Everyone b lf gan to ask What can I do to help? Thousands of our boys entered the service and many have already made the supreme sacrifice for what they believed were the .four freedoms. War bond drives and rationing have caused people to realize that this is to be a long and bitter War. Blood plasma, which gives life to the wounded, has generously been donated by civilians who understand the gallantry and sacrifices our soldiers are going through to preserve and protect the nation they love. Your 'hearts are young, your willingness to do good somehow seems to your leadership will be the kind that will help to leave its old ways and go forth to new paths happiness. SI' At Von Steuben we have tried to provide room grow in a place where each one might stretch his soul, out to those heights which beckon him, whether they be the of science, the crags of literature, the lofty reaches of music or the firm plateaus of athletics. If in these years spent here there has awakened within you the desire to grow in stature mentally and spiritually, you will have been building toward these places of leadership which await you and which you will probably be called on to fill. Our trust and faith in your ability go with you. X XX SS ZR The main office of Von Steuben owes its streamline efficiency for the most part to Miss Eleanor Swartz and Miss Mary Schwartz. ln spite of their many duties as secretaries to Miss Shea and Mr. Marsh they are always cheerfully prepared to assist a puzzled student or perform an extra task. There are few students in Von Steuben who do not consider Mr. Marsh, our assistant principal, a Very good friend. A warm heart and cheer- ful disposition plus a real interest in each individual student account for this. His deep understanding and thoughtful suggestions make a talk with him unforgettable. The students who shirk their work and classes are advised by Mrs. Timmons, the school's truant officer. She has helped young people for many years and therefore understands their difficul- ties. When a student becomes truant, aid is offered by discussing his problem and advising wisely both the student and his parent. , , ,,, X , , M X x,xxx i -X XX:MX 3 x ' 'Q fl: wt XXXX .,,.. The entire group meets once a month in the civic room to discuss parent and teacher problems and offer suggestions to remedy them. Throughout the year the members sponsor various activities, the- proceeds ot which go toward a fund for the betterment of the school. For the last two years they have assisted in sending Christmas gift boxes to former Von Ste-ubenites who are now serving their country in the various branches of the service at home and abroad. Many a boy on a faraway battlefield has been cheered by this little remembrance from his alma mater. Mrs. Abraham Blum is the capable president of this splendid organization which has brought about a friendly relation between parent and teacher. It is through this mutual understanding and co-operation that we can acquir the greatest value from our educati U81 G onal system. f ,o,,0Di,M, 7 QMQQA U Wi Graduates If President .............................. 'F I 1 OUR PRESENT FRESHIES This is the present Freshie class, but it is also the class of lanuary 1948. Most of these boys and girls are now 13 or 14 years old, finishing their first semester in high school. Some have done very fine workp others will need to get into stride and improve their stand- ings. All have made new friends and had new expe- riences. They have learned that courtesy and de- pendability are two very fine character traits and that loyalty includes one's home, one's school and one's country. 51142 THE CLASS OF IANUARY. 1948 The leaders of the class of Ianuary l948 are seated in this auditorium. We do not know them now, but the next three years will bring them forward. We hope that as the members of this class grow in age and stature, they will also grow in mental ability, in poise and confidence in friendship and loyalties, in wisdom and character. We welcome our newest members to their first annual. msg FRESHMEN Row 1-Siegel, Muriel: Sieqal, Richard: Sielas, Robert: Siff,VFrances: Silveberq, Lois: Silverman, Ierome: Singer, Roberi: Scott, Shelton: Skolnick, Yetta. BAND PUTS VON STEUBEN ON TOP Through the concerted efforts of Di- rector Charles H. Schell and the mem- bers of the organization, the Von Steuben Band brought distinction to the school by Winning a superior rating in the city-wide band contest. The contest was the culmination of a series of band activities, which included participation in a program during Pearl Harbor week and a number of patriotic events. On May 10, the Band played for the ROTC Inspection drill at Roosevelt High School, and, on May 24 and 25, the organization joined with the Orches- tra and Choir to help make successful the annual Spring Music Festival in the school auditorium. STEUBEN ORCHESTRA AND DIRECTOR SCORE AGAIN Under the tireless leadership of Director Charles H. Schell, the Von Steuben Orchestra put itself and the school on top again by achieving a rating- of GOOD in the- annual city-Wide contest held on May 10 at Harrison High School. All during the year the Orchestra has done its part to make entertaining and impressive numerous programs such as the Student Council, Honor Society, Freshman Orientation, and Armistice Day assemblies, the Spring Music Festival and Operetta, and