Thank - You! If the students of a school make up the body, the faculty and administration most certainly are the skeleton and framework. All year the administration worked to keep Wabasha High running smoothly while the faculty strove to instill knowledge in the minds of their students. Each teacher and each member of the administration became a small link in the invisible chain that provided unity. Without their combined efforts in studies, activities, and sports could our school spirit have soared as it did, or our triumphs been so sweet? We think not. With deep appreciation and in recognition of the important part they have played in our lives we would like to dedicate this annual to you, the faculty and administration. ACADEMICS School nurse Mrs. Amdahl caught at a busy moment. Junior High and Senior High Administrators. L-R Jr. High Principal Mr. Hruby, Superintendant Mr. Patton, Sr. High Principal Mr. Doty. 10 Smiling Faces Although most of us see these people at least once a day few of us stop to realize the work they do each day to keep our school running. This is probably because each one always has a ready smile for everyone. They aid not only the teachers but also the students. As this year's senior class we'd like to say thank you to the administrators and office assistants. Upper Left: You weren't supposed to SEE that! Mrs. Graner. Office Assistants L-R Mrs. Dose, Mrs. Walter, Mrs, Graner, and Miss Foley. 1 1 Mr, Nelson and Mr. Boots, Wabasha High counselors, confer with an army recruiter. Mrs, Lindgren, Mrs. Lager, Mrs. Jacob are getting ready to feed a hungry crew. With a Little Help From Our Friends Whenever we have a problem, a hunger pain, or are in need of something there are always certain people who we can depend on to help us. If it’s a scheduling problem the counselors would be more than glad to help smooth out the conflict. If at noon you find you have an unbearable hunger you can always take in the hot lunch for the day. And if by some very unfortunate incident you find yourself LOCKED IN the school more than likely you don't have to panic because one of the custodians will be more than happy to let you out. So in closing we would like to salute these people for aiding us in our sometimes trivial problems. Thank you!! Don't we have any more potatoes??? Mrs. Lindgren, Mrs. J acob. Miss Marz, Mre. Nominations for king were Bob Abbott, Tim LaRocque, Robin Passe, and Dan Theismann. Queen nominations were Jean Arens, Connie Gusa, Barb Lee, and Wendy Noll. The coronation took place on Thursday night and the results are shown on the opposite page as is another added attraction, the crown bearer, Shannon Frost. Friday was highlighted by a Faculty-Student basketball game, complete with faculty cheerleaders. The carnival was concluded Friday night with the Wabasha-Adams basketball game followed by a dance with music provided by the Molly McGuires. Are you gone yet? M. Hawley, S. We can become deeply involved in sports, music, drama or study, but they all work together and help keep our school active. We can work at our own rate in our chosen classes to achieve the goal in life we want. We all pitch in and help keep the spirit up and the gossip down. We can do our own thing in school but we need each and every students' support to keep us where we are. 44 Judy Passe hard at work?!! ATHLETICS Gotya! J. Burkhardt and B. Lehnertz Left - Coaches D. Nelson and C. Karger display the Bud Grant look. Indians Capture Conference Title This year's football team proved that size isn't everything! Although the Indians were comparitively small, what they lacked in size they made up for with determination, ability, and desire. All of these factors truly were the backbone of the Indian team. The Indian football team ran up a 7-1 over all record and a 6-0 conference record giving them a share of the conference crown with Adams. Because of the new conference alignment the Indians were not able to play Adams. Out of fifty-two schools in the area the Wabasha defense was rated number one. They held our opponents to only 38 points. The offense, which tallied 287 points, was rated second behind Albert Lea. These top ratings are attributed to both the team and fine coaching of Chuck Karger and Richard Nelson. Because of their impressive record the 1971 Indians will be a team to remember! The team was centered around its three tall men and two quick quards. Most of the team’s success, according to Coach Loretz, was attributed to their ability to work the ball inside for the good shot. The squads' only loss was to Red Wing in the District III basketball finals. The overall record was a sparkling 20-1 which couldn't have been attained without the cooperation and determination of all the players. We placed 12 wrestlers in tournaments this year, filling all 12 categories. The tournament was held at Rochester State Junior College and thirteen other schools participated. We ended our season with a 3 5 record. 