Bye 1910-1974 r During his first year here as su- perintendent of School District 61+0, Melvin Salmela took over the many and sometimes difficult responsibil- ities that all superintendents must face. These responsibilities in- cluded carrying out the school board decisions, hiring teachers, deciding on all educational matters, and set- ting and enforcing school regulations for all school activities. Melvin Salmela was bom in Sebeka, Minnesota. Before taking over the superintendent s job here in Wabas- so, he had been superintendent at Nashua, Iowa, for eight years. Mr. Salmela received his education at Floodwood, Minnesota, the University of Minnesota, and at the University of Northern Iowa. RIGHT: Superintendent Melvin Sal- mela. ADMINISTRATION In the Heat of the Night This past year the school board dealt with their usual problems. They tried to make the school system satisfactory to students, fac- ulty, and parents. At the end of the school year, Mrs. Betty Zollner resigned. The board was left with the choice of appointing some- one new or leaving it as a six-member board. BELOW: School Board-Row It L. There's something the matter with my locker; it von't open. What's happening! The lights won't come on! These are statements that the custodians are faoed with every year. But then on the other hand, the custodians can be heard saying, Would who ever has taken our eight-foot ladder please bring it back? LEFT: LeRoy Irlbeck. LOWER LEFT: Virgil Ham- mers chmidt. BELOW: Don Friedley, Dick Cady. Singing In The Kitchen Can you imagine serving 1+50 excited, boisterous students in a matter of an hour? Impossible, right? No matter how impossible it seems, the cooks managed to do just that while a snow storm bore down on Wabasso and the surrounding area. This was just one of the great feats the cooks managed; the other is suc- cessfully feeding those 1+50 students every school day during the year. ABOVE: C. Friedley, E. Benson, M. Friedley, R, Goblirsch. LEFT: D. Kenney, M. Steffi, V. Johanneck. 13 I Can Help Can you imagine a day without the secretaries? Each day they keep track of the students. They take care of such things as make-up slips, and collecting lunch money; typing forms, letters and making school newsletters always keep them busy. The secretaries are constantly answering questions like what time does a bus leave for a game or where is a certain person . '’Mrs. Georgius is our reliable bookkeeper. She must tackle the money problems for the school. She is assisted by Mrs. Breyfogle. Solnedftne many jobs that kept Mrs. Sinclair busy throughout the year were checking physical education students for hearing, eye sight, and scoleosis, which is curvature of the spine. A new addition to her office was a personal tele- phone. ABOVE: D. Schueller, E. Georgius, J. Niemann, S. Bock. LEFT: B. Maurer. BELOW: P. Sinclair. LOWER LEFT:' L. And the inarching band survived a shivering wind to present a halftime show titled A Grid Iron Portrait . The Country Velvets entertained the many dancers in the gym after the royalty marched down the yellow brick road. The next day every- one was tired; but happy! Weeks before the day of homecoming, every class was busy making many plans for the big day. The school was buzzing with activity late into the nights. And then the big day came. The faculty and the theater class each presented the students with a skit, and the band played a selection. The drum roll raised the already high excitement level to a peak Adrenalin rushed through the blood of the royalty candidates as Queen Deanzie and King Randy were crowned. Kiss a girl Cornelius, you don't know any girls. These are only a few of the many lines that brought laughter from the audience as the WHS drama department presented The Match- maker Thornton Wilder's non rauscial version of Hello Dolly, on November 8th and 9th. The Matchmaker is Wilder's delightful farce about having wonderful days, spending money and being foolish. But most of all its about adventure. Like Bamaby says, ... we hope that in your lives you have just the right amount of sitting quietly at home, and just the right amount of adventure. ABOVE: Row 1: K. Franta, J. Gladitsch, J. The hall was decked out with purple and white, revolving around a garden house and spouting fountain. The eve- ning was termed a success, as the 1975 Prom came to a close. Another is Halloween which can not be left undone without some sort of fun, so they held a dance in honor of this occasion. Let18 not forget about Red and White Day , better known as Valen- tine's, the class held a dance again for all those with sweethearts or just friends. Tension was building up for weeks before the driver s permit test. Three times this year there were many happy faces as the examiner handed them their permits. 47 T% Guetter K. Haag L. Hagert M. They were from El Salvador, Brazil, Japan, and Mexico. The students enjoyed their American home and the experiences they had; yet they were all eager to return to their country. Maria Aquino was one of the four foreign ex- change students who went to school at WHS. Maria is from San Salvador, El Salvador. She stayed with the Dennis Fennem family. Last fall she was a member of the girls volleyball team. She enjoyed going to football and basketball games and wrestling matches. For Theatre Night Maria gave a native dance. Norma Garcia is from Monterey, Mexico. She has been staying with the Holznagel family since her arrival on September 3rd She was excited about our snowy winter and kept herself busy playing on the girls volleyball team. When she returned home, Noma brought her host sister Loria along with her. Alda Campos was the last of the four exchange students to arrive. She is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and stayed with the Ray Stynski fam- ily. Like Maria and Norma, Alda en- joyed watching the basketball and wrestling teams perform. She has made many friends here and will al- ways be remembered. Akihiko Yamageshi, known to most as Al , is from Toyota, Japan, and stayed with the Ralph Hagert family. He was active in most sports and was a member of the WHS baseball team. Besides learning English, he also studied German. He and the other foreign exchange students have been given a class ring and the 1975 year- book of WHS. SENIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL Leader of the Pack The Student Council, under the leadership of Mr. Leino and Mr. Neve, again sponsored homecoming. The sixteen members formed different committees to help make the festivities run as smoothly as possible. Each class officer automatically becomes a student council member. So you see, not only do they have to make the class run perfectly, but they also have to take on the responsibility of the whole student body! ABOVE: Sr. High Student Council-Row 1: R. There is a very valid reason behind the renaming. As of this year the club not only includes letter- men but also letterwomen. Along with the member- ship change came a controversy. Some members felt the W Club should remain strictly male. This may be the reason for the reduction in size of the club. ABOVE: W” Club-Row 1: M. Shemon, G. Schoo, F. Petracek, G. Goblirsch, M.
