like it . But when asked about what they disliked about it, there was agreement or no answer. The main fault of our celebration is that we've let it become too commercialized. However, each person had specific dislikes. Ketil calls it the American B-U-Y centennial. Jurjen said he s seen everything from red, white, and blue cupcakes and kleenexes to bicentennial cas- kets, and Jarmo says the funniest thing he's seen in America is the color guard at basketball games. The whole idea of girls carrying guns and flags seems ridiculous to him. As a closing statement, Jurjen said he hopes there are enough Bicentennial Minutes to make it throu i the year. And Jarmo said These few minutes about the American Bicentennial were sponsored by Jarmo, INC. Teachers’Aid Program Approximately forty students who are sophmores, juniors, or seniors have signed up as teacher aids • Each aid takes the course for one semester and receives grades and credits. The Aid program has been go- ing on for three years. It is one of the few organized teacher aid programs in the state. Top Performance Every year Wabasso High spon- sors an entry to the one-act play contest. This year's en- try was an excerpt from The Glass Menagerie directed by Mrs. Rob- ert Wetmore. On Saturday, the 17th of January, ofter just two weeks of I practice, the play took first place at the sub-district con- test held in Wabasso. The play received two A ratings and advanced to district the following Saturday. There the play received A and B ratings and took second to San- born. Cast members included Judy Pistulka, Bill Konrardy, and Stephanie Pistulka. They are pictured above. Now, it is time to find out what they do. Well, mostly what- ever the teacher asks. A few things are help students with studybooks, read aloud, listen to the students read, and help them with their homework. The most important thing is to help with reading tasks. The students being helped are in St. Annes' Parochial, Wabasso Public Elementary, and Jr. High. Mrs. Kratzke, the supervisor, is always looking for more teacher aids. If you are in- terested, see her. BELOW: Helper Jon Schmidt. FHA Convention Held Over five hundred junior and senior high girls congregated at Wabasso Public School on Saturday, November 8. The event which was attracting all these students was the 1975 District Eleven Future Homemakers of America Convention. During the fall season, the annual meeting was held to elect new officers, exchange ideas, attend workshops, and become better acquainted with FHA and its workings and its purposes. Wabasso had the privilege of hosting the convention this year because Kathy Fischer was the district president. The conven- tion was held at the home of the district president. This meeting was a district effort. Everyone had their part in it, which made it all more meaningful and worthwhile. Declam Team Receives Trophy It's hard to believe that 1U kids put together on a schoolbus could be so quiet. But when those li+ nervous kids sure the WHS declam team on their way to the district meet at Redwood Falls, it is understandable. Their nervousness paid off when seven of the 11+ advanced to the region meet and four members were named alternates. The team efforts were duly rewarded with the second place trophy they received for having such a large number of students advance to region. T A COMMITTEE Take My Advice Groups-, Clusters , T A , all refer to an experiment at WHS this year. The Teacher Advisor system is, In theory, supposed to allow the students and teach- ers to come to a better understanding of each other. Each teacher has a group of about 18 students, with three groups mak- ing up a cluster. The representative committee includes one student represent- ative from each cluster, four teachers from the T A planning committee and Mr. Neve, a non-voting member. For 1$ min- utes a day, each group meets to discuss problems and feelings, or anything that's happening in school. T A has not been a successful experiment at WHS, but no one would have known that if it hadn't been tried. LEFT: Teacher Advisor Committee-Row 1: L.Grossman, L.Neve, M.Weis, R.Adams, J. Kremer.
