Memories become distorted with time, changing to what one wants to remember, not neces- sarily what really was. In all thoughts of past youth and happi- ness there is a certain feeling of affection. To leave behind what one has loved-or learned to love-can be a traumatic ex- perience. To suddenly not know what tomorrow brings can make a loss of security seem more profound.
