For some those today’s held expectation and for others defeat! For the seniors those today's held tire hours in which they would be starting their way to tomorrow. Years from now all these today's will be remembered and spoken about as fond yesterdays. Dear Mom And Dad . . . Nearly eighteen years ago We began to look For a way To express our thanks And appreciation To our parents For their love, patience And understanding. We now believe We have found a way to do so: We are proud To dedicate this book, The 1970 Warrior, To our moms and dads Whose help and guidance Have molded us Into the young adults We are today. Vigorous cheering and excited voices rang in the air at the bonfire which immediately followed the coronation ceremonies. These excited voices inspired the WHS Indians to a shutout victory Friday night over Elgin. A dance, sponsored by the senior class, was held Saturday night with music provided by The Ticket. Those Were the Days was the theme chosen for the Homecoming festivities of 1969-70. We will definitely remember Those Days” which were so much a part of our high school years. Marx. County Days County Days was held at the Wabasha County Court House on Monday, November 17, 1969. Elected student officials from the various Wabasha County schools attended, including our WHS students. The students spent the morning in their elected posts, where they were able to talk with and listen to the county official they represented. After the morning session they were treated to dinner at the American Legion Annex. Following the dinner, everyone reported to the court room where they saw a court case. The day proved to be an exciting and unforgettable experience for our WHS representatives. As you pass the office, you not only see adults pecking away at the typewriter, but also students busily taking attendance and performing numerous tasks for the WHS office. While eating lunch you not only see adults serving the food but student cooks also help prepare and serve the lunch. A helpful library assistant is always there to assist you in finding the various reference materials or maybe just a good book. These are the many ways WHS students perform services for the school and the student body. RIGHT: Library aids, LEFT TO RIGHT, D. Wagner, T. Aitken, C. Carrels, D. Schuhammer, R. Lien, K. Newman, J. During the course of the play, Flory uses beauty creams to erase crows feet, which she con't find, tries desperately to match up her temperamental mother (Debra Earney) with Mr. Peabody (Bob Dose). Flory thinks of Mr. Peabody as a millionaire, but he is really only a man with a strange eccentricity for flowers and plants of any kind, who lives in a small, one-room apartment. Mavy (Bonnie Wilson) and the numerous other members of the cast and crew add spice and interest to the 1969-70 Fall play. The cast and crew were extremely grateful for the assistance and direction of Mrs. Claudia Lea. The audience was kept on its toes between acts by the song and dance routines done by Nancy Meyer, Jani Palmen, and Ann Gathje. The acts were directed by Mrs. Magda Hertsfeldt. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, if you listen, you can hear the sound of seventy harmonious voices singing at the top of their lungs. As you stroll down the hallway, you can catch bits and pieces of school gossip and laughter. If you're really looking, sights of students studying are found. There are always various meetings to run to such as Student Council, Spanish Club, Totem Poll, and National Honor Society. As you go up the stairway be sure to remain alert for two things, a bell for lunch, and seniors sliding down banisters. C. Roerhrich is portraying her usual light headed spirit. 18 What juicy secret is C. Marquardt whispering in M. Quesenberry's ear? WHS Students Face It! The students from Wabasha High are made up of everything from laughter to frowns. There must be a reason for the strange and becoming faces we come up with, and there is! What is running through our minds always manages to show up in our expressions. And as you can see.. . we've learned to face it! “ Bridge Over Troubled Water” With the onset of spring weather, the young men's minds turned to fancy and the young girl's minds turned to the young men! Thus we ended up with our annual Junior-Senior Prom. In a beautiful setting of Bridge Over Troubled Water, our 1970 prom king and queen were crowned. Debbie Stroot and Mike Hoffman reigned jubilantly over a marvelous night of dancing. The juniors worked hard to make this prom exciting and fun for everyone. The Seniors wish to thank the Juniors for making this year's prom one to remember forever. The envelope please . . . 