TIME hat made Clarke what it is today for Time represents the money, energy, and progress that have enabled us to develop from a vague idea, to a blueprint, and finally to a reputable school. TIME is the raw material for success if utilized as a source of knowledge, experience, and joy—a source from which improvement can emerge. It is with this philosophy that we are proud to present . . . TIME has been responsible for Clarke’s evolvement from infancy into o impressionable youth. It has made it possible for us, also, to grow, as a class, from an assemblage of disorganized Freshmen into purposeful Seniors. SCOPE 1962 W. TRESPER CLARKE HIGH SCHOOL Westbury, New York “Delightful task! to rear the tender Thought, To teach the young Idea how to shoot, To pour the fresh Instruction o'er the Mind, To breathe the enlivening Spirit, and to fix The generous Purpose in the glowing breast —Thomson These are the goals and pleasures of a true educator. We, as a class, feel that you, Mr. George Hopke, are such an educator. We gratefully acknowledge the fact that from your support has emanated our success, from your patience our progress, from your leadership our learning, and from your confidence our character. As an expression of sincere gratitude, we, the Class of T62, assume both the honor and privilege of dedicating to you our yearbook. Dear Graduates: The theme of this, your yearbook, is ‘'Time. ’ I cannot think of a more appropriate topic, since time is, after all, our most precious possession. A great deal of yours has been spent in school. The wisdom, or foolishness with which you have made use of your time is now on the record. As you leave our school for future study, work, or a period in the armed forces, I hope that you will use your time and talents wisely and unstint- ingly. There is so much to be done in the world that none of us can afford to waste any of the precious stuff. To waste time is to waste opportunities to make this a better world in which all of us may live. All of us at Clarke wish you the best of luck. We have great hopes for the future, and for the part you will play in it. Yours sincerely, GEORGE K. HOPKE Principal As we view in retrospect the value of these last four years, we realize that our progress s primarily based upon the magnanimous efforts of the Administration and Faculty to instill within us a desire for education. Their unselfish assistance has given us an intelligence of life and its complexities. From this newly-acquired understanding, we hope to gain the ability to compete with Time as we journey down the long and trying roads to seek the light that shines in the distance. A high school career may be thought of as a ladder, for in climbing a ladder we raise a foot aloft over each succeeding rung before we lower it to rest firmly. Such has been the case in these last four years . . . we have risen from Freshmen to Seniors, climbed four difficult rungs. Upon each one we have come a step closer to reaching our desired goals. Even momentary setbacks have not hindered our progress—progress that has been nurtured and bred by Time and prog- ress that will aid us in reaching the top rungs of the ladder, which, as we look up, seem to be the farthest apart. 26 Miss M. This year their production of You Can’t Take It With You, a comedy by George Kaufman and Moss Hart, came alive under the expert direction of Mrs. Marsha Ehrlich. 42 Its humorous plot revolved around Martin “Gramps” Vanderhof (Joel Druckman) and his somewhat unusual family: his daughter, Penelope (Mary Jean Loizzo), who writes plays; Penny’s daughter, Essie (Joanne Sobel), who fancies herself a ballerina; an- other daughter, Alice (April Waltzer); a son, Paul (Mike Hamburg); and Essie's husband, Ed. Many other colorful characters frequent the Vanderhof household, including Rheba, the maid, and her boyfriend, Donald (Judy Pearlman and Peter Urban); Boris Kolenkhof (Steve Danow), Essie’s ballet teacher; Mr. De Pinna (Warren Klein), who explodes fire- works in the basement; Gay Wellington (Dottie Berzac), an inebriate actress; and Olga Katrine (Grace Nadola), a one time Grand Duchess who now earns her living as a waitress. All these charming people as well as two “G-men” (Vinnie Forbes, Ken Kurzweil) and Henderson, the revenue man (Alan Gould), who have to investigate the bizarre activities of the household, are on hand when Tony Kirby (Jim O’Brein), Alice’s boyfriend, and his snobbish parents (Michael Greene and