They sponsored a student faculty basketball game, the proceeds going toward the purchase of a popcorn machine; a clothing drive, which brought in a total of 307 pounds of clothing; and a charity auction. Student Council Ralph and Butch are working hard packing up all of the clothing. More bags had to be sent for because of the amount that was contributed. Just checking the chart, says Paul. This is a picture of the chart taken on one of the first days of the Clothing Drive. The chart looked quite a bit different at the end of the drive. This is the first year WHS has had a mixed chorus for years. The chorus and the director, Mr. Sol- heim, had to start from scratch, but a lot was accomplished by the year's end. On December 19th the chorus, in a joint concert with the band and grade school, sang several unusual Christmas carols which were en- joyed by all. They also took part in the annual music festival at San- born. The Madrigal group was organized in the spring of the year and com- peted in the music festival where they received very good criticisms and an A rating. By receiving this grade, they qualified to com- pete in the regional contest at Worthington, April 25. Members of the Girls' Glee Club, which met one day a week, are, left to right, back row: D. They also played several numbers at the spring band concert. Cornets in full form. Left to right are B. Kintzi, J. Magin, R. Siegfried, K. Kruse. Band One of the real thrills for band members dur- ing the '57-58 school year was taking part in Band Day at the University of Minnesota on September 28th. Many days of marching prac- tice were spent before appearing in Memorial Stadium that warm Saturday. The band also marched at Homecoming, forming several in- teresting formations during the half-time show. On December 19th, the band gave a joint Christ mas concert with the grade school and the choruses. This concert concluded with a band number, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas ; the dialogue for it was read by Gloria Froelich On January 28th, the Belview High School Band presented a concert to the students, and on March 4th, Wabasso bandsmen gave a concert for the Belview Student Body. On Sunday, March 9th, they gave their annual spring concert to the public. Also featured on the program were the Junior Band and a fife and bottle band. Highlight of the program was a saxophone solo by Rachel Wittwer, accom- panied by the band. On April 11th, the long-awaited music festival was held at Sanborn. Of the twelve instru- mental and ensembles entered, eleven received I ratings. All of the ensembles and all instru- mentalists except freshman soloists, who were eliminated by a state ruling, also entered the regional at Worthington, held on April 25th. Four new drums purchased during the year have brought those satisfied expressions into members of the percussion section. From left to right are D. Wilson, B. Schaffran, K. Kruse, M. Wittwer, and C. HOMECOMING October 11th was the date set for Homecoming. The festivities began with a parade held that afternoon. A pep fest, held in the town square at which time the queen candidates gave a short talk, concluded the parade. The coronation was held in the gymnasium after the football game against Belview. Don Lang, earlier chosen to be King of the festivities, crowned Rachel Bode Homecoming Queen. After the cor- onation a dance was held in the caf- eteria which had been decorated by the junior class. Irlbeck and lying are R. Weber and H. Bergstrom. Hey, break it up, you two! Tick and Mrs. Ratchet are at it again. Senior Play A very successful class play was given March 29 to a large crowd. The play, entitled No More Homework, provided many chuckles to the audience besides giving them an evening of good entertainment. a pretty girl is like a melody! Oh, Goona, here I come says Buzz, newly appointed vice- principal, as Pamela looks on in amazement. The accusing finger is pointed at Tallulah, she took the money. Junior Play 4 ,  The Junior Class Play, en- titled You Can't Kiss Caro- line, was presented to the public the evening of Novem- ber 8th. Director of the de- lightful comedy was Mrs. Gorden Valle. Eleven of these, receiving the highest ratings at the local contest held March 10, also attended the district speech festival held at Fairfax March 25. Four of these people, Mary, Carillon, Joyce and Bob, received superior ratings. Bob was also selected to be one of the district representatives at the regional contest. His selection, What It Was, Was Football, became one of the biggest laugh makers during the school year. Declam students who participated in the dramatic readings and ex- temporaneous manuscript reading were, standing left to right: J. Berg, C. Kintzi, D. Bradley, M. Almjeld. Sitting: P. Goudy, B. Fixsen, and K. Fixsen. Selected to attend the dis- trict speech festival from this group were J. Berg and C. Kintzi, dra- matic; and M. Almjeld and P. Goudy, extemporaneous reading. In the humorous reading and mem- orized oratory divisions these people took part. Standing are B. Domine, G. Froelich, J. Hauptli, B. Moore, H. Bergstrom, O. Fixsen, J. Schaff- ran and M. Wittwer. Sitting are R. Kintzi, E. Anderson, V. Quesen- berry, K. Irlbeck, and L. Kruse. Not pictured: R. Bode. G. Froelich and J. Hauptli won the superior ratings in memorized oratory; and R. Kintzi and R. Front row: Mr. Skelton, Mr. Mattke and Mr. Davis. Not pictured: Mr. Patterson. A little out-numbered, Mr. Lundbohm is still giving them a rough time. It doesn't look like there's a referee in sight. My, just look at that form Wonder if he made the bas- ket? ? Even the cheerleaders got into the act. Here Mrs. Hanscom sinks a basket for the teachers. Student-Faculty Game One of the least-forgotten dates for bas- ketball players, students, and parents was the Student-Faculty game. Held on Satur- day, January 25, the game was sponsored by the Student Council to raise money for a popcorn machine. The game began quietly enough, but as it progressed some of the strangest things began to happen, as can be seen by the pictures. Concerts A combined winter concert, in which both grade school and high school students took part, was held on December 19th. At right is one of the picture frames presented by the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades as their part in the production. Sunday, March 9th, was the date of the Spring band concert. Taking part were the Senior Band, the Beginner's Band, and the Fife and Bottle Band shown at left. On May 24th, a formal band and chorus concert was held. The gymnasium was beautifully decorated with spring flowers, and with the girls all dressed in pretty, pastel formals, the sight was lovely to behold. Senior Trip Part of the time spent in Minnea- polis on the Senior Skip Day May 7th, was spent at the Museum of Natural History at the University. This was one of the displays set up behind glass. It looks very real, doesn't it? Another of the stops for the Seniors was the Foshay Tower. Here is Darlene look- ing at the view. After looking at Minnea- polis from the Foshay, the class walked back to the theatre and saw Cinerama. It was raining, so everyone got soaked. 36 Junior-Senior Banquet Secrets, secrets, and more secrets. Decorations were painted behind closed doors, talking was stopped when Seniors rounded the corner, but the Seniors found out the theme of the banquet anyway. The Wild West was the theme selected by the Juniors, and it was well carried out in the decorating. The banquet was held May 10th. Typical of a wild-west theme, deco- rations were carried out with mountains, cactuses, and a round- up scene. The banquet began with an appetizer which seems to be still untouched at this table. Karen and Walter, two of the waiters and waitresses, placing the salads on the table.