22 RIGHT: I hope we can get this done by tomorrow night, Jane! (M. Metz and J. Rivers) ABOVE: I hope this will stay on. ABOVE CENTER: What's going on over there? Spring Fever Strikes Again Spring has arrived! Once again this year, students had to sit in their desks and melt while the sun streamed through the windows. Students of any size, shape, and color could be seen at any time of the school day gazing dreamily out side while the warm weather persisted. However, we did have our share of bleakness and stormy weather. Sometimes, many times in fact, the weather matched the varied moods of the students of WHS. UPPER RIGHT AND ABOVE: Tragic memories of 1970 show the remains that the fire left us. Each WHS student resigned himself to accept the burnt hallways for the remainder of the school year. BELOW: R. S. students are as varied as their personalities. We can see the intense concentration of one student as he studies; the group fun and involvement of juniors as they try to sell their candy and popcorn at games. As the seniors are listening to a lecture in English, their attention is interrupted by the pounding of the senior carpentry boys, building a garage for the school, outside their window. If we're not found doing some sort of work, we're found being just plain old nutty. ABOVE: J. Rivers, M. Metz, D. Albrecht support the Jr. Class fund by selling pop corn at a football game. LEFT: Mr. Hanson and the St. Carpentry class lay foundation of new garage. 27 ATHLETICS Indians Take Crown Undefeated The 1969-70 Wabasha Indians downed their second undefeated season and gained their second Centennial Conference Crown in this year's football action. A hard hitting defense held the opposition to an average of 4. 4 points a game. The potent offense produced an average of 28. 2 points per games. Coach Karger attributed the teams success to hard hitting and teamwork. The Indians offensive and defensive players, of which seventeen are seniors, formed a great team that had what it took to make champs. FRONT ROW—J. Bouquet, M. Kasper, R. Collister, G. Glomski, D. All together 50 boys took part in the program, the championship game was used as a hind raising project. Again this year the letterman sponsored Dad's Night, during halftime of the Wabasha vs. Goodhue football game. The parents of the varsity football players were introduced during halftime. Also, during home basketball games the lettermen donated their time serving as ushers. The 1969-70 WHS school year initiated many new organizations, one of them being the Spanish Club. During the course of this school year many interesting projects were carried out including a Christmas program, a Christmas party, and a discussion with students from Chile. The Norvan Johnson Chapter of the Quill and Scroll club was initiated this year by senior English teacher, Mrs. Nadine Carr. The purpose of the club was to encourage creative writing among its members. The club put out an excellent literary magazine called the STILETTO in the spring of the year. The American Legion donated flags to replace those which had faded or were torn in the school building. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by President Deborah Stroot every Monday morning over the intercom. The NHS hopes that through their efforts WHS students will become more aware of our flag and our country. Everyone has creative talent and some people have it in art. This year a new club was formed for those who were creative and also for those who were just curious and wanted to find out what art was all about. Under the advisorship of Mrs. Annette Huntoon the Art Club did many crafty tilings, but one of the most fun and rewarding was painting Christmas scenes on the Super Value windows at Christmas time. The 1969-70 WHS Student Council this year again sent Christmas presents to our boys in Viet Nam. The Student Council sponsored a teen dance to earn money for a possible foreign exchange program, also die Student Council arranged the annual Christmas program and promoted school spirit and interest. During the school year Mrs. Hertzfeldt took the girls' glee club and boys' chorus on many worthwhile excursions. FTA — FNA“To Learn Is To Serve.” Among the organizations that have been incorporated into the school is the Future Teachers Association, which has been very active all year. Beside student teaching, the club sold light bulbs, participated in a Fall Workshop, Leadership Conference, a Student Exchange Program, and a State Convention where Kathy Beckman was elected to the State Executive Board. Janet Freiermuth was president of the Future Nurses Association this year. The club was formed to help girls inter -ested in nursing become more informed