SCOPE 1982 W. Tresper Clarke High School Westbury, Hew York 25th Anniversary Edition DEDICATION MRS. ELEANOR GLUCK There are not enough adequate accolades with which to comment on the teaching talents of Eleanor S. Gluck. For twenty-three years Mrs. Gluck wholeheartedly dedicated herself to the task of educating students in the joys of literature and the delights of using language correctly and effectively. In addition, she was a faculty advisor to REFLECTIONS, a participant in faculty productions, an editor or exceptional skill for the work of both faculty and students (she spotted with ease the errant phrase or comma). Further, she willingly wrote countless letters of recommendation for students applying to college and counseled them with regard to career choices. As a perfectionist, she did not suffer fools gladly but instead assisted them in acquiring knowledge with which to better their thinking, writing, and speaking. Her dangling earrings, something of a trademark, shook with pleasure as a student discovered a symbol in a literary piece. She extended to her students loving concern and delighted in their successes. Mrs. Eleanor Gluck is a Clarke treasure, a teaching legend, who will be sorely missed. We wish her much good luck and happiness as we dedicate to her this 1982 edition of SCOPE. DEDICATION MR. JOHN LEGGETT To an excellent educator with an everpresent zest for learning and the patience required for the process to occur. You have gained “extra points’’ by helping us way above and far beyond the call of duty with extracurricular activities and by pushing us to achieve our full potential, when even we are not able to recognize what we are capable of attaining. Your unique sense of humor has marked the good times; your sensitivity and warmth has guided us through tragedy. To a past, present, and future Shepherd, we say “Thank You.” We love you, Mr. Leggett, and wish you only the best, whether you’re steering a boat out at sea or living in a quiet cabin on the coast of Maine, Your presence will always be felt. Your gift to us has been invaluable knowledge, and the pleasure of your company. This, SCOPE 1982, is our gift to you. 4 5 nr Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime. We’ll take the best, forget the rest, and someday we’ll find .... These are the best of times. ■ Styx 9 Memories May be beautiful, And yet What’s too painful to remember. We simply choose to forget. So it’s the laughter We will remember Whenever we remember, The way we were. - Marvin Hamlisch Looking through some photoghraphs I found inside a drawer. I was taken By a photoghraph of you. There were one or two I know that you Would have liked a little more. But they didn’t show your spirit Quite as true. You were turning ’round To see who was behind you. And I took your childish laughter By surprise. And at the moment That my camera happenedJ to find you. There was just a trace Of sorrow In your eyes . . . ■Jackson Browne SENIORS Jeffrey Agins Arthur Angulo Susan Armstrong Barbara Anderson Donna Antoni sen Anthony Arpino Nancy Aspenleiter Tracy Apanel Andrew Arias Suzanne Birong Esperanza Bisbal Richard Blech Amy Blumenberg Michael Basel Paul Baynes Lewis Berman Robert Babkowski Michael Bonura Richard Borelli 18 Cheryl Carvelli Theresa Catal Lisa Calandro Eva Cea Albert Celentano Tricia Ceroni Felicia Cerrella Claude L. In so many ways Allan was the typical American kid - so much like all of you. His life was filled with countless committments — taking him in every direction; where did he ever find the time in each day? Of course his Senior year was wonderful, and he loved every minute of it. Life was exciting. He had worked hard in school and now there were the rewards. Suddenly he could take things a little easier and have lots of time to participate in sports which he enjoyed so much. And college was just around the corner. He had just passed his driving test and this was his key to independence. Yes, there was no stopping Allan. He was the kind of kid who would go after anything he wanted, and he had so many plans and dreams. As a family we were all looking forward to the future together, and we were so proud of him. To us Allan was very special. Although everything seemed to come easily to him, we who were closest to him knew that it was no accident that he was to have graduated tenth in his class. He knew the direction he was taking, and he worked with drive and determination to achieve his goals. The wonderful thing about this was that it was not at the expense of anything else. There was always time for meaningful and deep friendships, for lots of horsing around with his brothers, for doing whatever had to be done to fulfill family responsibilities. Although Allan was the youngest of three children, he had confidence in himself that could not be shaken. He was dependable - we knew who we could always count on! He worked easily in a very natural way and he never worried about anything. He was carefree, yet responsible, fun-loving, yet