New rules and regulations brought about some changes for the 1984 school year. One of the major changes was the attendance policy. This year, students were allowed five absences, excused or unexcused. Six days led to an automatic failure. Three tardies were considered as one absence. Passes were a must in the hall. Adding to the changes .were a new principal, Mr. Rollings, and a new Dean of Instruction, Dr. Baca The lengthening of the school day until four p.m. brought about other changes. Itallowed students to take an extra academic class, and it also provided some students with a study hall. After school meetings and practices could not begin until four-fifteen p.m. Students and faculty, tired from that extra hour, adjusted to the change in about six weeks. For the first time in years, every course at Samuell was on grade level. The phase elective program gave way to traditional English, and academic emphasis English and math courses were added to the curriculum to provide students with the extra help that they needed. ut' M31 it S it W y if 1 g r . Ms. Adam's AE English is a challenge for John Lozano. - Pam Hickman holds her tongue when she is late to in dustrial art. Samuell provided a variety of organizations and sports which in- spired participation and appealed to all types of students. Spartans showed their spirit by belonging to Blue Jackets, and the deaf pep club. Athletes competed in such sports as volleyball, golf, tennis, soccer, basketball, and football. The tedious hours, dedication and striving for perfection of each team or organizations proved what being a Spartan really was. Beginnings 9 1'