in the field of nursing. By selling candy and doing other numerous fund raising activities the girls in FNA were able to buy nurses' pins. A goal set and reached. FNA meets to plan trip to Mayo Clinic. J. English, Spanish II, And Speech — The Art Of Learning Each teacher has their own unique approach to English. It’s usually a balance between literature, creative writing, and grammar. Book reports, themes, sentence structure, Hemingway -- this is English! The Spanish Department took a giant step this year by instigating a Spanish III class along with the Spanish I and II. Spanish III teaches customs and history of Spanish speaking countries. If you want to learn to do something new and different speech class is the place to learn. Two plus two still equals four even though our math becomes more complex everyday. Masses of students tried each day to figure their way through countless formulas and geometric patterns. For some kids there were many mistakes but there was always something to be learned. Being able to distinguish NAD+ from NHDH+H+ is a true art. But it is only learned through a very tedious process of learning how to distinguish an enzyme from a hormone. In our science courses this year we were brought a little closer to understanding how our bodies' really do work. RIGHT: This may surprise us all! (Mr. Fiedler, K. Gosse, and N. These history courses are supposed to give us a chance to learn by other men's mistakes and misfortunes. In this way we will give our world another chance. Music can be enjoyed by all. The music department at WHS this year tryed to appeal to all sorts of tastes by playing a variety of music--jazz, classical and, of course, contemporary. This year was truly dedicated to music. 68 ABOVE: Mr. Nelson and Mr. Loretz discuss a possible change in history curriculum. RIGHT: How would you like to ride in MY beautiful balloon? Mr. Nelson MR. Art, Home Ec And Shop — Fun With A Purpose The year of 1969-70 set a new era for Home Economics at WHS. The boys met the girls to learn the essentials of planning a well balanced meal and how to run an efficient home. Now the only worry the future holds is what will happen when boy meets girl in the kitchen? With a little bit of luck and some encouraging words from Mrs. Huntoon the Art I and II classes of WHS used all the orig-nality and skill they possessed to put The Mona Lisa to shame. Many students were very talented and their works display their fine talents. Others of us are not so gifted but we all have a good time trying and as the old saying goes, We can't all be another Leonardo de Vinci, can we! r % The Industrial Arts department used their skills in carpentry to contribute their part to WHS. The boys built a garage during the school year. Although the garage may not be an Empire State Building, it is well constructed and solid in appearance. Business And Phy-Ed New Challenges The business courses at WHS offer knowledge for everyday purposes. Most people don't know the first thing about shorthand, or wouldn't be able to solve bookkeeping problems without the aid of a competant business class. A typing skill could never be developed with just a typewriter. A helpful aid is needed to put a clumsy finger on the right key and keep a letter centered. We learn all this and have fun in a WHS business course. Heads, shoulders, knees and toes”. Who can ever forget those wonderful Physical Education classes? Yes those were the days of the strenuous exercises, baby blue bloomers, miracle white shorts, and of course, those cold refreshing showers, and speeding to class with soggy hair. This strenuous routine developed a crew of physically fit WHS students. ABOVE: Gee my fingers are getting sore, says Mary 72 Kay Popp. FRONT ROW: SITTING LEFT TO RIGHT. . . One of the big events every year is the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme for the 1970 Prom was Bridge Over Troubled Water. Some of the other events of the year were the ordering of class rings, operating the concession stand at all home games, selling homecoming buttons and sponsoring the Valentine's Day Dance. With all the memories of this exciting year behind them they are more than willing to enter their final year at Wabasha High. During the course of the year the Seniors tried to make their last year in high school a great one. We began the year by sponsoring a smashing Homecoming and ended the year by meeting at the Sheraton Hotel in Rochester for a banquet, which was followed by a free day” when everybody went their own way looking for some wholesome fun. Before we all met for the last time on graduation night a baccalaureate was held which inspired us to do good in whatever we pursued.
