DEDICATION Mr. William Murphy It is with gratitude that we dedicate this yearbook to Mr. William Murphy who, through his concern for young people, has found the Fountian of Youth. In his eighteen years at Clarke, he has coached sports and has been advisor to classes. Model Congress, and numerous clubs. He is the person to whom students can come to ask questions on anything from sports injuries to points of legal procedure. He consistently gives of his free time to help students on both scholastic and personal matters. He may run the fastest, swim the farthest, or mountian climb with the greatest endurance. But in the end. it is when he is simply sitting, surrounded by his students, that he is truly at his best. It is then that the special nature of this multi-talented man is most apparent. With patience and perseverence, Mr. Murphy, teaches more than textbook business; he teaches the business of the world. He is a gentle man, fleet of foot, nimble of wit, and generous with advice and time. 2 The City of New York Office of the Mayor New York, N.Y. 10007 January 1984 Mr. Eric Rubin Editor-in-Chief Scope '84 W. The team had a 171-2 overall record. They scored a team-high of 100 goals, and finished in a tie for first place in their conference. After breezing through the quarter and semi finals, they faced conference rivals, Island Trees. In their previous meetings this season. Island Trees defeated Clarke 2-1, and the Bulldogs and the Rams played to a 2-2 tie. Their final meeting, the Country Finals, set the scene for an unforgetable game. Island Trees took an early TO lead and in the second half added another goal. With only 7 minutes left to play and Clarke down 2-0, it looked like Clarke was out of the race. But Captain Ann Pouria, on assists from Kim Giampietro, scored two goals in two minutes to tie the game. After two scoreless overtime periods the game went into a shootout. Unfortunately, Clarke lost the shootout 3-0. To make things harder, the team was promoted to the highest division in their conference, and lost 7 starters to graduation. Still, they performed admirably, posting a 10-21 record overall and gaining a spot in the playoffs. After beating Roslyn, they met arch-rival Plain view JFK in the quarter-finals. After playing to a 1-1 draw, they suffered a heartbreaking defeat in a shootout. 112 Doug Howe All-Conference John Litt All-Conference Mike Moss All-Division FOOTBALL Bob ViUemure All-Division Someone once said, “Good things come to those who wait,” and that’s a comforting statement to fans of W. Tresper Clarke Football. Two years ago under the new head coach, Spencer Meehan, Clarke struggled through a 2- 6 season. “It was a year of introduction for me and the players, and a lot of learning went on, ” Meehan said. The coach likes to call his second season “a year of transition,” a year in which the coach’s long range plan of establishing a winning team began to reap some rewards. The Rams responded by compiling a 4-4-1 record. The Rams ran the difficult triple option offense, and ran it better than most teams in Nassau County. As a result of this offensive execution, the Rams led the county in scoring with 231 points. “This year has been a special one,” comments Coach Meehan. “To be able to guide and train remarkable athletes to a level a achievements that are their personal best ever, gives me a sense of fulfillment. He set many of us on the right path from the very start. At Clarke we knew him as a coach and as a friend. He was always there when we needed him and he always cared. He would lend a sympathetic ear or a helping hand, whichever was needed. Mr. Chianese truly had a heart of gold. Asa person he was admired, as a teacher and coach he was respected, and as a human being he was loved. He will always be remembered. 131 I « -' ? '‘ V m W ■ NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY First Row: A. Standing: Philip Botwinik (Treasurer), Michelle Ginsburg (Secretary) 149 m fin mm Homecoming ’83 was a great success on the field and off. There were more spectators, more students working on the floats, and more points on the scoreboard than last year. Homecoming involved a colorful parade, a presentation by the band, and the crowning of King Todd Lewis and Queen Dawn Shan ley. But more importantly, it provided a chance for alumni, students, and friends of Clarke to meet in fellowship. Advisors Mr. Bialomizy and Mrs. Hershkowitz were very helpful in shaping this annual event. We at Scope ’84 would also like to thank Mr. Al Scheffer, the senior class advisor, for his help in building the floats. Homecoming '83 co-chairs Michelle Ginsburg and Lisette Greco, and especially the Clarke Rams football team for delivering a dramatic 40-34 victory over cross town rival West bury. Over three-hundred “delegates” from around the country participated in the three-day weekend of debates, speeches, and festivities. Guest speakers included Town Supervisor Thomas Gulotta and CJ.S. When the funds arc low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don’t you quit. Ijfc is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out; Don’t give up though the pace seems slow- You may succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out— The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell just how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far; So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit— It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit. 516-785-6066 212-297-4077 2623 NORTH JERUSALEM ROAD EAST MEADOW, N.Y. 11554 178 Good Luck To The Class Of 1984 From The NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY MOVING, RELOCATING AN WHERE IN THE COUNTRY WE CAN ALSO HELP YOU CALL TOLL FREE 1-800-523-2460 EXT.
