Dear Earle.Marie: New York at lastl After our long iourney from Texas we were glad to arrive at our destination. The first welcome we had was Hey, Taxi? We looked and there stood Guy Pranks. Feature thatl We immediately got in his taxi and said, To the best hotel. We arrived at the hotel and whom do you suppose we saw? Allen Gwynne, the day clerk. He was very surprised to see us and told us that Bill Cranz was pilot of a transatlantic liner. Of course we wanted to go sight-seeing, but at present we were con- cerned only with clothes. Allen directed us to a smart Fifth Avenue Shop. XVe went to select afternoon dresses and were waited on by Bonnie Wade. She said, You must get some lingerie here. We have a very fine buyer. He is, by the way, Claude Nay. Well, that hit like a thunderbolt, Earle. Can you feature Claude a lingerie man? After all these delightful surprises, we needed something to revive us? so we headed for a tea shop. We came upon an oriental one called the BUL- LARD TEA SHOP. We, of course, didn't associate the name with Dallas, but she was the owner. She came and talked to us and told us where quite a few of our old school-mates were. She told us that Mr. and Mrs. Ed White, CDot Landrumj were in the other night for tea. They are quite happy and have three children. Maurine Stokes has turned out to be an insurance sales- woman and has actually sold somebody CFrances Smithj some insurance. After a delightful chat with Dallas, we left the shop. Just as we reached the street, a fire-wagon came tearing down the street. And there whom do you suppose we saw hanging on the back end? 'Speck' Mahan, of course. He waved wildly to us. Right after the fire wagon came an ambulance driving like mad. Burford Scaling was the driver, and he was fairly airing it out. After the excitement died down our attention was attracted by a very novel sign. It had been designed by Norma Lou McKenzie and was adver- tising Nichols' Pickles . fYou remember Jane who was in our Botany class, don't you?j We started back to the hotel, but on the way we saw the fashionable Henderson, Hughes Beauty Shop. We Went in and guess who was running it? Velma and Mary Margaret. They gave us their best operators, Mary Stal- lard and Pauline Graves. Mary told us to be sure to get the latest book, Why Everyone Should Read The Master Key by Ann Evarts Taylor. We had dinner with Ruth Sears, a society girl, and she told us that Cayloma had become famous almost over night on account of her invention, Stay-Blonde. Chester Dalby is mayor of New York, and Douhitt Norman is an automobile saleswoman. She said, too, that Ab and Ferdie are going to make the White Sox this year. We went to a show after dinner to see Dorothy Ann Furnas and Jack Holland in 'AWe're from Texas. Perry Leonard, Music Professor at Col- umbia, and Mary Elizabeth Bonner, gym instructor at a high school, sat in front of us. Mary Elizabeth said that Eleanor Arrington, Margaret Barron, and Bess Crawford were running the A, B, C, Bookshop at Detroit. We Went back to the hotel and when the icewater we sent for arrived. we were surprised to see that C. C. Colton was the bell-hop. Page Z7 4 A W Lucile Hale, the telephone operator, called us at eight o'clock to go to Coney Island with Louise Hartman, dress designer for Elizabeth Delaney's Dress Shop The first person we saw when we got out there was Hugh Kelley, one of the Life Savers. We stopped in the car right in the middle of the road to talk to Hugh and-Oh! we felt a big jar. Frances Sutton and Louise Dickenson, owners of The Eat Shop had bumped into us. A poncce man, LaVaughn Giddings, came up to see if any damage had been done, and as there wasn't any, he let us go on. We went over to The Eat Shop and were served by Juanita Robinson. The Eat Shop Dancers entertained. You would never guess who they were-Martha Volkel, Dorothy Conkling, Isabel Robertson, and Leola Ramfield! Louise Trammell accompanied by Bur- nace Eddings played for their dance. We brought a paper to read ,until it got cooler and read that William Mitchell and Herman McKinley were ready to stage the Heavyweight Championship Fight. We went to look the side shows over and were' attracted by someone yelling Look! Listen! We recognized Joe Story as the someone : so we went in and there was Anna Ruth Ogden as, the strongest woman on Ameri- can soils. Next to the i'Strong Woman was a Hot Dog Stand run by Jack Paris and Everett Grant. When we got back to the hotel there was a telegram informing us that Preston would make his debut in Washington, D C., as Hamlet the next night and as we wanted to see the play, we rushed to the station. Since we were a little early, we went to by some magazines. Jim Trapp was the Maga- zine man I He sold us a book by Pauline Colton called 'Pointers for Dancers. We saw Bessie Albright, the great botanist, leaving for California. Our con- versation was interrupted by, Washington, D. C., and all points south. The train caller was no one but Twink Pendery. Just then a trained pulled in and we saw that the engineer was our old friend Billy Bob Burroughs. Guess who got