various P.T.A. meetings. The 4A students will remember the Orchestra especially for the stir- ring role it played in the Commencement program. fini Qur Boys and Girls Can Sing , . ff ef! The Symphonic Choir, with its full complement ot 60 voices charm the school and community by their voices raised in song. Headed by an Executive Board, the Council meets weekly to discuss important school problems. Officers of the Council are elected by the entire student body in a democratic style. A one hundred dollar scholarship, the first of a series of scholarships, was awarded to a worthy student to enable him to enter college. The Council has supported the school in its war effort by sponsoring a Victory Day, to encourage the purchase of War bonds and stamps. The drive Was climaxed by an enter- taining Victory Day Social. An Orientation assembly for the Freshmen has also been presented by the governing body. The purpose was to better acquaint them with the functions of the Student Council and the other activities the school has to offer them. Miss Eona DeVere is the encouraging sponsor of the Council. THOSE WHO SERVE-OUR SERVICE SOCIETY To the students of Von Steuben the name Service Society is a byword. The name itself represents its meaning . . . Service. This society is the extra-curricular activity which rewards the students for all extra school work done outside of the classroom. The group differs from any other school club in the fact that twenty-five school service points are needed for a student to be recognized as a member. These members all strive for higher goals before reaching graduation, the highest being the award of a Von Steuben Major Letter for two hundred points, the achievement of which is very difficult. Only one student so far this year has reached this standard, Lillian Benson. fl 233 l 1 t l 4 1 I l t Tradition has long stood high in the mind of every Steubenite, in his school activities. The Service Society too, has its traditions which will carry on far into the future. The annual tag day of the society raises money to sponsor a Christmas Party for the boys at the Parental School, at which time refreshments are served, and a gift is presented to the cottage. A fairly recent activity founded, and carried on by the members is the Von Steuben Servicemen's fund. One penny a Week is collected from each student, and is deposited in a special fund for the Servicemen and Women Who attended Von Steuben. Gift boxes are made up from this fund. These packages consist of a magazine, razor blades, candy and other articles of necessity, and are mailed monthly. To date the society has been very successful in this project and will con- tinue With it for the duration of the war. U29! TRI HI Y LIVES UP TO ITS MOTTO! Where children enter and citizens emerge. The Beta Tri Hi Y is only one of many organiations that have a part in helping each girl to live up to the Von Steuben motto. Gur purpose is to create, maintain and extend, throughout the home, school and community, high standards of Christian character. We uphold our purpose faithfully. Our ideals are high and our goals, un- limited. Fine character and a great spirit of cooperation make no task too difficult. During the semester We have served our school and community, and taken part in various social activities. We have learned the meaning of hard Work, but also of good clean fun. The help we have gained through our school and the Young Men's Christian Association has been an invaluable con- tribution toward the functioning of our club. The members are loyal to everything the club stands for and undertakes. The Von Steuben Beta Tri Hi Y is based upon everything that is fine and decent. We are very proud of it! The Tri stands for the good keeping of the mind, body and soul. Hi stands for High school in which this organiza- tion is formed. Y stands for our place of meeting and also our sponsor- the Y.M.C.A. The purpose of the Tri-Hi-Y is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school and community, high standards of Christian character. Our slogan is pure thoughts, pure words, and pure actions. In the Alpha Tri-Hi-Y there are 47 girls who meet bi-monthly and combine in their program, social events and service projects which this semester are directed toward our nations War effort. We have collected cakes and cookies for the Servicemen's Center, decks of cards for Hines Hospital, and We sewed hospital gowns for the hospital. Our well-rounded program contains such things as business meetings with speakers, picnics, splash parties, dances, and service nights. The girls are grateful for a club of this sort and feel that all teen-age girls should have the chance to belong to such a fine organization. my The thirty-five members of Von Steuben's Iunior Red Cross club are aid- ing our armed forces under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Sheridan, sponsor for the past four years. At present the girls have completed shoulderettes, sewing kits, utility bags, and shoe bags. They are now making a beautiful Afghan of many colors. The Flying Squad is composed ot boys, Who because of their ability, their dependability, their good sense, have been chosen to serve in school emergencies. Their help has been gratly appreciated. Miss Sheridan and Leo girls have also made aprons tor refugee children. Boxes of clothing have been sent to