EXECUTIVE OFFICER Robert S. Black LCDR, USN X This 1974 deployment to the Western Pacific represented the culmination of months of planning, preparation, training and hard work. Closer to the day of departure, WABASH was fully occupied with liquid-cargo loading, stores loading, ammunition loading and more hard work. By the time WABASH arrived in Japan, the ship and crew were fully prepared to carry out their assigned mission and stand up to the careful scrutiny of visiting flag officers. This was proven over and over again through a series of 162 underway replenishments of: fuel, stores, food stuffs andfor ammunition --- all transferred without serious personnel injury or disabling material casualty. These seven months proved to be a time of exceptionally high advancement for the crew as a result of superior scores on the Navy-wide advancement ex- aminations. The level of Preventive the Personnel Qualification Standards were implemented whole-heartedly --- all indications of extensive individual and collective hard work. The many successes enjoyed and accolades received by WABASH and her crew epitomized the special sense of pride inherent in striving toward the goal of cooperative teamwork in an atmosphere of equal opportunity for ally and, more importantly, they justly rewarded all the hours of hard work.
