ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The enormous task of compiling a cruisebook of this calibre could only be the result of the combined efforts of a dedicated and talented staff. Commander Tom Crockett, USN Ret., of JOSTENS PUBLISHING CO. showed us the best deal. LT. Randy Smith, DC, the P.A.O. until Nov. 1984, negotiated the contract. A word of thanks is also in order for those individuals who contributed their personal photos. And, of course, what would this book be without you, the crew of U.S.S. Vulcan? You are the stars of the show. We hope you will enjoy these memories for years to come. OFFICER ADVISOR LCdr. Reflections Oh what a lonely place to be Out here upon the Arabian sea. Achored fast, no place to go No cooling rain or freezing snow. My love is many miles away I miss her more each passing day. The mail is slow, unsure to come We work all day until we're done. A sandy island is all we see With not a trace of greenery. The bright blue waters clear and deep Down deep below mens souls must sleep. Soon however we'll leave this mound As Vulcan will be homeward bound. Through Suez Canal and old Red Sea Across the Med and we'll be free. The dark Atlantic swells to ride And then my loved ones by my side. Home at last across the waves These thoughts will soon become a haze. And if in times not yet to be Describ Masirah is asked of me, My true response must always be Oh what a lonely place to be, By IM1 Gregory P. Urban
