The stimulation of more interest in sports and the promotion of better sportsmanship throughout the school are the main objectives of the Varsity Club. Meeting weekly, the Varsity Club is composed of senior high school boys that have been members or managers of varsity sports. To give all high school pupils a chance to participate in competitive sports the Varsity Club organized a track meet in the spring. They made posters to advertise the football games and pre- sented pep rallies at the beginning of the football and basketball seasons to introduce the players to the student body. They held an evening basket- ball festival at the end of the season with the varsity playing the junior varsity and the faculty playing other students. Every year the club repairs the benches for the athletic teams and participates in the gym demonstration by presenting some humorous fea- ture event. They made and donated a plaque which records the most valuable player for each sport every year. They plan to remodel the in- field of the baseball diamond in the near future. The club purchased black and white jackets for its members with the name of the club and the blackbird insignia afhxed. Advised by Coach Harold Mead, the Varsity Club has functioned smoothly under president Ed Meilinger, vice- president Carl Williams, secretary jake Herzog and treasurer Mike Munyan.

clfpcricnc tt both lfictary The 1956 football squad, under the direction of Coach Kenneth George, played with amazing spirit and determination throughout the season, despite the fact that they had the disappointment of losing all but one of their hard-fought games. There were only three returning lettermen, one of whom was Captain Milton Batesg but the team members learned quickly the importance of co- operation and teamwork. The night football game at Ravena on Halloween contributed ex- citement to the game and many of the second and third string players gained valuable experience in the annual Meatball Bowl which was held near the end of the season. The regulars as well as the first year men found the practice long and tiring but this seemed worthwhile when it came to carrying the pigskin at gametime. FOOTBALL TEAM Front Row, left to rigbtf R.
