SIMS, the third ship of the United to bear the name of Admiral William States Navy Sowden SIMS, was constructed by Avondale Sh' rds, and was commissioned on 3 January 1970, ipya in Charleston, South Carolina, her homeport IS Mayport, Florida. USS W. S. SIMS is a member of the Knox Class of Frigates and is equipped with the Navy's longest ' 1 e t range underwater sound detection equipmen CSONARQ and an ' ' Control System. Her armament consists of the rface missile system, ASROC fAnti-Submarine Rocketj, hull-mounted torpedoes tubes, 5 f54 Rapid Fire Gun Mount, and the Basic Point Defense Surface to Air Missile System. As an extended range sensor and weapon delivery system she is capable of carrying the LAMPS Helicopter. When operating in conjunction with surface and air units of the Atlantic Fleet, she comprises a formidable advanced Anti-Submarine Fire Harpoon surface to su ' -f. Q-sw -+ ,M ,. aff? SIMS has been called upon to perform a multitudg of tasks, ranging from cruising the placid waters of the Caribbean to pounding through the turbulent North Atlantic. She has often been chosen to perform as test ship for experimental systems, a. fitting 1-019 for a ship named after the bold innovator who revolutionized Naval Gunnery doctrine. W, S, SIMS has successfully completed six extended periods of operations with the U.S. Sixth Fleet in 1972, in 1973-74 during the Middle East Crisis, in 1977, in 1978, 1980-81, and 1982. I V Wi. S.
