At each of the ten games, the Samuell football team was supported by a packed crowd of Spar- tan fans. By losing four of the first five games of the season, the Spartans got off to a questiona- ble start. But the question mark became an exclamation point during the remainder of the season because the Spartans, won each of the remaining five games. Head coach Billy Russell and his assistant coaches guided the Spartans to a 6-4 season, the most successful Samuell has enjoyed since l970. Five Samuell footballers gained All-Dis- trictsrecognition. Phillip Timpa tackled a spot on the first team defensive lineg Reggie Richardson blocked out a path to the second team offensive lineg Marcus Vickers caught the tight-end position on the second teamg Donald Kelly rushed his way to the second team offensive backfieldg and David Chan- dler was named sophomore of the year in the district. Coach Russell was recognized as one of the top coaches in the city after being named coach of the year in the district. Phillip Timpa recovered a fumble in the first period, but the Spartans failed to score. ln the fourth quarter, the Spartan defense gave Samuell fans hope with its third fumble recovery, this one at the Skeeter 37 yard line. After a 4th and 8 pass from quarter- back Richard Allen to tight-end Marcus Vickers, the Spar- tan offense had advanced to the 3 yard line, only 9 feet from the first Spartan touchdown of the season. Running back Donald Kelly scored the touchdown with a 3 yard plunge, and Danny Trent caught a 2-point conversion pass from Allen to end the scoring. After the game, Coach Bill Degan commented, We feel that our team performed well even though we came out on the short end of the score. We made a few mental errors that were costly. lf we can stay healthy and retain the good attitudes shown, the Spartans will surprise a lot of people this year. Samuell Takes First In Closing Seconds 4 It took the Spartans about a minute to win their first game of the year. The victims of the clock at Pleasant Grove Stadium were the Roosevelt Mustangs, losing 8 to 7. With close to a minute to play, the Mustangs had the ball at the Samuell 3-yard line and also a 7 to 0 lead. The stands were slowly emptying, and the Samuell defense stopped the Mustangs in four plays. A few fans remained, but most had given up hope. With less than a minute on the clock, the Spartan offense needed 98 yards and some miracles to win. It wasn't a miracle, instead it was good officiating, but the Spartans got a break. An official charged Roosevelt with pass interference and gave Samuell the ball in Mustang territory. As the clock ticked slowly, Richard Allen rolled back to pass and threw 25 yards to tight end Joseph Crawford and 6 points. Allen also hit Marcus Vickers for the 2 point conversion. 122. . .athletics Patriots Escape Defensive Plow Samuell scored first at Loos Field against the Thomas Jefferson Patri- ots. but T.J. scored last and won the game l4 to 7 in the district opener. Richard Allen hit flanker Donald Allen for a 58-yard scoring pass and Kevin Lawless booted the extra point to give Samuell a 7 to 0 lead. The Pats came back to tie the game late in the second period and also had a chance to take the lead from the Samuell 5 yard line. but the Spar- tan defense became a dam and stopped the T.J. flow in 4 plays. The second half was scoreless until the final minute and a half. The Patriots scored on a 33-yard run up the middle of the Spartan defense. Panthers Sneak By Spartan Sword For the second time in as many weeks. the Samuell Spartans dropped a heartbreaker. this time to the Hillcrest Panthers at Pleasant Grove Field. Leading 7 to 0 all of the first half. and threatening to put the game away late in the second quarter. the Spartans were stung for two second-half scores as Hillcrest pulled out the come- back victory l3 to 7. Donald Kelly dove one yard for the Spartans' only touch- down. and Kevin Lawless uprighted the extra point. The Panthers took advantage of a Spartan fumble and soon tied the game. Hillcrest scored again in the 4th period on a 25 yard touchdown pass. but the extra point attempt failed. athletics. . .l23 Spartans Suffer Final Loss To White David Chandler kicked a 33-yard field goal to give the Spartans their only score in a l3 to 3 district loss to the W. T. White Longhorns at Loos Field. White held a tight 7 to 3 lead through the first 3 periods of the contest. Penalties and turnovers haunted the Spar- tans through the entire game. A 42-yard touchdown pass with 9 minutes remaining in the game put the Spartans in a hopeless position. as the Longhorns handed the Spartans their third district loss. Raiders Get Ambushed Donald Kelly carried the ball 25 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns. leading the Spartans to a surprise attack victory over the Skyline Raiders. Shutting out the Raiders was supposed to be as tough as riding a hike up Pikes Peak. but the Spartan defense controlled the game. by utilizing a strong secondary and holding the Raider ground attack to a minimum. After the Spartan defense converged on the Raider punter before he could get the kick away. the Spartan offense took pos- session at the Raider 38. In ten plays the Spartans drove to the Raider two yard line and Donald Kelly scored his first touch- down of the night. The final touchdown of the game came in the third quarter. The Spartan offense was caught in a crowded elevator a fourth and one situation from the Raider 34. Donald Kelly guided the elevator smoothly to the ground floor with a 34-yard touch- down jaunt. 