Pioneer Band The Pioneer Sound Machine created quite a sensation at the first football game of the '76- .'77 season by stepping off in sparkling new Duniforms. The uniforms, ordered in early 1976, were de- livered in early August amid much excitement, and were presented at the first game. The band, under the directorship of Mr. John Mason and Mr. Steve White, hit the field under the field leadership of Head Drum Major Beth Ham, and assistant Drum Majors Gary Pitt- man and Cathy Nutt. In the fall, the band marched in the Pioneer Celebration Day Pa- rade, and after much work, they attended the U.I.L. Marching Contest where they received a II rating. In December the band presented a Christmas concert and several member participated in the orchestra for the fall play. At the last home football game Kelly Alvis and David Williams were selected Band Sweetheart' and Beau. The band had four members who made high school All-Region band honors and prese- nted a concert in January. These members 106 Involvement , . .. A f ' l 5-N lfll l 0 i ' ' ' .r' - E Eh: l

were Kelly Alvis, Darla Hard, Beth Ham and Laurie Brooks. Becky Brooks and Pat Vawter qualified for the 9th grade All-Re- gion Band. Several groups of students par- ticipated in the U.I.L. solo and en- semble contest in February, and returned with good results. The Sound Machine then began to seriously prepare for the U.I.L. concert and sightreading contest in March. For two weeks prior to the contest, the band made daily trips to the TCJC Northwest cam- pus to practice in the band hall and auditorium. When the band attended the contest, a total of two I's and four lI's were received. In May the band gave a final spring concert. This concert was the final performance for the graduating seniors as regular members. During graduation cer- emonies the seniors participated in one last song before receiving their diplomas.
