7 W. Tresper Clarke High School Westbury, New York Dear Classmates, Scope ’87 represents a colla- borative effort. It was the inten- tion of the staff to provide for you a testimony of your presence at Clarke; its major focus is on your senior year. It was a pleasure to lead this joint effort and to offer you what we considered to be our best work. Very often a yearbook takes on more significance in the future as it serves to jar memory. As such, a yearbook is an historical docu- ment. We hope that Scope ’87 will be useful for this purpose as well. It is my wish that the years ahead offer the challenges and rewards that you seek and that a great measure of happiness will be yours. Sincerely, J; __J jjJ Gary Sebel Edi tor-in-chief SCOPE 1987 Dedication John E. McDonald It is with great pride, adoration, and re- spect that we dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Jack McDonald - an adept teacher, a good friend, and a superior human being. “Mr. Mac,” as he is affectionately referred to, is a truly special person who, during his years at Clarke, has touched more lives and affected more attitudes than most people can in a life- time. He has dedicated himself to his work and to his students, and the success he has achieved is immeasurable. Most students who go through Clarke have the benefit of being associated with Mr. McDonald in one way or another. His classroom is just the tip of the iceberg, as his dedication to the school extends to many special activities. He is a notable figure on the sports field, successfully coaching baseball and soccer. Mr. Mac also lends his expertise to the Junior High Musical, a wonderful tradition which he started and still continues with great enthusiasm. Under his leadership and guidance, many Clarke students have gone on to pursue professional careers in both sports and drama. His services to the school have been year-round, and he has barely enough time to take a breath before a new activity on his agenda begins. In his classroom, Mr. McDonald teaches more than social studies, he teaches what it means to be a happy and well-balanced person. His words of wisdom are an inspiration to us all. For his expertise, his dedication, and for the love which he relentlessly gives to his students, we, his students, acknowledge these gifts and extend our warmest and deepest gratitude to this very special man. 4 Dedication Roy Siegel It is a man of gret sensitivity, a man of enor- mous devotion, and a man of undying warmth and affection that we dedicate this yearbook to - Mr. Roy Siegel. Mr. Siegel is an exceptional person whose teaching does not end in the class- room, but extends beyond the bounds of the mandatory curriculum. As a teacher of art, Mr. Siegel is very talented, but, moreover, the love that he shares with his students and the dedica- tion he shows toward his work is artwork in it- self. Mr. Siegel teaches students a new medium of self-expression through artwork. He endeav- ors to give students a new perspective of life with the appreciation of and participation in the creation of art. It takes a truly passionate person to be such a fine instructor of the pas- sionate subject of art. Accordingly, Mr. Siegel demonstrates his love and devotion towards the students in many capacities outside the classroom. It is ironic that one way in which he has contributed a great deal to the students is in his sponsorship of the Scope Yearbook. He has been of immeasurable importance to the graduating Seniors over the years through his participation in the yearbook. Because the yearbook is such a meaningful and lasting remembrance for Clarke graduates, it is a truly outstanding achievement to have contributed to it in such a magnanimous way. Because Mr. Siegel has devoted his love and services to the graduating Seniors over the many years, it is altogether fitting that we, the graduating Seniors of 1987, pay heed and show our enormous gratitude to the man who has given so much of himself to us and our fellow graduates. Mr. Siegel has inspired us with his vast knowledge of art, with his dedication to his students, and with his marvel- ous sense of humor. He is a wonderful and very gifted man. We will always remember his charm and wit, admire his devotion, respect him as a teacher, and love him as a person. 5 w- HOMECOMING 5 A Time To Remember The theme of our yearbook reflects what our yearbook is all about - Time. It is the time we have spent at Clarke and the times we will continue to remember after graduation. We may look at this book, through its many pages of words and pictures, and recall the memories that are stored within. Through these memories, in our minds and in our hearts we may relive the time that has been spent. Benjamin Franklin once said, “Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff that life is made of.” Our time in this world is limited and precious, so we must take advantage of every minute and live it to its fullest. Time means many different things to different people. When we are young it is a mystery to us, for we have our whole lives before us. When we are adults we may begin to understand it. When we are old we realize what a true gift it is. We are granted the opportunity to live a lifetime, and, perhaps, to make a mark that will live beyond us for all time. We set our goals and pursue our dreams with the hope that time will allow us to attain them. Our time at Clarke has started us on our way to attaining these goals and the fulfillment of our dreams. We fondly remember the time we have spent here, and look toward the future with anticipation and hope. 16 Michael Alfano Gina M. It is the responsibility of these people to establish the policies which gov- ern the operations of our school district. Each month meetings are held at one of the high schools to discuss personnel and financial matters. On certain dates the pub- lic is invited to attend to voice their opinions and to request information from the board. This encourages community participation which fur- ther enables our Board of Educa- tion to better serve our school dis- trict on all matters. SOPHO- MORCS Tom Henning RAM, TOUGH By Andrew Pincus fls another Clarke