57 SCORES This was a record year for the Wabasha High track team. Under the direction of coach Steve Wick the team tied or broke ten school records. Five records were set by Wabasha trackmen in the sub-district meet at Byron despite the cold and rain. This year's team captured the Centennial Conference Championship for the first time. In the meet everyone gave all they had, setting most of our school records that day. They also took third place in the sub-district meet being beat out of first by 4 points and second by only 2 points. We had people qualify in 9 events for the district. At the District III meet Wabasha scored 19 points giving them fourth place, the best they have ever done in the District. At the District meet we had three individuals qualify for the Regional meet. They are John Glomski in the 100 yard dash. WOMEN'S LIB COMES TO W. H.S. Women have finally made the big breakthrough in sports at Wabasha High. What was initially considered an all male sport has been proved different. Under the guidance of Miss Olson a girls’ basketball team was formed. They sported an overall season record of 3-1. Their only loss was to Mazeppa but Mazeppa had the advantage of the home court. Their victories were over Mazeppa also, which proves they continually improved as the season wore on. S. Malone shows her perfect form in shooting as D. Wilcox, K. Passe, and D. On the colder evenings most of the time was spent in the chalet watching the braver souls outside. No matter what it was the winter weather of Minnesota again brought the welcome white that the skiers so eagerly look forward to. The Pep Club this year contributed their spirit and enthusiasm to make our pep fests and games some of the noisiest in Wabasha history. They also demonstrated their artistic ability by decorating the halls with many colorful signs. Setting examples of excellent sportsmanship and school spirit were this year's Lettermen. Members must hold at least one letter in some varsity sport. Their activities included the sale of pens. Below: Baby it's cold outside c. Abbott, S. Perry. 1st Row L-R B. Wolfe, A. Greenheck, B. The large membership exhibits the enthusiasm of the students, particularly those in their first year of Spanish. Their activities centered around the preparation of Spanish foods, guest speakers at their meetings, and participation in the annual staff's Spring Carnival. We wish next year's club buena suerte. The FTA has been a very active organization this year. They participated in Project Understanding, a student exchange program between area schools; money raising projects included the selling light bulbs and buttons. Perhaps the meaning behind the butterfly buttons puts into words the spirit of our future teachers. Hope is the memory of the future. Ed. teacher, meetings were held at least once a week and sometimes more often. At these meetings each girl could participate in any activity she wished such as basketball, volleyball, or jumping on the trampoline. Because most of the members are underclassmen next year’s membership should be even greater. For half time entertainment this year our Drill Team performed at most of the home basketball games and were invited to perform at the district tournaments. The gymnastics team consisted mostly of underclassmen who got together after school and practiced their procedures so they were able to perform at one home game. Good Luck next year girls. This year’s pep band has been present at pep fests to add volume to the deafening cheers. The band was present at the Watermelon and Loyalty Day Parades. In addition to their usual fall, Christmas and spring concerts, they also spent an afternoon entertaining the elderly at the Nursing Home. The red and white was proudly worn by the Wabasha High Band. The huge bonfire which they built for Homecoming will long be remembered. The Sophomores also conducted various fund raising projects and began making plans for their class trip. The whole year was not spent in work though. They also sponsored class activities such as roller skating parties. Suilmann. The students at Wabasha High had a fabulous year in all of their activities including fooling around. They enjoyed all of their spare time and sometimes they even enjoyed their class time. They had a wonderful time in the old halls of W. H.S. The class of 72 was composed of 95 members who contributed to help give Wabasha High one of its best years scholastically and athletically. Upon graduation 24 of its members were declared honor students, that is, these people maintained a B average or better throughout their high school years. Members of the class participated in many activities such as homecoming, plays, declam, and athletics. We'd like to thank the underclassmen for helping to make these events possible. We are left with many pleasant memories to cherish. The class officers who were elected by the class members are as follows: President: Sue Schierts V.
