Derenda French Ask a person to write a simple line on their philoso- phy of life, and what do you get? A variety of hems and haws, and humphs, along with, and in some cases un- believably, the sound of creaking and squeaking of unoiled wheels being put into mental motion. When the senior class was approached with the idea of writing down their ideas of life in simple, short sen- tences, just this situation happened. It was not an un- common sight in government classes to see every stu- dent either studiously chewing an eraser end, staring off into space with a dreamy look in the eyes or pound- ing a desk top in abject frustration. Another thing which seemed to crop up was the vari- ety of excuses used to cover up the fact that chewing an eraser end, staring dreamily into space or pounding in frustration on a desk top has failed to produce the desired results. Many sentences became lost or for- gotten . There were the unusualsg such as My dog ate it or It got mailed to Florida . Should just a little sentence take such mental energy and time? Of course not. But it is interesting to note that: who should take the longest, do the most eraser chewing, the most dreaming, and the most avid desk pounding? None other than the annual staff them-. selves-who thought up the idea in the first place! Identity 41
