ROY F. SIEGEL ‘Dedication We, the Class of '63, cannot pos- sibly convey the appreciation we feel towards the man who has been a devoted teacher, friend, and adviser to us all. To such a warm person as he, with his im- measurable sense of humor, we think a simple Thanks can ex- press our feelings far better than lengthy speeches. Thus, with the deepest sincerity, we dedicate SCOPE '6.3 to Mr. Roy F. Siegel. To Mr. Siegel, the SCOPE '63 Staff would like to add its own thanks for: 1. Tolerating the unusual atmos- phere of our office 2. Providing us with the privi- leged use of our own type- writer, fire extinguisher, gar- bage pail, and ladder 3. And most of all, just being you! Introduction: It was new: Glass shining, paint fresh. Lockers unscratched, desks unmarred, Bulletin boards awaiting their first thumb tack. This is how it was— William Tresper Clarke Junior-Senior High School —Just a building. Now' we look around and see Scratches, cracks in the walls. Metal showing through the paint. Names carved on desks and tables (Barbara loves Joey). This is how it is— Clarke! And when we meet an old classmate— Hey! Remember Soupy Sales Day— Remember the lost keys and the day World War III was supposed to begin? And what about the Cuban Crisis— And the day we heard the blast-off of Shepard on the P.A.? We won't remember the building— We'll think of the teachers and the classes . . . Remember when we acted out Macbeth in Mr. Steiner’s English Class? Mr. De Ciutiis' sinking Martian— And Mr. Leggett’s home movies and Richard Harding Davis? We'll remember how' we.were then— What we thought and how' we've changed— From badgered freshmen to glorious seniors. cAdn i in istra tion and Jaculty These men And women Gave us A gift So great, So wondrous. The first readings were over. ”1 tried out for the mother—imagine! Then the day came when the list of finalists was to be posted. Is it up yet? ”1 made the second reading! Finally the cast was selected. Rehearsals began, controlled, directed, guarded, and supervised by Miss McNamara. A teen-age world was being built on the stage of Clarke. Arthur Beaumont (Norman Shechner) led a group of boys whose problem was—Girls. Buford Wormy” Weldy (Stu Salomon), boy-blunderer, led those who were disconcerted with parents, girls, and the world-at-large. He and his friends created a mythical town, Sneaky Falls, Idaho, on the banks of the Itching River, where boys reigned supreme and all girls were Bernardine, the ideal of every boyish heart. Bernardine (Paula Weiss), older, mature, wordly, whose only wish was to please, was the Queen of Sneaky Falls. On December 7 and 8, the curtain rose on a frightened cast and nervous backstage crew. So many props! What if the glass falls? What if I drop the table? My lines! I forgot my lines!” Makeup, costumes, lights— We get to wear grease paint! Hey, I'm an actor! After the curtain fell to a roaring audience on Saturday night, an exhausted, exuberant cast went trooping off to their reward—a cast party, unforgettable and quite infamous. JAMES H. Although in Australia we speak the same language and have a similar standard of living, there are many differences between the two countries. The schools are different, many of the sports are different, and even the students are different. I have enjoyed learn- ing these things and understanding them. But more important than that, 1 have made many friends. The students of Clarke have been so friendly that very soon after coming to Clarke I no longer felt new and strange. Many of the practices here at Clarke were different, but someone was always willing to ex- plain them so that I would understand. This helped me to become part of the student body and to regard myself as an ordinary student. I appreciate this and recognize that it has helped me to be very happy this year. Three things have made this year outstanding. The warmth and friendliness of the students, the understand- ing and patience of the faculty, and the kindness and love of my family, the Westees. I think that I will always remember my year in the United States as a very happy one. 1 would like to thank those people who made it possible to bring me here to attend Clarke. Thank you and good luck and success in the future to all at Clarke.
