POSTAL STRIKE WARRIOR Yearbook Of Wabasha High School Wabasha, Minnesota Editor Jean Marcou Advisors Miss Hamilton Miss Pehle We’ve Only Just Begun The final tests, the caps and gowns, the diplomas, and last farewells seem to signify the end to a part of our life that was very important to all of us. All these precious things will, before long, be only passing memories. We look forward now to a life full of adventure and new experiences that will be different for everyone of us, for we've only iust begun. 4 A Lifetime Of Dedication We are dedicating our annual to you, Mr. Concidine, for all you have done to make our school what it is today. All the years of service you have given us are greatly appreciated. Without your guidance we would have been lost many times. You always showed great concern when confronted with problems that we have had. We hope that you can leave our school with pleasant memories of the past and with the feeling of accomplishment and pride in what you have done. We thank you, Mr. Concidine. Homecoming ’70 The cold weather failed to dampen the spirits of Wabasha High as we tied the Randolph Rockets 6-6 in our Friday night game. Queen Mary Beth Burrichter and King Jim Abbott reigned over the festivities after their memorable coronation on Thursday. The annual homecoming dance was held Saturday night with music by the Last Draft . The theme this year was Reflections of My Life . It was very appropriate as this homecoming will be one that will be remembered for many years to come. ABOVE LEFT: Can I look now? L. TO R.: P. Schmitt, L. Sandwick, G. Kennedy, K. Caves. LEFT: All right you guys. . . kill 'em ! ABOVE: I'll never wash these hands again, Sadie Hawkins The annual staff decided to try something different to raise money that would finance this year's annual and came up with a Sadie Hawkins Dance. Instead of having just the girl ask boy procedure we came up with a few extra events, one of these being the crowning of a Lil' Abner and Daisy Mae to reign over the dance. The candidates were chosen from the freshman and sophomore classes and were voted on by placing a penny in their jar, which counted as one vote. The winners were Jane Kennebeck and Glenn Witte. Other prizes were awarded for the most original costume, sexiest costume, most complicated costume and the best dressed couple. The Stone Flour from Lacrosse proved the music for this most memorable event. ABOVE: No, this doesn't mean we're married! (N. Wod-ele and date) 12 RIGHT: Lil' Glen and Daisy Jane (G. Witte and J. Kennebeck) A t Your Service The students of WHS showed their interest in making our school a better one by their help in various areas. Office aids are found each day, busily typing away and running errands to make life a little easier for the adults. There are also a variety of students helping the cooks to serve and prepare the lunch for a hungry student body. Library assistants continue to help the librarian in the many duties involved in operating a sufficient library system. Class officers also assist the School by organizing the activities that each class participates in every year. UPPER RIGHT: A motley crew, (J. Ristau, E. Hager, B. Marx, L. This year's prom was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Rochester. A buffet-style dinner was served which was immediately followed by the crowning of the 1971 prom royalty. Mary Kay Metz and Russell Meyer reigned over the festivities as the new king and queen. Following a short program, a dance featuring the Exchange from Eau Claire, was held. The seniors would like to take the time right now to thank the junior class for all the time and effort they contributed to make this prom such a special one for all who attended. ABOVE: What do you mean I have a bug on me? (J. Marcou, J. Belter). RIGHT: J. Holtzman- My girdle is killing me! (K. Lovejoy, M. Passe, S. Meyer). When The Hungries Hit The ring of a bell is all it takes for Wabasha High's hungry students to rush to their lunches. A few changes were made in this year's noon hour schedule. A split shift of two separate eating times was designed: one for juniors and seniors and the other for freshman and sophomores. An open noon hour was also approved for those students who enjoy the outdoors for their break in the busy schedule of classes. LOWER LEFT: We're having barfaroni! (R. Mickow, D. Carrels). Where else can you catch up on the latest gossip around town? Some people even find school beneficial when trying to catch up on the sleep they missed during the weekend. The variety of classes that each student participates in gives each one of them an opportunity to meet many kids their own age that may share the same interests as they do. Yes, school has it's advantages for all, whether it be hard at work or just having fun. ABOVE: K. Beckman, D. Peters, B. Carlson packing clothes for the needy. 