considerate - a very unique combination. We think the most special thing about Allan was that at seventeen he sensed some things that many people never learn - the importance of a close family. He shared a kinship with his two brothers, and they were his closest friends. He always treated his grandparents with respect, and he let them know how special they were to him. He was a loving and caring son, always looking for ways to make things a little bit easier for us. He was a sensitive and perceptive young man - warm and congenial. He displayed these qualities with his family, his friends and many other people who touched his life. What legacy could Allan have left with those of us whose lives he touched? He was too young to have made any great discoveries. He was too young to have devoted himself to research. He was too young to have become a leader dedicated to upholding all the righteousness our country stands for. He was too young to have changed the world - even a little bit. He was too young to have died. It is only through you that Allan's aims and goals and dreams will be fulfilled. You are America's leaders of tomorrow. You will guide our country as you each travel the paths you wish to cross. There are so many choices before you. Allan’s life ended in violence, so very contrary to the ideals he upheld. You must go forward and deal with each situation in such a way that you will always be proud of yourselves. Never compromise your standards, your values, or your ethics. Fight for what you believe in - gun control, capital punishment, whatever is important to you. Don't just stand by. Make a committment. Help to make this a better and safer world. This is the way Allan would have wanted it to be. • i- - -5. ■ ■ i m,.. 70 IIY LOVING MEMORY MR. DOMINIC NOTTI For the past fifteen years, I frequently played golf with Nick Notti. After my retirement, it became almost a daily rit- ual for me and my wife to meet him on the golf course, Nick racing there to un- wind from a day of teaching. Very little deterred us, for while inclement weather might thin our ranks, Nick and I would plod on, trying to overcome every chal- lenge to the completion of our round. Admittedly, he was a different man after he teed off, as if golf were a kind of therapy to help him over the day s accu- mulation of problems. He loved golf with a passion few could parallel and it is hard for me to recall him, now that he is gone, in a setting other than the golf course. This, despite the fact that I worked with him at Tresper Clarke High School for more than sixteen years and had daily contact with him at school as well as the links. How then do I remember this constant companion of my golfing days? How do I recall this little fellow who strode the links like a colossus, the glass of fashion, with his ubiquitous white hat which made him look like a smaller Ben Hogan, an image he cared to foster? I remember Nick Notti as a man who quite simply put meaning into the much-used work class ’ who unmistakably exuded a sense of dignity that made him tower over others despite his lack of height. His impact was indelible among his pupils, his fellow teachers and his friends. In everything he did, he displayed the same dedication to perfection, a cool profes- sional skill which he applied with a fierce zest, and the ability to earn a lasting re- spect from all those who were fortunate enough to have known him. His accomplishments as a teacher (and craftsman) of industrial arts made one quickly realize that this man was indeed a perfectionist. In everything, he never settled for second best. Everything had to be first class: his equipment, his clothes, and of course, his game of golf which he played with such skill and com- petitive zeal that he quickly struck terror in the hearts of his adversaries (usually me). It was not enough to make a miracu- lous shot; the manner, the execution of it was more important to Nick. I also remember Nick Notti when we would meet in the faculty room at Clarke where his presence was intensely felt by his fellow teachers. There, he would dra- matically expound on his philosophy of life, politics, the economy, men, women and any other subject that came up. On the golf course, on the other hand, most of the conversation naturally was on golf, that elusive, complicated, frustrating game in which he excelled. For years he coached the golf team and was his proud assistant, proud to be near such an excellent man, proud to be associated with this superb athlete who though built like a baby bull, could handle a putter like a magic wand and drive a golf ball with ease a consistent and exasperatingly straight 230-240yards. And he was proud too. Oh yes, he took great pride in his rare skill which he added to his many others. Over the years, I met many of his fellow coaches; very few were his match in the game of golf or how it was taught, and most of them freely admitted this. The thing I remember most about him was his fierce striving for perfection and