I0 QV Spanish Club vs. French Club in the Powder Puff Football Game Emily Popplewell and Charolette Metcalf led their respective teams to a tie in the annual Spanish-French football game. Claudia Weeks ran 80 yards for the only French touchdown. Charolette Metcalf ran 10 yards for the only Spanish touchdown. It must have been a defensive battle. There were three different presentations in the program, per- formed by Miss Bradenis third period speech class. The year has been full of wonderful things, but there have been some pretty disillusioning things too. Our football team surprised everyone and won the District 11-AAAA football title,'only to lose city to Woodrow. Because of our winning tradition, we were privileged to have many pep-rallies in all sports. Some students didn't consider it a privilege for they often destroyed pep-rallies, as well as other assemblies, with their childish actions. The leaders of 1970 have been fine ones for the most part, but there are always some who want to be led in the wrong way. As the class of '70 we are the last graduating seniors to vote on the leaders for next year. We appreciate being able to help, even if we won't see the candidate or nominee in action next year. We're glad to have been a part of Samuell, making it better. Unfinished goals are only a bit of what we leave behind. After twelve years of hard work, it really is a joy to gradu- ate, even if it does mean leaving old friends. It is a sad realization that many of our present classmates will go their separate ways and we'll never see them again. The class of '70 will never again reassemble as it has the past year in the halls of Samuell. Some of our class will have a bright future, while drugs will ruin others' futures. Many of the '70 graduates will have clear, well-developed minids through hard work in universities or vocations. Others from Samuell will have a future built only on the ashes of colleges they have destroyed. The decade ahead holds happiness and fulfillment or disappointment and failure for those who face it. Future attitudes are determined by high school attitudes. The Spartans did not score until the second quarter, Hubert Culp scrambling 4 yards for the score. The second score came on a 77-yard bomb from Culp to end Keith Ross and made the half-time score 13-6. The second half was a defensive battle until halfback Eddie Cervantes sped 47 yards with a Hillcrest punt to put the game out of reach. On the second play from scrimmage it looked like a beautiful evening for football. But Garland's defense proved too hot to handle, rolling past the Spartans, 24-14. The only Spartan scores came on a',69-yard TD bomb from quarterback Mike Scott to Keith Ross, and a two-yard run by Hubert Culp after a 62-yard drive in the fourth quarter. Less than a minute later, George Theilen recovered a Bison fumble and one play later, Scott sped 49 yards for the second Spartan score. Joe Timpa scored first on a 2-yard run over right tackle. Steve Patterson then scored twice on runs of 13 and 14 yards. Patterson scored again in the second quarter on a 53-yard interception return. Mike Scott's 24-yard field goal made the half-time score, 30-0. It gave Samuell sole possession of first place in the district and TJ. dropped to second. The Spartan defense made the breaks and the offense capitalized on them, as two fumble recoveries were turned into points. The first fumble was recovered by George Thielen. Mike Scott picked up 16 yards on two plays and Joe Timpa carried it over from the one for the score. The second fumble was recovered by Bill Lane. The score came six plays later on a pass from Scott, who completed three of seven for 147 yards, to Keith Ross, the play covering 64 yards. The final Spartan score came on a 48-yard punt return by Eddie Cervantes, who was hit as he fielded the ball, but shook the tackle and broke along the left sideline for the touchdown. T roy Taken Madison's Trojans became the fourth team of the season to score no points against the Spartan as Samuell won going away, 31-0. Samuellis first score covered 35 yards in 3 plays. Doug Bynum scored from the 5 and Mike Scott made the score 7-0. The next score started on the Samuell 19 and took 13 plays, Scott scoring from the 3 and making the score 14-0. The last score of the half covered 53 yards on a Scott-to-Keith Ross pass. Samuell led 21-0. There was no scoring in the third period, but on the first down of the fourth, Madison punted and Eddie Cervantes took the ball into the end-zone, making the score 28-0. ' am ' Tiger-paws tNot Enough ln a game that was a defensive battle down to the line, the Samuell Spartans held out till the final gun to wrestle victory from the hands of Lincoln's Tigers. The Spartans scored in the