Many can sit back and say that they are number one but there are others Who are determined to go out and prove it. The 1977-1978 Pioneer football team proved it early by playing pre-season scrim- mages Which was only the begin- ning to becoming the 3A state quarter-finalists. The cross country team was on its feet rtmning all the Way to state with the girls' basket- ball team right behind them finish- ing their season in the district play- offs. Pioneers Take It to the Limit 1977 Quarter-final Champs VVhat came to be known as the 'iBlue Machine kept thousands of fans entertained and on the edge of their bleachers throughout the longest football season and the road to the state semi-finals for the 1977 Pio- neer team. WVith an offense that rolled up 5,734 yards on the turf and in the air, Coach Neal VVilson, who was later named Coach of the Yearh by his peers, took his team to within one game of the state crown. After four months of hard work and determination, the Pioneers compiled a 12-1-1 season. Perhaps the most satisfying victory for the winning Pioneers was the bi-district contest against the Gaines- ville Leopards, who the Blue Streak managed to score 28 points against in the second quarter, having been down by 14. It was the first bi-district trophy to be carried home by a 3A-5 representative in over 15 years, as the Pioneers won the game 5-4 on pene- trations, after a 28-28 deadlock. Atlanta was Boswell's next foe in the ultra modern Mesquite Stadium, and a 24-0 victory carried the Blue team on to meet well-known Brownwood in the state semi-finals. The Brownwood team was the first and last to hand the Pioneers a defeat during 1977, but it was the one that counted, taking away their chances of playing for the state championship after the 42-28 romp. junior Quarterback Danny Henson skippered the team and carried the ball for 1,087 yards and led the district in points scored. With big offensive and defen- sive lines, the Pioneers held what was in front of them, or blocked for those who ran behind them. A true team effort it was that led the team to the best season ever. aj Senior Billy Langley f1ies through the air as he is tripped up by an opponent. hi junior Ricky Corbin fights for extra yardage as he is brought down by the Pioneers' opponents. cl Once again thc Pio- neers show what they are made of iiNumhcr 1 Material. di Senior Paul jacobs and junior Mark Norman congratulate each other after making some more brilliant defensive work during the quarterfinal gainc against Atlanta.
