Rud is a native of Portland, North Dakota. Graduating from North Dakota State University with a Bache- lor of Science, he received his commission in May 1967 and earned his Wings of Gold in Dec. 1968 at Beeville, Tx. His first assignment was flying the A-4 with the Black Dia- monds of VA-216 at NAS Alameda, California. Completing his tour with Va-216, Captain Rud transitioned to the A-7 and reported to the Va-215 Barn Owls for a combat deployment to Southeast Asia on board USS ORISKANY QCV-343. In January 1972, Captain Rud reported to VA-122 as an In- structor and LSO. He then joined CVW-14 as the Wing LSO for the first deployment of the F-14 in November 1974. He was also named Assistant Operations Officer for VA-97 and partici- pated in the evacuation of Saigon. In February 1977, Captain Rud reported to the Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, Tx as the Officer Program Director for the South Texas area. Following this tour, Captain Rud attend- ed the Armed Forces Staff College. In November 1985, Captain Rud became the Commanding Offi- cer and Flight Leader of the Navy Flight Demonstration Squad- ron. As Blue Angel Number One, he was responsible for transi- tioning the squadron from the A-4 Skyhawk to the FfA 18 Hornet. Captain Rud has accumulated more than 5600 flight hours and 775 carrier landings. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, five StrikefFlight Air Medals, and the Navy Commendation Medal and numerous other unit and service awards. Captain Rud is married to the former Barbara Carroll of Mont- gomery, Louisiana. They have three childreng Valerie, a 21 year old senior attending Virginia Tech University, Ryan 17 and Sally 12.