quarter after a 33-yard pass from quarterback Mike Scott to Steve Patterson set up the 3-yard TD run by Doug Bynam. The PAT failed and Samuell led 6-0. But Lincoln came right and scored on Joe Pouncy's 81-yard jaunt up the right sideline. Lincoln's PAT failed also, making the score 6-6. After trading punts for some time, Lincoln's kicker fumbled the snap and the ball was kicked into the center of the line. Samuell recovered, and two plays later Mike Scott ran two yards for the score. The point-after was good and Samuell led 13-6. But the game was far from over. With less than a minute to play, Lincoln's Gene Pouncy leaped high in the end-zone and captured what could have been the tying points. As he fell toward paydirt, Steve Patterson hit him and drove him out of the end-zone, thus preserving the Spartan victory. l9l Samuell Captures Zone Samuell's Spartans will now meet Woodrow Wilson for the bi-district title, with the win over W. T. White crowning Samuell as 11-AAAA champs. The Longhorns were completely defeated by a score of 27-0. Samuellis first score came after a Longhorn fumble was recovered by tackle Cliff McClellan. Mike Scott tossed a 13-yard pass to Steve Patterson for the score. The extra point attempt failed and the Spartans led 6-0. Doug Bynam then climaxed an 8-play drive, which began on the Spartan 36, with a 17-yard TD run. Later in the third period, Bynam blasted over from the 1, after a pass interception on the Samuell 36. The Spartans last touchdown took just eight plays, after stopping a White drive at the Spartan 33. Aided by a Scott to Keith Ross pass, covering 33 yards, Scott dove over from the one for the score. BA. Streak Stopped Bryan Adams lost the first game against Samuell in four years by a score of 16-13. B.A. scored first with 17 seconds left in the first half, but Samuell came back and scored on a drive of 70 yards at the 'beginning of the third quarter. After an exchange of punts, Bill Lane intercepted and was brought down at the B.A. 45 from where Doug Bynam scored after six plays. B.A. then scored again in the fourth quarter, but l the extra point attempt was blocked, and Samuell still 1 led 14-13. B.A. recovered their onside kick but Steve Patter- son intercepted with 4:16 left in the game. Samuell drove to the B.A. 8 but gave up the ball on downs. In a desperate attempt to win the game, quarterback Steve Ritchey dropped back to pass with four seconds left in the game. He was tackled in the end zone for a safety as the game ended by Harlan Tiffee and George Theilen. ,1 Samuell Loses to Mistakes The Samuell Spartans ended the regular season as champions of District ll-AAAA and played the Wood- row Wilson Wildcats for the bi-district championship, losing 21-7 to close out the season. Woodrow scored first, driving 54 yards in 9 plays, John Paul M-:Crumbly diving over from the one for the score. The game then became one of fumbles and pass interceptions until the third quarter when Mark Isom intercepted on the Samuell 34 from where Woodrow scored in 9 plays. Samuell regained the ball late in the third quarter and drove from the 33 for their only score. Hubert Culp passed to Mike Scott who raced to Woodrow's 32. Scott then passed to Steve Patterson at the 11 yard- line. Culp connected with Patterson'who went in for the score. Woodrow scored again in the fourth period from the Samuell 44- to make the score 21-7. Col. Louis D. Wittkower Cdt. Col. Bruce A. Hill This year we have had an outstanding class of Senior cadets, who have provided exceptional leadership for the Corps. This year has been a busy and fruitful year for us. The year started with the annual Rifle Marks- manship qualification firing at the Elm Fork Rifle Range. Many earned Army marksmanship badges. In the North Zone Rifle and Drill Team competition, Samuell Teams placed high. Our Field Trip to Houston and the Gulf Coast Rifle and Drill Team Competition was educational as well as enjoyable. The group visited the San Jacinto Battlefield and the Battleship Texas as well as the Astrodome. In our Federal Inspection we came out in the top schools and earned our Honor Star for the ninth straight year. Our Military Ball was a social success and enjoyed by the Corps and their guests. The Rifle Team qualified for the National Indoor Matches which places them in the top 100 teams in the nation. Coy Jordan earned the title of Marksman of the Year. In the Dallas High Schools ROTC Field Day, our team was third among the Dallas schools, and Michael Nielsen won third place in the Individual Drill. Bruce Hill won an award from the Reserve Officers Association as the Outstanding Cadet and the Sons of the American Revolution Medal of Honor. Larry Harred won the American Legion Military Excellence Award.