his fragile tolerance for those who did not share his ideals. He never hesitated to let you know how he felt; if he liked you, you knew it, and if he disliked you, you found out even faster. As I look back, the dimensions of the man take on greater meaning and clarity to me. I shared in his aspirations for his four sons as he would keep me informed almost daily of their progress. He was a proud, affectionate father, a loving hus- band, a lover of good music, a gourmet and a linguist who took an annoying plea- sure in correcting my French, despite my protestations that I was a former teacher of French. Once when I hummed an aria from Rigoletto, he cut me off with dis- dain and proceeded to sing in impeccable Italian. Another day when I broke into a song from Gilbert and Sullivan, he com- manded me to stop because You're kill- ing it!'' and then proceeded to sing it in a sweet, unforgettably melodious voice, word for word. He then finished me off with the astounding revelation that he had once been the director of a Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta company. Were there no limits to this man? Oh yes, he was an excellent raconteur and all of us would look forward to his incessant store of humorous stories, expertly told. For the past year, he kept me informed of his retirement plans, explaining in de- tail what retirement would mean to him — what an ineffable dream this was to him and his family. Last week, in antici- pation of the fruition of his dream, he purchased a new car which he proudly displayed to me and my wife on the golf course parking lot. And three days after he had bought the car and some six weeks before his projected retirement, he suddenly was gone. With dreadful final- ity, his heart gave out and he was no more. Nick, Nick — who will play golf with us everyday? Who will teach us how to be a man? Who will show us how to sink that putt? Who will add to life that rare ingredient you so skillfully imparted, that great pleasure that only a great and true friend can render? Who will tell us those wonderful stories? Nick, who — who in- deed can replace you? Goodbye, sweet friend — goodbye coach, goodbye sweet, fierce prince and golfing buddy. We will miss you. The Rams ripped through the opening rounds of the playoffs and in the nerve-wracking semi-final game against Great Neck South, Dave Voelpel’s last-minute double-overtime goal secured victory and a spot in the County Class B finals. The agony of defeat is seen in the face of Goalie Tom Young (page 109) after Cold Spring Harbor scored two goals in the last eight minutes to beat Clarke, 2-1. The team, under Coach Dan Deegan, was undefeated in the regular season and took first place in their division. The season came to an unfortunate halt when the Rams lost to Berner, 3- 0, in the first round of the playoffs. The girls show their appreciation for all Coach Deegan s support and guidance in the following poem: It’s hard for us to explain the way We worked so hard and wanted to play. We tried our best and just got beat, But to all of us it wasn’t defeat. We give our thanks to the special man Who gave his time to lend us a hand. Dedication and cooperation among teammates contributed to their success. The team qualified for the Nassau County Championships, and finished fifth (beating last year’s eighth place). In the Individual Championships, Terri Tuchman and Barbara Fallon received 7.65 on floor exercise, winning third place. Debbie Kassan scored 6.5 on the uneven bars for fourth place. Coach Rogers largely contributed to the team’s success. Her leadership, support, and knowledge was a definite motivating force for the girls. WINTER TRACK co ALL-CONFERENCE: T. Danseglio, D. NJ Season after season, the Clarke Varsity Cheerleaders have supported the boys' football and basketball teams. But the girls are more than accessories to boys' sports; they are competitors in their own right. This year, the squad placed third in the Nassau Cheerleading Competition and seventh in the All-Long Island Competition, held at Clarke High School. They are also very proud of the junior varsity squad, which placed second in both events. The varsity squad, led by co-captains Diane Randall and Joanne Wirth, are recognized for their sideline spirit and energy, and as the best squad in their conference. They kept halftime crowds in the stands with their precision routines and awe- inspiring mounts. 1982 will graduate the pioneers of Clarke cheering excellence. Four-year veterans Emily Oberwager, Joline Mason, Kim Demeter, Mary Ellen McNicho l, Colleen Kelly, as well as Diane and Joanne, were members of the 1978 squad, the first in Clarke history to enter a cheering competition. They were the first to attend cheering camp to improve as a team, and the first squad in many years to get new uniforms. The girls have made enormous gains not only in raising the level of cheering on the fields and courts, but in having cheering recognized as a sport in itself. KJ MEN’S BASKETBALL Front: C.
