WHERE THE ACTION IS In 1967-68 WHS was a place of action. Activities ranging from sports and clubs to publications and productions were enjoyed by students. Seniors especially were active at WHS in '67-68, as it marked the count down year. It was their last first day, last homecoming, and last prom. Students will long remember the 1967-68 school year. A year filled with as much 1 action as was seen at WHS can not soon be forgotten. Students, teachers, administrators, custodians, cooks, and secretaries are the people that energize the quiet con- fines of the inanimate school building at Wabasso High School. Students provide the embryo from which all forms of school life develop. Involvement by all other school per- sonnel points toward one goal- that which allows all students to grow to the best of their abilities. Instructing Faith Dallmann in typing class is Mrs. Keil. Miss Stephany discusses Algebraic func- tions with ninth grade students. Teachers Induce Student Activity Teachers strive to inspire students to search the realms of learning to find answers to life's eternal questions. After finding hypotheses students must act to test them and seek goals for them- selves and their nation. A characteristic of WHS teachers is their willingness to give students indi- vidual help. Whenever it is possible, teachers will work students into their busy schedule. Because this is not always possible, reading consultants were added to the staff to give students extra aid during school hours. Kaye Fixsen smiles as she hands in her daily assignment to Mrs. Judy Jerpbak. 14 Patt Large and Joan Weber select different kinds of material from Mrs. Lund's sewing basket. Each year the task of hiring excel- lent teachers and other employees falls on the shoulders of these people. This, although a major task, is only one of their many responsibilities. The six people who served on the school board this year were: Mr. Robert Daub, Mr. Myron Fuhr, Mr. Leonard Hauptli, Mr. Clarence Dresow, Mr. Melvin Bittner, and Mr. Erwin Kruse. Mr. Stanley Stassen, a long time school board member, died on Decem- ber 11 from injuries received in a fall. Mr. Stassen served as a member from 1954 to 1967. Juniors Sponsor Prom Junior Class members experienced their busiest year of high school in 1967-68. If one wishes to find Where the Action Is, a look at the Junior Class activities will show one place where it is. The biggest event for the Juniors was hosting the Junior-Senior Prom. This took months of planning and involved all members-of the class. Rings were ordered by the Juniors in the fall and received in March. This was also an exas- perating event as one ring had to be agreed upon by all class members and upon arrival had to be shown to all. After the Grand March, thinos livened up. The team was not ex- pected to finish the season much above .500, but after surprising the pre-season favorite Wood lake in a 12-12 tie in the second game of the season, the Rabbits picked up the morre ntum needed for their great season. Besides the tremendous team effort, several individuals had outstanding achievements. Powering the high scoring offense was quarter- back Brad Wegner, who was selected to the All- State eight team. Brad set a passing record as he compiled 97 completions in 166 attempts for a 58. 4 average and 18 touchdowns. Leading the receivers Paul Maertens had 43 receptions and 11 touchdowns Pat Alcorn rushed for 674 yards in 95 carries. Stand-outs in the aggressive defensive play which held opponents to 97 points in eight games were Joe Brand, Larry Leske, Bill Muenchow, Harlan Fenger, Paul Maertens, Larry Reese, Doug Johnson, and Pat Alcorn. J. Irlbeck applies a headlock as he makes a tackle which a nother Rab- bit had missed . Co-captains Pat Alcorn and Joe Brand led Wabasso to their first undefeated season. Receiving a congratulatory pat from Coach Starner is Larry Leske as he returns to the sidelines . 49 Pat Alcorn, Wabasso's leading ground gainer, returns an interception behind some rushing interference. Harlan Fenger pulls down an Echo player as Muenchow and Leske move in. Sid Schultz eludes the grasp of a Belview player and gains extra yardage. Before a Rabbit steps on the football field he must wear more than $100 worth of equipment to prevent serious injuries. Pat Sinclair makes the catch just out of the BACK TO FRONT: W. Wabasso Beats Hanley Falls in a 104-102 Game Highlighting the 1967-68 basketball season was a game in which both teams scored over the century mark, and Paul Maertens set a Wabasso record with 51 points in a 104-102 victory. Brad Wegner also set a record as he sank 15 straight free throws over a period of several games. Wabasso's Rabbits ended the 1967-68 season with a 10-10 overall record and a 6-4 record in ccnfffence play whicn notched them tnird place. With a lot of individual work and determination, the team managed to finish second in the conference. An individual that stood out this year was Joe Brand. Joe finished first in the conference, and first in the district in the mile run. Joe also recieved the most valuable player and Athlete of the Year awards. WHERE THE ACTION WAS Although each student at WHS is unique in himself, as a group they are typical of students in high schools throughout the nation. They bustle during the school hours, and hustle after school hours during participation in various organizations, publications and sports, but this vortex of student energy focuses on inactivity as students board that bus forthat last ride home of the 7-68 school year. Advertising Keeps the Rabbit on the Move The Wabasso Rabbit staff would like to extend a thank you to all the sponsors for making this annual possible. We appreciate your patronage and service which makes it possible for the Rabbit to serve the Southwestern Minnesota communities- Where the Action Is.
