The traditional Thanksgiving game lthe Bearcats still lead in wins, 28 to Z7 and 5 tiesl, a bruising battle, saw the Bearcats lose, 26 to 7. Two quick touchdowns in the first five minutes saw the Centralia Tigers take the lead which was never headed. The Bearcats had everything but the breaks. The big Bearcat line swarmed over the tigers repeatedly, but lady luck was always looking the other way. Guard Don Long, senior co-caption, was the individual defensive star of the Crimson and Gray, making 2I tackles. The second quarter saw the Bearcats register their only touchdown. A 70 yard drive was capped by a pass from Bud Wedin to senior co- captain Tim Wood, who made a basketball jump to gather it in. Wedin's kick was good and 5 seconds later the gun sounded, ending the half. This year's Chehalis Bearcat football team brought home head coach Rod Giske's third league championship in seven years. The Bearcats were also ranked sixth in the state as a Class A high school. As a final tribute the squad voted on the special award winners. The honorary co-captains, were seniors Tim Wood and Dick Huber. Dick Huber also received the Advocate's Most Valuable Player Award . Chuck Denny, a junior, and Neal Gerber, a senior, tied for the Most Improved Player Award . John Bronco Evans was selected for the Old Faith- ful Award . All in all, coaches Rod Giske, Tom Smith, Bill Steffon, and the team had a fine season, long to be remembered. Chehalis halfbeck, Alan Allie ISOI, stops Centralia after a short gain. The visiting Crimson and Gray team didn't lose, but they were held to 0 by 0 by the Rams of North Thurston. Both teams scored touchdowns that were nullified by penalties. A spectacular 50 yard pass from Bud Wedin to Alan Allie set up the scoring play, a pass from Wedin to End Tim Wood. However, a l5 yard holding penalty nullified the effort. Earlier, a 7l yard run by a Ram back had been nullified by a clipping penalty. The remainder of the game saw the teams see-saw back and forth with Dave Dowling keeping the Bearcats out of trouble by averaging 30.8 yards on six punts. While the Bearcats were battering Mark Morris of Longview by a 33 to 0 count, Montesano beat North Thurston, giving the Bearcats a cinch for the Central League trophy. Most of the activity centered around the Monarchs' end zone and the Chehalis bench. Good offensive play was turned in by Chuck Denny and the defensive star was Dick Niska. Mark Morris fumbled on their 31 yard line and Bud Wedin took the ball and ran to a 69 yard touchdown. Another drive was cappej by a pass from quarterback Dave Dowling to Tim Wood for a l7 yard touchdown. ln the second quarter tailback Chuck Denny threw 22 yards to Dowling for another TD. ln the third quarter big Mac Arrington went around end for 20 yards for another Chehalis Score. The final touchdown was made on a three yard plunge by Chuck Denny. The Bearcats, after slashing to within the shadow of the Shelton Highclimbers' goal posts 4 times in 3 quarters5 finally pushed one over for a 6 to 0 victory. The victory kept the Bearcats' league record unblemished except for one tie. Fullback Mac Arrington intercepted a pass on the host's 20 yard line with nine minutes to go, and nine plays later carried the ball into the end zone. Most of the yardage was made on the ground, the longest run being only l2 yards. Hallback Dowling punts to Centralia from the Chehalis end zone.