Barbara Earley) arrive for dinner one night earlier than expected. You Can't Take It With You was a happy bit of madness that played to enthusiastic audiences on both December first and sec- ond and more than satisfied its most severe critics. NATALIE K. ZOILO Prom Committee Office Aide Intromurols Lab Assistant Vocational Director PROM On a beautiful brisk evening late last Janu- ary, we celebrated the biggest event of our Junior year—the prom. We will always hold in fond memory the august majesty of this night—the boys in their highly-styled tux- edos, the girls in their pastel gowns, couples dancing to romantic music, all enchanted by a sparkling winter setting. At the stroke of twelve, Nick Fici and JoAnn Mastronardy were ceremoniously crowned King and Queen, and together the royal couple danced among us into the early hours of the morning. . . . ACTIVITIES By participating in the many fields which mirror our aspirations, we make good use of Time for we do not allow advantage to slip. We enrich our own favored interests, or those acquired from our academic life, as we work with others, share ideas and experi- ences, and contribute to the school com- munity. From the merging of our interests come many clubs and annual school events —the fountains from which self-expression flows. T. Ludutsky-Pres., C. Spier-V.P., Mr. J. leggetf-Adviser, C. It is from these elements that we have created many fond memories—mem- ories from whose roots our minds and bodies will permanently be strengthened. 94 ‘ % FOOTBALL Surprise was the word used to describe the performance of Clarke’s 1962 Varsity Foot- ball Squad. With most of the team having graduated in ’61, the fall season did not look promising. Pessimistic predictions were forecast, but the Rams Eleven (D. Giel and R. Klimkowski, co-captains, T. Bach, G. Angellilo, R. Cormelius, A. Capozzi, T. Esposito, P. Noreia, B. Benith, N. Fici, and F. Tafuro) were proud to display a final record of five wins, two losses, and one tie. As the season terminated, Clarke ranked second in her league and had defeated the league champion, Hicksville, 14-13. First Row: T. Esposito, D. Borich, S. Alexander, A. Capozzi, B. Mita, D. Giel, N. Its team was hindered by a lack of experience and a great lack of height, the tallest man being 6 2 . The scoring was divided evenly among the five starters (Ron Klimkowski, Nick Fici, Lou Cazenza, Marty Rivard, and Pete De Martini). Countering defeat was the wholesome attitude of spirit that existed throughout the entire season. 101 First Row: A. Davis, M. Rivard, N. Fici, P. De Martini, M. Entmacher. Second Row: J. Kahrs. K. There are many differences, but you Americans believe in the same ideals in life, the freedom of the individual, and the same democratic government. It has been a year full of new experience, as coming to a new world, which I in fact almost did. Difficulties have come up, and all the small adjustments I have had to make—I do not think you would understand before you try it yourselves. I would like to express a sincere thanks to all you students (and Mr. Hopke and the faculty members) for making it pos- sible for me to come here, and making it such a wonderful stay. I feel that this year will stand out as one of the best in my life, in experience, new friendships, and happiness. I wish all of you could have the same opportunity to live with the people in a foreign country; it is such a wonderful experience. I hope that I have done my little share in furthering peace and understanding in this world, and also that you will not quite forget me. Sincerely, Turid Skancke from Norway The underclassmen of Clarke High School are fortunate to be members of a student body so highly reputed for sincerity, originality, and academic ac- complishments. To be mem- bers in good standing, how- ever, is not to sit back and take credit for the work of others . . . it is to inspire clear, inde- pendent thinking—thinking that will result in the continued success of our school. It is up to the Freshmen, Soph- omores, and Juniors alike to maintain and embellish Clarke’s reputation, for it is in them that Time, the instigator of improvement, will kindle the spark of ambition. 109 o THE CLASS OF 1963 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS AND ADVISOR Dennis Callan—President, Marge Smith—Vice President, Betty Hornbuckle—Secretary, Ann Savin—Treasurer Mr. John Catron, Advisor THE CLASS OF 1964 K THE CLASS OF 1965 HOMEROOM D-5 MR.