22 BELOW: K. Koenig and D. Mrs. Dorothy Thompson addressed the student body on the importance of service to your school and community. The Quill and Scroll contributed much to the school as well as the community by editing a page in the local newspaper on the activities around school. This years Spanish Club was very active. However, the outcome of the spring contest in St. Charles proved this statement untrue. A superior rating was received for the two numbers performed by the chorus. The glee club, composed of freshmen and sophomore girls, also worked hard this year. The efforts they showed were worthwhile as were seen in the performance they gave at the spring concert. These injuries also enabled many boys to get valuable experience which should help next years squad tremendously. The experience gained this year should help Coach Broin’s squad next year tremendously. With only four seniors leaving, there is a bright outlook for next year's squad. 43 Indians- Win!! After a very slow start, this years team roared back in tournament rounds, finally losing to Red Wing in the district finals. The team was lead by Senior Captain Keith Johnson, who captured the centenial conference race with a 19. 3 scoring average. He was supported greatly by senior Rube Schur-hammer, Juniors Jeff Noll, John Burkhardt, and Tom Kasper. For their fine play, Johnson and Burkhardt were voted to the all-conference team. As the season progressed they met the challenge and captured second place in the Centennial Conference behind Goodhue. The 1971 track season proved to be very successful. The team brought home three trophies and also placed second in the Centennial Conference. Kevin Koenig led the list of outstanding performers by placing in the sub-district in the 100 and 220. He went on to the district and regionals. Before losing out, he set a new school record. This year's golf squad compiled a 6-7 record with many close and exciting matches. Interesting and new facts are learned every year so that by the time graduation arrives, all students have accumulated quite a bit of knowledge. Besides learning facts, however, there are other things the students enjoy doing. Singing in chorus or glee club and playing an instrument in the band are two suggestions. In the winter and spring, concerts are given and contests are held. These give all music students something to look forward to. 63 ABOVE: Mrs. Domish is always willing. RIGHT: Master-Mind at work. (B. Fiedler) Math Vs. Science The many different classes of math and science enable the students at WHS to pursue the fascinating and intriguing world of the future. Research papers, projects, experiments, and complex solutions test the students' minds to their fullest. This year an electronics course was introduced. As yet, the class is still segregated; but according to Newton's law--the opposites WILL attract. 65 Business Phy-Ed The business classes of Wabasha High brought new knowledge to many of its students. Typing, bookkeeping and shorthand are some of these classes that prepare us for our future life. Being fit is important for the happiness of every person and this year's physical education classes brought it's students this fitness. The strenous exercises and cold showers are bound to wake up the laziest person. The race is on! (P. Krenz, M. Costello, M. Roemer and K. Weinrich) ■ MR. KARGER MR. ENGRAV MRS. WALLERICH MR. Elementary As high school students, we often find ourselves talking about our old grade school days. These days would never have the memories they did without the teachers that helped us through these grades. Tbe members of the Kellogg and Wabasha Elementary School faculty showed real enthusiasm this year, providing the students with memories that, they too, someday may share. Without them we wouldn't have anyone to give us food, tardy passes, bandaids or a helping hand in fixing a broken desk. Of course, were talking about the cooks, office aids, janitors, and the nurse. All the assistance you've given us is appreciated. 71 •A J. Abbott J. Ahlers T. Aitken S. Arens T. Arens B. Baker W. Baker B. Balow B. Barton C. Binner P. Blee B. Bouquet R. Braatz D. Brown J. We would like to give special thanks and recognition to our advisors Miss Hamilton and Miss Pehle, Gene's Studio for their time and effort, to our many advertisers, who made our annual possible, to John Smith, Josten's representative for his patience and understanding and to the American Yearbook Company.