off the train? Mary Louise Van Vleck. She is one of the chorus girls in the newest shows Then we got on the train. We looked around and saw Stella Bates. She said she had just returned from Europe. Wasn't she lucky? Finally, when we reached Washington, D C., James Cross, Preston's director met us. We enjoyed our ride to the hotel very much. We passed a gorgeous home, which was so beautiful that we could not help remarking about it. We learned from James that it was Effie Cardwell's home. We rested until time for the show. The theater was quite beautiful. We saw Allen Spach, owner of the play house, coming in, Crowds thronged in the doors. The lights went out and a hush fell over the audience. The play had begun! At the end of the play, the house resounded with the audience's vigorous applause. Th next morning, Earle, we read the account of the play, and in the criticism it said that Preston was the most successful actor in years. As we glanced over the ads for the shows, we saw that the Bermingham Twins were being starred as tap dancers. - Just think, Earle, that is everyone in our class. It seems great to think all this happened in such a short time. lsn't this letter a mess? Each of us took turns writing because we knew you would want to hear about everything. We'll write again, Earle, real soon. Give Pem Jr., our love, and tell your husband we're mighty proud of our senator.. Lots of love, Clara and Mary. Page 2 8 ' 4 sEN1oR CLASS WILL We, the members of the class of l928, Stripling High School, being of sound mind and realizing the uncertainty of life and certainty of death, do make and declare this our last will and testament-fnaming the Juniors our sole heirs. Teantsy King, after much urging, has consented to leave his great height to one who needs it very much, Ed Miller. Twink Pendery leaves his slow, easy manner of speaking to John Dallas Thompson. Claude Nay would like for M. C. Knott to have his high, shrill voice. Douthitt Norman leaves her right to be skinny to Rubye Knight. Cayloma Hemsell leaves her dark flowing locks to R. L. Boswell, C. C. Colton leaves his superfluous weight to Robert Horton. NVilliam Cranz leaves his right to go without grease on his hair to William Manning. Ferdie Johnson wants Marshall Cone to take his place in the subs. Mary Bowers leaves her short hair to Christine Weldon. Billy Bob Burroughs leaves his sober-sidedness to Gene Pendery. Bessie Allbright leaves her right to flunk all Math tests to Lucile Tipton. We leave to all the Juniors the scents of the chemistry lab. CSignedj The Seniors of '28. Boys and girls come everyday from far and nigh To learn their math and history, And other things they need. Their Latin is no mystery. And Spanish they can read. Stripling Highf ' Theres not another school like Stripling High. When we are far from you we always sigh for Stripling' High. All the things you've taught us Health and success have brought us, Stripling High! For you we'll keep our hearts free from iniquity We learn the Golden Rule When we are all at school In dear old Stripling High. I'm a Senior from the class from Stripling High Dignified and haughty am I. Sophomores and Juniors all look up to me: The Freshmen all respect me. I know my onions now The teachers all protect me Or I'll kick up a row, I lim a Junior and I think it's something grand I'm sure I cannot tell you why. Mr. Vance and Mr. Brous give me a hand They will not let me stumble Because I must get by 'Twill never do to fumble They'll need Seniors by and by. I Chorus: Chorus: Chorus: I am just a Sophomore but I feel great The Freshmen must bow down to me All our classes can show their independence We feel now that we can show them Because we learn so fast Our groceries we all know them And we'll get there at last. Poor old Fish they're just a football for the rest, They are Mr. St. Clair's proteges, Every Freshman knows that his class is the best. Miss Hunter tries to teach them The things that they should do Miss Brundage tries to reach them And help them all get through. The above song was given by the freshman sextet on class stunt day. A great many people thought it ought to have won first place. Anybody who has, will tell you that it is no easy job. but this is what Mr. St. Clair has done for two years. He has worked hard for us. been behind the team, win or lose, and been fighting to keep the team going. COACH LOWE Mr. Lowe deserves much credit for the show- ing made by Stripling High the last two years. He has taken practically no material and built two winning football teams. Last year he built a bas- ket ball team that ran as smooth as oil. This year he had one that was a thorn in other teams' suc- cess. He has a large num- ber out for baseball. and it looks as if they will make a winning team. He is a real man: he wins without boasting and loses without excusing. THE MANAGERS f S COACH HAYDEN You don't hear much from Miss Hayden, but you know it's the empty wagon that makes the noise. She is a pal to all the girls. is always working to make them strong and healthy. She built a basket ball team this year