They have been selected by their teachers on the basis of leadership, capability, industry, scholarship, etc. Congratulations to the outstanding students of 61J We would also like to give special recognition to Andres Marillo who came to the U.S. from the Philippine Islands last year, and who has been a fellow student at W.H.S. This year's Indians posted their most successful football campaign recorc in the last 14 years, losing only one game. The team showed a great desire to win and displayed a lot of team spirit. While running an improved single-win; offense, the line and backfield worked well together. Next year's team will be without the services of senior lettermen Leonari Rollins, Jim Webb, John Boots, Bill Loechler, Terry O'Brien, Ralph Van Houten, Gary Hager, Ron Sylvester, and John Hess. However, there are many promising,] young members coming up who should give us a solid team in the next few years, TEAM CAPTAINS Bill Leochler, John Boots, Terry O'Brien 34 Wabasha SEASON RECORD Opponent 14 12 Lima 0 32 Lewiston 33 0 Mazeppa 7 7 Elgin 34 13 Dover-Eyota 32 8 Alma 38 0 Randolph 35 BASKETBALL Back Row: Coach Nelson, T.O'Brien, G.Hager, J.Webb, J.Gillmore. During the regular season the squad built a record of 12 wins and 3 losses but could now wrench the conference title from Goodhue who was undefeated in conference play. Wabasha finished in second place in the conference with its only losses coming at the hands of Goodhue. Wabasha was led by four seniors; Gary Hager, Dan Larson, Terry O'Brien, Jim Webb and junior; Jon Gillmore. Backing these boys up were juniors; Leroy Ekstrand, Jim Concidine, Fred Meurer, Dave Jones, and freshman;Jim Glynn. Two Wabasha boys, Gary Hager and Jon Gillmore were selected to the Centennial All-Conference squad and received certificates from the Winona Daily News for this honor. Jim Webb and Dan Larson were elected co-captains for the season. 36 GARY HAGER FORWARD ALL-CONFERENCE SEASON RECORD JON GILLMORE GUARD ALL-CONFERENCE ♦Conference Teams Wabasha Opponent 65 56 Lima Sacred Heart 29 36 Goodhue 57 44 Elgin 55 52 Pepin 57 40 Randolph 70 46 Mazeppa 53 50 Faribault Deaf 63 42 Eyota • 43 49 Goodhue 66 41 Elgin 49 35 Randolph 69 49 Mazeppa 56 60 Lewiston 62 51 Faribault Deaf 76 36 Eyota Sub-District Play-offs: Wabasha 45 Lewiston 62 TERRY O'BRIEN GUARD DAN LARSON FORWARD CO-CAPTAIN JIM WEBB FORWARD CO-CAPTAIN 37 B TEAM Left to Right, Back Row: D.Burnett, J.Hager, B.Pfeisticker, D.Wilcox, S.Taverna, Coach Meschke. Wabasha High's track squad enjoyed a successfull season highlighted by the placing of three individuals and the mile relay team in the district meet. This gave the team enough points to place 5th in the district. The big disappointment to the track squad came in the conference meet when the Faribault Deaf squad edged them out for the conference title 76 points to 74% points. The effort of each individual in the meet was great as each wanted to help Wabasha take the conference title. But fate, in the form of an inch or a second, was not there to smile upon us. In the conference Wabasha has the distinction of holding several records. Jim Webb has the broad jump record at 18'10 3 4 Terry O'Brien, the record in the 880 yd. run at 2:12.9; Dan Larson, the record in the high hurdles at 18.2 seconds; Leroy Ekstrand, the record in the low hurdles at 23.3 seconds; and the mile relay record at 3:52. The relay team was composed of Leroy Ekstrand, Terry O'Brien, Jon Gillmore, and Bill Loechler. In the district, Bill Loechler placed third in the 440 yd. run, Jim Webb third in the broad jump, the mile relay team placed fifth, and Terry O'Brien was first in the 880 yd. run. Terry then moved on to the regional meet where he placed 6th against strong competition. 40 Right: Mile Relay Team John Boots, Bill Loechler, Jon Gillmore, skeeter Ekstrand Below: Low Hurdlers Skeeter Ekstrand, Jon Gillmore Above: 440 Yard Dash Bill Loechler Right: High Hurdlers John Hess, Dan Larson 41 BASEBALL Left to Right, Back Row: Coach Nelson, D.Burnett, D.Wilcox, J.Gillmore, T.O'Brien, W.Hughley, J.Concidine, j.Ekstrand, C.Herraundson. The baseball team, composed largely of juniors and sophomores, compiled a mediocre season record of 3 wins and 4 losses. The desire of these youngsters, however, seems to promise better teams for the coming years.