124. . .athletics Tigers Get Lost In Spartans Jungle Coming off a I4 to 0 upset victory over rival Skyline, the Samuell Spartans easily defeated the Lincoln Tigers 36 to 12. The game was plagued by fumbles, interceptions, and over 200 yards in penalties, but the Spartan offense came alive to put up their highest point total of the year. Davey Beard, Buddy Juice,' Fuller, and Donald Kelly each scored once, while Richard Allen reached paydirt twice as the Spartans racked up 350 yards total offense. Ray Ellason, Kevin Lawless, and David Chandler each kicked at least one extra point, while the Tigers failed to convert the extra points after both of their touchdowns. I Spartan Fans Relieved By 3-Yard Plunge h When the Spartans wrestled with the Wildcats of Woodrow Wilson, the outcome of the game was not decided until the final alf minute. The Wildcats scored twice in the first half, both on long touchdown passes. However, both extra point attempts failed. Donald Kelly got the first score for the Spartans on a one yard dive. Samuell got another score stemming from an outstanding defensive play by Mike Long. Long blocked a Wildcat punt, which resulted in a safety against Woodrow. The Wildcats held the lead 12 to 9 until the final moments of the game. The Spartans put together a quick drive, highlighted by five Richard Allen to Marcus Vickers passes for 37 yards. With 28 seconds remaining in the game, Donald Kelly eased the stomach and heart muscles of every Spartan fan by scoring from three yards out to give the Spartans a 15 to I2 victory. athletics. . .125 lg at Even though the Spartans' I9-14 homecoming victory over the Bryan Adams Cougars was a team effort. Donald Kelly still managed to be the most outstanding player. rushing for l28 yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars scored in their first possession of the game and held a temporary 7 to O lead. Mike Long pounced on a loose football at the Cougar 30 yard line to give the Spartan offense an easy scoring opportunity. Kelly s number was dialed and he answered with a 26 yard touchdown run. Another aggressive defensive play gave the Spartans great field position. Greg Boyd recovered a Cougar bobble in Cougar territory. On a fourth down situation. the Spartans awoke the napping Cougars with a IO yard scoring pass from Richard Allen to Marcus Vickers. The Cougars still fought back as running back Kevin Woolridge raced 58 yards before Mike Bryant made a touchdown saving tackle. The Cougars scored quickly and held a 14 to I3 lead. ln the third quarter. Richard Allen engineered a 78 yard scoring drive, using Kelly as his blueprint. Kelly carried the ball I6 times before he scored from 2 yards out for the final score of the game. Arrows y Reverse Cn Apaches By scoring 22 points in the first half. the Spartans defeated the Spruce Apaches 22-l7. concluding the season with a five game winning streak. Without the services of Donald Kelly, the Spartan rushing game was still the team's strong point, totaling 280 yards on the ground. Leading rushers were Buddy Fuller. l25 yards. and John Price, 85 yards. Price scored the first touchdown of the game on a one yard plunge. A slippery-handed Apache lost the football and Mike Long recovered for the Spartans at the Spruce 39 yard line. Richard Allen threw a long scoring pass to Ricky Walters, who had eas- ily beaten the Spruce secondary. Again the Spartan defense was the key to a score. This time Greg Boyd wrapped his body around a lonely football in Apache territory. Richard Allen scored the final touchdown of the year for the Spartans on a one yard sneak. .. after a 5 year slump l26. . .athletics B-Team Football WV lyejwx A me-N28 ae. Three wins, four losses, and two ties will be put into the record book for 1975. The defense showed great promises as the season started by holding its opponents to no more than a touchdown a game. But as the season wore on, so did the defense. In the last few games the defense fell apart giving up easy touchdowns. V ' f . ' . The offense stalled at the start of the season by being almost i H unable to score at any time. They generated themselves and began to rack up points. Just as the offense began to jell, the Q gf?
