' f7 l-ll-V DEVELCDPS GCDGD CITIZENS As it stands on the platform of Pure thoughts, pure words, and pure actions the Hi-Y seeks to build, in their relationships with fellow students and each other, a keener under- standing of this, its poignant slogan. Each year the boys hold new elections and choose officers to lead them throughout the term in their meetings which take place the second and fourth Monday night of every month. One of the main purposes of this organization is to strengthen the bodies of the members and to promote co-ordination between clean thinking and clean living. They are success- ful in this, especially through their recent formation of a basketball team which challenges other Hi-Y's and clubs in clean competitive sport. At the bi-monthly meeting there is frequently a speaker who chooses his topic to coincide with the general interests of the boys. It is the duty of the program and meeting chairmen to be efficient in planning the procedure for these Monday nights. Often they sponsor service projects for servicemen and women, always considering where their assistance is most valuable and keeping in mind their alumni now serving our country. Social events are imperative to every high school boy's life and that has not been forgotten in the Y's Well rounded program. Included in the line up is usually one Date Night to which every member is asked to escort a girl of his choice. There are also several other informal mixed gatherings throughout the semester. It is generally agreed by members and outsiders that the Hi-Y is a really worthwhile club. Thomas and Mr. Arthur Knopinski. The students, along with the teachers participated in an extravaganza ot student and teacher abilities. The high spots of the evening took the form of a Gay Ninetieg Review from the operetta, Floradora, and Delores Maile and Pauline Schuberth portraying the famed Dolly Sisters. Such songs as Tell Me Pretty Maiden , and The Streets of Old New York , high- lighted their delightful performance. Dressed in authentic costumes The Dolly Sisters and the Floradora Boys and Girls played a great part in the success of the evening. Very proud were we to have Lillian Chookaszian famed contralto as our guest of the even- ing. Both Miss Chookaszian and our guest pianist Miss Harriet Hakanson were former stu- dents of Von Steuben. In the lighter vein was the taculty barbershop quartet consisting of Thomas Smith, Otie Kerley, Edwin Mattoon, Richard Mitchell and Anthony Geisert at the piano. The songs You Tell Me Your Dreams, I'll Tell You Mine , and ,'She Was More To Be Pitied Than Censuredu, really established the quartet as the success of the evening. They stopped only long enough to listen to Ioyce Mauer sing and portray Sweet Rosie O'Grady. After which she sang and played her own songs with a little help from the boys , After a great ovation the quartet and Ioyce sang and danced two more songs which kept the audience in a constant uproar. Clirnaxing the evenings entertainment was the combined choirs' stirring rendition of Tannhauser's Hail Bright Abode , directed by Mr. Thomas. CULTURE Because French has con- tributed so much to our culture, and so much to our language, the students of last year's French I class felt that they were entering upon a new adventure. The advanced French 3 class has organized a French Club which meets during class and discusses the outstanding fea- tures of French culture. They are getting both enjoyment and interest from these lively class sessions. Our chances looked slim at first, but as the season progressed the team steadily improved. The league season began with the Kangaroos losing a close contest to Lane Tech 4-2. This was followed with an overwhelming victory over Marshall 8-1, and two decisions over Schurz by scores of 8-2 and 2-U. Again we encountered our perpetual jinx Lane Tech and lost a thriller 4-2. Going into the last league game at Marshall, and needing a victory to enter the playoffs, Steuben kickers blasted out a 4-U victory over the be- wildered Commandoes. Going into the playoffs the Kangaroos faced a powerful aggregation from Tilden Tech and won 4-l due largely to Kenny Goldberg's two goals. In the final game with Crane Tech goals by Norm Wisher and Iinx Kalmin handed the Kangaroos their first soccer title 4-2 and the completion of their most successful season. SWIM LEADERS PRGVE THEIR WCDRTI-I What group make the biggest splash in the school? You guessed it-the swim leaders. The swim leaders have been doing a line job tor a number of years, teaching and improving the swimming ol Steuben girls. The leaders are under the supervision of Mrs. Harrell Their commander is Marianne Ehrlich. Second in command tor- rnerly was alumni Thelma Dubow and now is Lita Wasserman. Other top officers are Lieutenantg Marilyn Nelson, Pearl Gerson, Renee Levinson, and Beverly Zabin. The Ensigns are: Iune Kaplan, lune Kramer, Lorraine Dressler, and Pauline Schubert. Everything is ship-shape with bright red suits and white Caps. Every girl is skilled in all strokes and most are good divers. Some ot their tanciest divers are: Lorraine Dressler, Iune Kramer and Francine Barnett. For a smooth dolphin and sun fish watch: Iune Kramer, Iune Kaplan, Ruth Glick, Sally Hirsch, Beverly Zabin and Arlene Eisenstein. Last semester, a special water ballet was given for the entertain- ment ot both swim and gym leaders. A solo was given by Muriel Hirsch, one of our best swimmers an alumnus. A beautifully coordif nated trio was made up ot Iune Kaplan, Iune Kramer and Beverly Zabin. Afterwards there was a tree-for-all swim that proved to be fun-for-all. l4l 1. isx P J- ffm- f '12 'M-N H . Under the supervision of Miss Growe, physical education teacher, the girls have an executive board. council, bowling league, horse back riders, locker guards, intra-mural classes and class secretaries. All the girls are competent able workers that can take orders as well as give them. The G.A.A. board provides opportunities for girls with executive abilities while the gym and swim leaders give girls a chance to lead classes without a teacher's assistance, thus furthering their leadership powers. Every event stresses sportsmanship. The competitive sports offer a chance to play clean and hard. The Freshie socials, each semester established a friendship between girls entering the school and those already here. Yes, the Girls' Athletic Association functions smoothly as it brings the giris of all semesters together, some belonging for enjoyment, others working for letters, but all joining hands and working in unison-for health and good sports. Ping Pong places tops among the mcmy activities sponsored by the G.A.A. and still ranks ai the top of the list. This game is always exciting for players as well as the referees, for they never know what is going to happen next. lt's a toss up. Yes, it surely is a toss up to determine which game is the more popular with the girls in intramurals. Basket- ball seems to be tops among the sports with volleyball, cmd baseball running a close sec- ond, Gym secretaries see that it is always smooth sailing, for the classes and teachers. These capable girls are really Iills of all Trades. The girls can do cmy thing from taking attend- ance, to leading classes. A. A. MEMBERS ARE ACTIVE BOWLING LEAGUE The G.A.A. bowlers can be depended on for strikes and spares every time. The girls bowl at Rollaway Bowling Al- leys every Friday, and are under the leadership of Fern Schneider, chairman, cmd Anita Bach, co-chairman. G.A.A. bars and points are given at the end oi the semester to the girls who attend regularly. HORSE BACK RIDERS The G.A.A. horse back riders can be seen every Tuesday, cantering down the Lincoln Park bridle paths on the finest horses, Christensen's Riding Academy has to offer. They handle their horses well under the guidance of Audry Ander- son, Chairman, and Alice Riikind, co- chairman, two very able equestriennes. 145 LOCKER GUARDS It is the duty oi the locker guards to keep the locker room empty during class periods. They do a fine job, seeing that lockers are not left open and that scraps oi paper are not thrown on the floor. The girls are under the direction oi Mrs. Matson.