that was a win- ning one. Page 7 6 ww HUGHES KING Would.you ever guess that Teantsy was so full of pep? We couldn't imag- ine it until he was elected pep squad leader. Since that he has surely shown his pep in yelling for all the ball games and leading them to many victories. Page 7 7 PEP LEADERS CHRISTINE BROWN Christine Wo r ke d with a group of girls many days after school to form a pep squad that well rep- resented the school in all the athletic activi- ties. Strip- ling is again the champion of the class B division. The boys started the year off right by defeating Poly, a team in the class A division. The scrap was I I to 6 The team showed that it had worked hard, and had not worked in vain. The team worked like a machine without a cog missing. The football boys carried the work on through the rest of the year. In class B they were defeated only once and were victorious six times. It is a honor to have such fine boys and real sports to carry the banner of the W. C. Stripling High School on through the years to come. It is also an honor to have such a fine coach as Mr. Lowe to put the boys through a good clean game. Page 8 O if 1- .av l l y l FERDIE JOHNSON l Captain Ferdie was a per- fect cog in the wheel, a good sportsman, and an able captain. He kept up the fight- ing spirit of the team and was always on the job. CHARLES PRIDDY Center Charles, an accu- rate passback, helped to give the backfield a good start. He was noted for sailing through the line and downing a man in his tracks. He has been elected captain for next year. Page 8 I 'X '-- L MAR1oN PENDERY Quarter Twink went into the game with undy- ing determination' to win and was a con- sistent ground gainer and an accurate passer. - JOHNNY THOMPSON Half Johnny was an all round backfielder. He was a good runner, passer, receiver. and tackle. GRANVILLE ALLEN Guard This was Allen's first year, but he played like a veteran. He left a hole in the line wh-en it was needed. JEWELL HOWELL Guard Jewell is an old reliable, always doing his best anfd more. Jewell will be back next year. AB WHITE End Ab pulled the ball out of the ether and was a real red-blood- ed fighter. H PEMBERTON ROGERS Half Pemberton was a bag of steel nerves and never gave up spirit. He was an excellent line smashes: and very dependable. Page. 82 CLAUDE NAY Tackle Claude was a hard fighter and always did his best. The sdhool lost him at at mid-term. if ED WHITE End Ed was a sensa- tional tackler and in- variably got his man. Page 83 MILO NlAHAN Half Milo was a swift and agile side-stepper and mighty hard to tackle. HENRY BROOKS Tackle Henry was little, but heavy. Henry didn't wait for his man: he went after him. Henry will be back next year. ROY BOSWELL Half R. L. was a good line plunger and ex- cellent for receiving. passes. He was al- ways in the play. EUGENE PENDERY Gene was a sure tackle and always made his hole for the backfield. MARSHALL CONE Half Marshall was a beautiful runner and made many beautiful tackles. Once through the line meant a sure touchdown Page 84?- W oxfts ofher Sp BUYS' BASKETBALL Coach Lowe built a basketball team this year that were not champions, but a thorn in the side of the other teams when it came to winning a game. The team, although it lost repeatedly, fought on with the same old spirit that W. C. Stripling High School is noted for. They kept the flag up and never let it touch the ground. It is not the best team that Wins, but the team that can lose without excusing and win without boasting. The W. C. Stripling student body is proud of the set of boys that represent them in bas- ketball, and may they have better luck next year. Page 86 GIRLS' BASKETBALL The Stripling High girls' basketball team had .another suc- cessful season. They won the Class B. League Championship and showed up to advantage against Class A. teams. Ruth Sears was captain of the squad of players this year and proved a capable lead- er. The seven girls that lettered and were awarded the S were: Bessie Albright, Christine Brown, Grace Grafft, Bernice Herndon, Ruth Sears, Virginia Stovall, and Charlie Edith True. Special mention should be given to the substitutes who prac- ticed with the team all season and who made possible the success of our team. Squad members were: Faye Smyre, Blanche Grace, Leola Ramfield, Margaret Watkins, Elizabeth Turner, Ethel Sphuler, Anna Ruth Ogden, Florence Wells, Marjorie Motter, and Norma Lou McKenzie. Page 87 GYM CLASSES There is a great variety in the program of the gym classes. The following phases are covered throughout the year: marching, cal- isthenics, track, volleyball, baseball games, and certain phases of hygiene, aiming at the formation of definite health habits. The gym class championship in each sport is determined, and this has proved of great interest to all of the participants. During this week the Mother and Daughter Banquet is given at the Texas Hotel. It is designed to bring about closer union of mother and daughter, and to teach the mother something of her daughter's work as a Girl Reserve. Last year our banquet was full of pep. Girl Reserve loyalty