K it I , ' iq' X- I F ' 'H ' X Q.- ,f A K ' Thespians A Midsummer Night's Dream was the fall play which members of the Speech and Drama Department began preparing for early in the year. As soon as the production was over, the choir, band members and the drama students began rehearsing for the December musical Alice in Wonderland . The lead role of Alice was protrayed by Boswell's Swedish exchange student Ulla Nassander. Attention turned to the UIL one-act play en- try The Flies in the spring. The play ad- vanced from zone to district to area and then regional competition. Shelly Van Meter was se- lected as Best Actress at all contests all the way through regional and several other cast members received all-star cast honors and hon- orable mention. Students in each division of the UIL individ- ual events qualified for the regional meet at Denton in the spring. The department helped gain over 150 points in the spring meet which was hosted by Boswell, to Win the Sweepstakes trophy. At the state meet freshman Mary Parker won second in poetry interpretation. James Sanders was a state qualifier in persuasive speaking and Kyle Watson and Stephen Sand- ers were qualifiers in debate. Involvement 119

Choir Choir members started their performing early with a welcome concert for parents and faculty at the September open house. A special Madrigal sing- ing group was also a new addition to the department and they represented the school by entertaining at various luncheons and meetings throughout the year in the surrounding area. The choir joined in with the drama students for the production of Alice in Wonderland in the fall and helped with the Thoughts on Stage presen- tation in May. They sponsored the district-wide talent show in March and presented a special music arrangement in the spring. i Involvement 121
