LCDR DOUGLAS SHAMBURGER COMMAND MASTER CHIEF ENCM LANNY WHITE 5 VULCAN HISTORY ■jT USS VULCAN was the first of the modern Repair Ships. Her keel was laid on 16 December 1939 at the Camden, New Jersey Yard of the New York Shipbuilding Company. Commissioning of VULCAN was held on the 16th of June 1941, at which time VULCAN joined the Atlantic Fleet. Soon after, VULCAN was pressed into service during World War II. She participated in the invasion of Normandy and the bombardment of Cherbourg. During the war, USS VULCAN received the European-African-Middle Eastern and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medals. In April, 1946, VULCAN returned to the United States and the Atlantic Fleet. She was sent to the Carribean to provide repair services to the US warships in the Cuban Quarrantine in 1962. On 1 November 1978, VULCAN became the first Naval ship to have women assigned as part of the crew, other than the Navys' hospital ships. In September 1979, VULCAN deployed to the Mediterranean, the first ship to deploy with women, and the first of VULCANS deployments in nearly thirty years. In 1980, she cruised the North Atlantic while taking part in TEAMWORK 80 , a NATO exercise which combined ships and aircraft from the US, United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands, France, and West Germany. 1982 will be remembered as the year of the the Overhaul. After 13 months in Boston that would add many more years of useful service life, the tender braved one of the fiercest of winter storms off the Atlantic Coast in her return to Norfolk. As 1984 began, Vulcan cruised to the Carribean once again in support of READEX 84. In October, she sailed from Norfolk for a six month Mediterranean-lndian Ocean deployment. ■ USS VULCAN is assigned to Service Group Two. She provides a wide variety of repairs, supplies, medical and dental and religious services. VULCAN NEST VULCAN weighs 16,245 tons and she is 530 feet long, her beam is 73 feet and draft 25 feet. Her speed is 19.5 knots and she has a crew of 725, including 130 women. 1985 i 1942 7 Final Preparations Before 9 THE INDIAN OCEAN THE FINAL FRONTIER IO TREK This is the voyage of the Repair Ship VULCAN ... Her six month mission at sea: To render services to the Indian Ocean Battle Group ... and to boldly go where no other 43 year old tender has gone before ... REPAIR IF WE CAN'T FIX IT, IT AIN'T BROKE LCDR MICHAEL DALEY LCDR NOAH JACKSON Qr ;.s 0X0 o% On any workday, the Repair Office is a hive of ringing telephones and non-stop in an out traffic. This office is the axle of the Vulcans repair activity and without it the Repair Department would be a hazy nightmare. With eight divisions to direct, the Repair Office must supervise all material planning and procurement, scheduling of repair work and maintain an accurate manhour accounting system. In short, the Repair Department is the business end of the Vulcans tending ability. 11 RO DIVISION PN3 ANTHONY FLAGG MRCS EDWARD TAYLOR ETC EDWARD HALL IMC GARY MILLER MR2 JUDIE HARRISON EMC ARMAND Crossing-the-line is a fine old Naval tradition that still finds a place among all Naval vessels. It is a day when the mysteries of the Seven Seas and Davey Jones Locker are revealed to the pollywogs as they cross the Equator for the first time, and are initiated into the challenges of the oceans and the traditions of the seas. The most veteran of the Shellback, YNC Mason, assumed the role of Neptunus Rex, and presided over the Royal Court, HTCM Elm acted as Davey Jones. Each pollywog was brought before these Supreme Shellbacks to face such serious charges as skylarking, liberty-hounding, and boon-doggling: and some even served as members of the short-lived Pollywog Liberation Army . After meeting the Royal Mermaid, RM2 Froggett; the Royal Baby; BM1 Newman; and the Royal Dentist, Mrcs Taylor and HTC Hangsleben to name a few; each pollywog had to answer to ALL members of the Royal Court before achieving their final status as a time honored SHELLBACK. 112 k SHELLBACK INDOC: IT DON'T GET NO BETTER THAN THIS! Achored fast, no place to go No cooling rain or freezing snow. My love is many miles away I miss her more each passing day. The mail is slow, unsure to come We work all day until we're done. A sandy island is all we see With not a trace of greenery. The bright blue waters clear and deep Down deep below mens souls must sleep. Soon however we'll leave this mound As Vulcan will be homeward bound. Through Suez Canal and old Red Sea Across the Med and we'll be free. The dark Atlantic swells to ride And then my loved ones by my side. Home at last across the waves These thoughts will soon become a haze. And if in times not yet to be Describ Masirah is asked of me, My true response must always be Oh what a lonely place to be, By IM1 Gregory P. Urban ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The enormous task of compiling a cruisebook of this calibre could only be the result of the combined efforts of a dedicated and talented staff. Commander Tom Crockett, USN Ret., of JOSTENS PUBLISHING CO. showed us the best deal. LT. Randy Smith, DC, the P.A.O. until Nov. 1984, negotiated the contract. A word of thanks is also in order for those individuals who contributed their personal photos. And, of course, what would this book be without you, the crew of U.S.S. Vulcan? You are the stars of the show. We hope you will enjoy these memories for years to come. OFFICER ADVISOR LCdr.
