Now we are fast approaching the time for our graduation, and we suddenly realize that our school days and the companionship and security which they held are drawing to a close. In this, our Torch, we record by means of picture and word those care- free days of the past, the memorable events of yesterday, and those .... INTRODUCTION SENIORS .... ....,.. ACTIVITIES ..... ' Z ' ' fx . 3 A During our high school career, one person served as our homeroom teacher and class advisor for three years. Many of our class took courses from him for four years in mathematics, biology, driver education and in- troduction to business. As advisor he aided in planning and directing activities for our class ranging from dances and fund-raising events to the climactic Washing- ton trip. As teacher he worked diligently to present thorough and interesting material to our classes. He challenged us to reason and think logically. In both capacities he showed interest in us and gave his time freely. In appreciation of his effort we dedicate the 1957 Torch to Werner W. Berglas. pa. ., z+f'f 2.. W . fwiify za 1 , i, a. Bouton, our supervising principal, has witnessed for thirty-six years the maturing of many classes including ours. He has given his full cooperation and understanding with our class problems and activities, and we know he will do as much for future classes. We owe much to the faculty of all grades for their efforts as teachers and sponsors. We hope that the future will show in us their job well done. We acknowledge the constant and untiring service to the school and community of our school board, a group of men dedicating long hours of their time to directing the functions of the school and carrying out plans for the future. l GRADE FACULTY Front Row, left to right: Sitting: Mrs. Etheridgeg Mrs. Prestong,Mrs, Blessingg Mrs. Morang Mrs. Pafundag Mrs. Bashfordg Mrs. VanOlindag Second Row: Standingf Miss Josling Miss Wrightg Miss Koslikg Mrs. Farrellg Mr. Stottg Mr. Farrell. , f fi. .f fff -9 1-1 fm pi' W fl fit' V gm' ., .,,.fw.M V ., ..- ' L Q V '-V-4x..,., - ..f-. STUDENT COUNCIL At the bi-weekly meetings of the Student Council the representatives and executive commit- tee, under the guidance of Mr. Kenneth George, discussed and tried to solve the problems which were brought before them concerning the stu- dent body. President Bruce Ackerman brought the meeting to order and secretary Mary Beth Frol.li:h and treasurer Donna Lee Kennah made their reports to the Student Council. The Constitution Committee with chairman William Batchelder completed the revision of the constitution which was approved by the Council. The Assembly Committee under the leadership of vice-president Michael Munyan organized all assembly programs. The Canteen Committee under the chairman- ship of Carol johnson planned the budget, as- sumed the responsibility for all canteen activities, and cleaned and conditioned the canteen, which included the refinishing of the canteen Hoor. Improving Inter-School Relations was our topic for the A. S. S.C.D. Wlorkshop in which four representatives headed by Mary Beth Frohlich pre- sented and led a discussion concerning this prob- lem. In order to improve school spirit a committee, led by Emily Mader, was organized and school pennant were sold at home games. The Holly Roll was sponsored by the Student Council during the Christmas vacation for the students and alumni. Throughout the year the Student Council strove for school betterment and understanding between the students and faculty. actizfitics af the sfudmi bawdy 7 . The stimulation of more interest in sports and the promotion of better sportsmanship throughout the school are the main objectives of the Varsity Club. Meeting weekly, the Varsity Club is composed of senior high school boys that have been members or managers of varsity sports. To give all high school pupils a chance to participate in competitive sports the Varsity Club organized a track meet in the spring. They made posters to advertise the football games and pre- sented pep rallies at the beginning of the football and basketball seasons to introduce the players to the student body. They held an evening basket- ball festival at the end of the season with the varsity playing the junior varsity and the faculty playing other students. Every year the club repairs the benches for the athletic teams and participates in the gym demonstration by presenting some humorous fea- ture event. They made and donated a plaque which records the most valuable player for each sport every year. They plan to remodel the in- field of the baseball diamond in the near future. The club purchased black and white jackets for its members with the name of the club and the blackbird insignia afhxed. Advised by Coach Harold Mead, the Varsity Club has functioned smoothly under president Ed Meilinger, vice- president Carl Williams, secretary jake Herzog and treasurer Mike Munyan. clfpcricnc tt both lfictary The 1956 football squad, under the direction of Coach Kenneth George, played with amazing spirit and determination throughout the season, despite the fact that they had the disappointment of losing all but one of their hard-fought games. There were only three returning lettermen, one of whom was Captain Milton Batesg but the team members learned quickly the importance of co- operation and teamwork. The night football game at Ravena on Halloween contributed ex- citement to the game and many of the second and third string players gained valuable experience in the annual Meatball Bowl which was held near the end of the season. The regulars as well as the first year men found the practice long and tiring but this seemed worthwhile when it came to carrying the pigskin at gametime. FOOTBALL TEAM Front Row, left to rigbtf R.
