Dedication CHARLES A. HIGHSMITH I, the writer of this dedication, constitute only one of the human elements who fall in line to dedicate this book to a statesman and crusader. When years have gone by, and when what is prologue is past, we shall still remember Charles A. I-Iighsmith, a product of Cheyney State Teachers College, and possessor of a masters in science from the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania. We bestow upon him the title of statesman because of the diplomatic way in which he puts across his opinions. We, the senior class, on all occasions have found the opinions of Mr. Highsmith very reliable and advantageous to the progress which we have made during the Past school year. It is this girder of his personality that has brought us through the pitfalls to success as members of the senior class. Dressed in his armor of humor and wit, along with a dynamic personality, we picture Mr. Highsmith a crusader who has made our -high-school days the best days of our lives. As our leader he has dealt with problems, both pro and con and balanced our decisions so that they would be an asset rather than a hindrance to us in our future years. Many times he has in conversation aroused the spot of admiration in our hearts, and it is this fond admiration for him that has held him high in our estimation and has set himself as an example for us to follow in years to come. As we leave Voorhees this year there will be imprinted within our hearts and minds a replica of an individual who has demanded recognition through his gallant efforts as an educator. It is to our beloved sponsor, Mr. Highsmith, that we dedicate this bookg although it is only a mere thanks to one who has through his achievements inspired us. In conclusion, as an expression of our sincere devotion, we have said before, rn a worthy cause, and worthy man, we dedicate this, the first TIGER 1949. 5

I wish to thank and congratulate the sponsors and the several members of the class for publishing this annual. I believe it is the first in the history of the institu- tion and certainly the first during my administration. Your efforts will make it pos- sible for those who come after you and the many graduates and former students of Voorhees to share with us the many interesting experiences of the school year 1948-1949. It is the purpose of Voorhees to be a Christian institution in the sense that its total program is motivated by Christian ideals and principles, and is directed toward the development of competent, cultured, Christian persons. The institution seeks to help each student, in the light of his individual abilities, interests and needs, to become such a person. We believe that such objectives, adequately analyzed and implemented, will have the enthusiastic approval of those who are interested in our well being and will also attract individuals who are interested in attending an institution with this pattern of purposes. It is very necessary that you keep in mind the fact that whatever you may do, and wherever you may go your ALMA MATER is judged. Therefore, give to the world the best you can give. Cordially yours, EARL H. MCCLENNEY, SR. President i6