football season comes to on end. all Rom fans ore again left dreaming of a winning sea- son. But, os oil fans knouu, success does not occur overnight. Let us ad- mire the progress mode this season rather than the record we established. Lost year the Clorke Roms scored oil but two touchdowns throughout the entire season, and were basically anni- hilated in every gome. This year we were able to establish a fairly stable offense. Through o gutsy running gome and o sometimes effective aerial at- tack. we were able to put our new scoreboard to good use. Now lets talk about our defense. LUhen I think of the Rom defense, the first word that comes to mind is SPIRIT. These high-spirited men, ot times, showed the fans that they mean busi- ness. They hit hard and often intimidat- ed their opponents. Vou may be ask- ing, If they're so good, why did they give up so many points? The answer is quite obvious, depth. In order for this, or any other Clorke team, to hove 0 winning season, they must hove more people participating in the pro- gram. Now that you hove basically finished this article, you're probably thinking to yourself, Did this kid lie? I suggest that you open your eyes and look ot this post and what this team has done. UUe hove had a lot of support by the fans and the School Spirit Society. This shows o definite interest for this school and its football program. In the near future, although most of the present team will hove graduated, 1 see Clorke Football having a winning, and maybe even, o playoff season. I would personally like to thank these guys for a great season. courtesy of the Vanguard Case's Babies SCPSON SUMMPPV OPPONENT SCORe Baldwin .Berner, Oyster Bay Cold Spring Harbor New Hyde Park Bethpage Manhasset Locust Valley North Shore Great Neck North Corle Plack (u [ fluUheotley' I Garden City Cold Spring Horbor Great Neck South North Shore CLfiRHC SCOPC l 122 VnnSITV FI€LD HOCK6V COACH - Case, S6NIORS Meredith Blitz (Capt), Rosie Chomicz (Copt). The 1986 Clarke Cross-Country team, the most successful team in the history of Clarke cross-country, has given the coach alot of good memories to hold on too. finishing second in the divi- sion, third in the conference, fifth in Nassau County in Class B, eighth overall in the county, and a regular season record of 9 wins and 2 losses, made this season a memorable one for Coach Holzager and the team. The winning feeling of the team was ubiqitious said co- captain Dan Middleman. Dan, the Nassau County and New Vork State champ, led the team to many victories by not losing a race in the regular. However, Dan was by far not the only one to come through in the clutch. Senior, co-captain Jim Coucou- las caught on fire in the late season by finishing sixth in the conference championships, fif- teenth in the counties, and win- ning the Teddy Roosevelt Invi- tational at the end of the sea- son. Jimmy was named All-Divi- sion, Rll-Conference, and All- County. Another runner who came through in the important meets with Brian fidelman. The Senior, who besides being named Most-Improved on the team, was awarded All-Division and All-Conference. On a successful team it is es- sential to have strong men in the fourth and fifth spots. All-Division runners Tony Curatolo and Glenn Stryjewski were rock solid in filling these positions. Dedication to a team is always important for morale. €ver-im- proving sophomore, Ricky Rau, and Juniors Keith Ernst and Joe Ludwig showed this dedication during the season. All three will be essential to next years win- ning season. Sophomore Scott Silva, and Juniors Brad Levien, Sean Clancy, Govind Atwoi, and Nerol Cabaz all helped turn hard work into success and will be im- portant factors in next years team is to be ‘ 'a force to be reck- oned with. As usual, leading the pock - the man, the myth, the leg- end, the bicycle meister - Mike Marchesi. Congratulations to Coach Hol- zager on a fine season. This record is deceiving, how- ever, os sophomore guard Kris- tine Duffy pointed out, In the beginning of the season, we were unsure of ourselves, but now we are feeling positive about our play, and we are playing like a team. The players' goals were lim- ited in the beginning, the coach stated. Now we are a compe- tive team in every game we play. Noellyn Koo is the team's most threatening offensive player, averaging fifteen points per game from her guard position. Carolyn Zang, the team's only senior, leads the defense with her swift steals that set up easy layups. She starts as a guard as well, but can give relief to Noel- lyn at point guard when needed. IJLIith her average of ten points a game, Carolyn is on important cog in a well oiled machine. Sophomores Diane Gibbs and Kristine Duffy have helped add dimension to the team. Dione is o very strong rebounder, while Kristine specializes in defense. Another Diane, Diane Schneider, also a sophomore, uses her skills as a ballhandler to aid the Clarke attack, while Nicole Avery comes off the bench to help the team in key situations. UUith only one senior, the team can work together and improve for on even more successful campaign next year. Nicole Avery. For our lives we have alloted but a fraction of that time, In which to live a life that’s full and always in its prime. We must realize it’s a gift that is too precious to be wasted, Every fragrance must be smelled and every flavor must be tasted. For man cannot manipulate the clock into his favor, Every second of each day of every year he has to savor. For when we’re old and look back on the time that we have spent, We may rejoice in having used it to its ultimate extent. - David Wasserman 149 SENIOR DIRECTORY Gina M. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don’t give up though the pace seems slow— You may succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out— The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell just how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far; So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit- It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit. m 165 A 37 Year Family Tradition of Quality Catering DONALD U'COMPTU General Manager 244 01.D COUNTRY RD HICKSVII.LK. 1.
