The school children went home to their parents and told them the name. Everyone approved, and they began calling the com- munity Pleasant Grove. Pleasant beginnings The roots of Pleasant Grove reach deep into the early 1800's, establishing it as one of the oldest communities in Dallas. Several families in- cluding the Elams, Brutons, Conners, Umphresses, and Blairs contributed to the early settlement. Charlie Blair, a senior, felt very proud to be a descendant of one of the pioneering families. The land that Samuell stands on was 6 Beginnings once a part of the Blair three hundred and sixteen acre tract. He said, lt also gives me a sense of roots to know my fami- ly has stayed here all these years. What the future holds for me and my descendants, however, remains unknown. Dan Lebow, the first teacher in the little one-room schoolhouse, gave Pleasant Grove its name. One day he was gazing out the window and ex- Joel Ballew strikes up the band at the SOC game.

Misty Collins checks out a book on Greek mythology at the library. Pleasant living Living in Pleasant Grove was a special experience. Senior Eddie Busch commented, I have lived here all my life, and I like the Grove. Tammy Daven- port thought living in Pleasant Grove was better than living in Highland Park. Living in Pleasant Grove en- titled many high -school students to have the opportuni- ty to attend W. W. Samuell. 8 Beginnings . . 5-mul.,-3.65 IL 1 f Q3-6 l Laura Woody, Melissa Contreras, and Shane Knight trim the tree with holiday spirit. Eighty-nine percent of those who attended Samuell actually resided in the Pleasant Grove area. At Samuell, the Spartans became members of the French Club, drill team, allied youth, cheerleading squad, and stu- dent council. These organiza- tions, along with others, helped the Spartans enjoy going to Samuell and living in the Grove. Joseph Proctor gives a report on diapers in child development.