songs, camp songs, and toasts were given. This year the Dad and'Daughter Banquet has been inaugurated. The Girl Reserves have participated in many functions at the Y. W. C. It was founded in the earlier part of 1927 by five boys who are our charter members. At that time the membership consisted of about ten members, and since then has grown to about twenty-five members. We hope to increase that number to about forty by the end of the year. It is not our object to increase our membership as much as possible. We obtain only the best, finest, and youngest boys available. XVe deem it im- portant that We obtain the younger boys, whose ideals are yet to be molded. Our executive board with the consent of the members has passed a law that a member must be a freshman in order to join. Page 100 THE ORCHESTRA Our high school orchestra was reorganized at the beginning of the fall term with a membership of fifteen. At mid-term the membership was in- creased to twenty. The young musicians have appeared on several programs during the year under the successful direction of Mrs. Mildred Buttermore. Our orchestra is also a part of the All-City High School Orchestra, an organization directed by Captain Wilfred Wilson, which is to make several appearances in and around Fort Worth. Stripling is very proud that one of her young violinists was chosen as a member of the National High School Orchestra and Summer Camp, which is to meet in Chicago this year. She is concert master in our Orchestra-Miss Louise Trammell. Page 101 'lv . -' ,r THE BOYS OCTET The Octet was formed at the beginning of the fall term of 1927 under the very able di- rection of Mrs. Mildred Buttermore. The boys were selected for ability to sing parts as well as for quality of voice. Because of Mrs. Buttermore's untiring efforts a very good Octet was developed. The young singers did not win the applause of their audience without many hours of practice. The boys rehearsed before and after school besides the regular work done in the chorus class. Their singing before a number of audiences, particularly the student body. resulted in increased enthusiasm for others to take up this work. This was noticed especial- ly at the beginning of the spring term of 1928, when the enrollment was increased to eighty, this being the largest number of students ever enrolled for chorus work in the history of the school Stripling High has the only boy Octet inthe Fort Worth High Schools, and we are proud to know that Stripling leads all the other schools in this Work. We hope to see some of our boys become finished singers in time. . Many thanks are due Mrs. Buttermore, and we all hope she will be even more successful with the chorus classes to come. O. Mclntyrej 1, Diary of the Modern Pepys: ll P February 20th: '4 'P 1 1 Arrived on our campus at eight-thirty, guiltily to hop up those wet I and shining marble steps under a storm of non-benevolent gestures from a J' li needless lookout. So on to English and there to labor with the lingo of H 'E those allegorical Angles. The second period and up to honor study hall, profusely to ponder H ll over increasing assignments. And deeply engrossed in my labors when some it 'I weary Webster pipes up for an incessant inning of babbling blues, which i 'I grows to be very monotonous. The period ends If V On the third floor is a group of staunch Striplinites thronged about I I, the bulletin board-and seem greatly amused, as was I. when I saw La I, Vaughn Gidding's clever conception of a coming football clash. Only by 'I rapidly displacing the prevailing atmosphere do I arrive in time to enjoy 1 one of Mr. St. Clair's engaging Civics classes. I The fourth period and so to math, where Miss Parker spends a full , 6 sixty minutes testing the dexterity of our mathematical wrinkle. The daily ,I echo of the study hall enroute to lunch. What's the hurry and why the 4 1, rush? Yet we all do it. ,J 1' Noon and dip down into the Hoskin's Hash-House and find more I girl friends locating in the boy's cafeteria. They seek good company: so 1 ll they are allowed to remain. Plop! Crash! Clatter! That green grandee, it who thought Mr. Maxey was principal slyly proving Newton's law.. He dropped the dishes. Thoughts while strolling: The click of high boots on the tile floor. Those suits plus open collars. Contraband gum. The cautious rounding of blind corners. Officious observers. What ever became of those glass fountain pens? The Model Living Room with homestead hearth. Guard- E 5' ians of the Law. N To chapel where the Bible is read. Then on to chemistry and there learn much under the capable instruction of Miss Behrens. Enroute to the last when met by Billie Cranz, the Senior Class presi- dent, and Allen Gwynne smilingly merging from a scholastic cell.. Comes Mr. Vance greatly worried about something. The rush to Mr. Maxey's drawing class to be among those present. There, with instruments and ink, i we strive to get a slant on life. And so to an end of a valued day among the weighty walls of Stripling Hi. I -0'1'7 7 T:: 'T 'tixl l 16:13 :-ft 57 f'i'Il 1331-'L T ll .1'?L'I K-ill I+ 'H' !
