After crossing the Santa Rita River Bridge Qas it is less commonly knownj, you are treated to a variety of colors and sounds. Banners fly everywhere greeting you to their country and inviting to buy something . The men, women, and even the children would barrage you with hats, sunglasses, and a vast number of other items to buy. The bars and nightclubs cater every musical interest, from country to rock n' roll. You could actually sit in a bar and enjoy yourself without any hassles, but you did have to be aware of a hand pounding on your leg and a whisper, buy me a drink . The outskirts of Olongapo City was a get away, we were able to see the beautiful country-side that the Philippines has to offer. It is truly a wonder- ful countryg full of beautiful sights, wonderful people and a proud past. This word conjures up images of lazy afternoons on the sunswept beaches, swimming in the warm water off the gulf of Thailand and taking part in the action packed nightlife of Pattaya Beach. Thailand is high on the list of the most memorable ports that the Wabash had the opportunity to visit. This resort island offers a unique liberty experience to sailors and vacation- ers alike. When liberty call' was heard over the 1 mc., many sailors stormed off the brow onto the sandy beach to be met by a huge carnival-like atmo- sphere. Pattaya Beach has a host of restaurants, open bars, and various stores selling everything from diving equipment to gold baht. The nightclubs offer exotic entertainment including a fast and furious sport known as kick- boxing and many other eye-catching shows which made Thailand an unforgettable port for all. The five days we visited was not nearly enough to explore the interesting country life Thailand has offer. Many of us though had the opportunity to take in some of the tours available to Bangkok and the River Kwai. To many, Thailand was the port that made WEST PAC 90' worth every hour spent out at sea. - J , 117' 4 M55 'W' 5 2 ihirf VN IHILLIIIS lmuglml Mmm vulln has Vliilllliiys Doug and a good friend. - V , . The CANNONBALL visits the conti- nent, which is famous among money things. For its marsupials most notably the Koala and the Kangaroos. Australia is also known for its great beaches and vast outback. After 56 days out to sea and three paychecks to save up, USS WABASH moored for a well deserved six days visit. We visit Perth! Freemantle of Western Australia that had the distinction of being in a group of cities, born from a British Penal colony rather, in 1829 a group of British individuals settle here to establish a self-governing body known as the Swan River colony. Today, Perthflfreemantle is home to one of the largest con- centration of people next to Sydney. The people are warm, caring and will even invite you over to eat dinner over their house. The weather isn't so bad either while we're there enjoying ourselves in the sun and away from the water for a change. Therefore, if you ever have the chance to visit any country in the world. Our loved ones bid us a safe farewell and hope that we will have a quick return. We say our GOOD-BYI-IS with heavy and misty eyes and take that one last look that will be remembered in our hearts fdr six s. long month The women we left behind dread our departure, but they know that it is necessary and it is indeed our responsibility. They try not to think about what's ahead for them, but must immediately face long days on their own just as the ship departs the pier. The women left behind are the walls of strength that hold our families together while we are gone. After a time at sea, the reality of waking up and not seeing our spouse's lovely face begins to set ing the days drag on and on and calendars begin to cover the bulkheads, all pointing to the last day of our separation. We are comforted with letters and phone calls, but nothing seems to fill the void we feel inside. Although it seems that WESTPAC 90 went on forever, it was mooring to the pier that took longer, for no more than forty yards away were our best friends, the women we left behind.