deserving people all over the world. The stage crew is made up of a group of students organized for the purpose of aiding the school and its organization through stage productions. The time consumed by a presentation is only a small fraction of that used in practice. Some of the programs put on with the help of the stage crew in the past Were, running Wild, 4A Talent Show, Trial by Iury, R.O.T.C. Frolics and other assem- blies presented by the school. NA. . These boys and one girl have formed this club for the purpose of uniting their knowledge taken from actual experience. Photography is definitely not a confined subject for it covers any field that is desired. l MIMEOGRAPHY ROOM: Our mimeography room at Von is a very busy center. Student secretaries cut stencils of guide sheets used by every student in the school. Many of our students become so proficient in this line of work that they receive a rating in the armed forces. THE VON STEUBEN MOVIE CREW: The Von Steuben Movie Crew is a school club, or- ganized for the purpose of showing in the classrooms, the many educational films issued by the Board of Education. In addition to this task, the group trains new operators each semester to replace those who graduate, and is responsible for the care and maintenance of the school's projection units. K 134 j SIGHT SAVING Our sight-saving room is the brightest spot in the building on a dark day. The soft green interior decoration and the indirect lights are an inspiration. New shades, just installed overcome glare. The equipment is planned to relieve eye-strain and help the students make a success of their Work. SKILLET SISTERS ACT AS ASSISTANT HOSTESSES Guests of Von Steuben appreciate our spirit of hospitality. The Skillet Sisters help to make this possible. They are the busy bees behind the scenes who prepare the meals and the trained waitresses who are responsible for the serving. Chosen for their classroom ability, their poise, and their alertness, the Skillet Sisters understand the art ot homemaking-an art which finds expres- sion in sharing with others the joy of a task well done. THE CORRIDOR MAINTENANCE CORPS CLEANS UP Since its beginning, The Corridor Maintenance Corps has advocated a spirit ot cleanliness among the students of Von Steuben. Its specific aims have been to keep the corridors clean, the stairwells order- ly, and the school grounds neat. This year the C.M.C. has added responsibility due to Von Steu- ben's all-out drive for victory. f135j Bottom Picture Eleanor Spielman, Beatrice Schatz, Alma Top Picture: Norman Mittman, Lorraine Mandela, Reva Zaslaw Marvin Moss, Rita Hart Zlotnik, Lillian Kornfeincl, Edythe Pearlman, Mary Lou Petlin. PROGRESS lt was necessary to sum up four years of good times, to peek into the classroom, to extract the great moments from the high school play and the tense scene from that unfor- gettable game, so that Progress might preserve the episodes of school days. The scenes the camera has captured are, for now and for a lifetime, to make one remember, to give one laughs, to have one think. The happiest years are the youngest years spent in the best places and with the greatest benefit derived. The school is the incentive for activity, and Progress is the stage, the footlights, and the scenery around which is revealed the drama that has made the child a student, that has made the student a citizen. Pro- gress will bring the past to the gates of the future. Progress will nominate the faces and names therein for a place in the esteem of today's classmates grown to adults. The name itself is representative of the contents. It has been foremost among high school papers in its presen- tation of news, features, humor columns, and editorials. The Iournal has not only been instrumental in making bond drives, pep rallies, and school shows a complete success, but has taken an active part in these important school functions. lt has been the policy of the Iournal to solidify student relations by working hand in hand with the student council of the school. As evidence of the high standards that have been continually maintained by the Iournal, the National Scholastic Press Association and Quill and Scroll have awarded the paper excellent ratings. The Iournal stands as a symbol of encouragement to aspiring young students who have started upon their journalistic careers. H382 ALAN KATZ and PAUL IANKAUER ..,.............,..,.,,....... The cuts returned by the printer are labeled and tiled for future use. Periodically, outmoded cuts are sent to the scrap drive. Cub reporters must learn to vary their news leads by the use of different grammatical be- ginnings. Here we see a group studying leads which have been analyzed for that purpose. Grammar is decidedly func- tional in the journalistic process. A picture is Worth 50,000 words. ln View ot this, cartoon- ing has become an important feature of the newspaper. In high school this still holds true and gives the talented students an opportunity to display their artistry and ingenuity. 5140 j WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THE JOURNAL The importance of the interview in high school journalism cannot be denied. It gives the students an opportunity to develop techniques which will aid them later when interviewing important personages. Corporal Iohn Belden was furnishing in- teresting material for our reporters above. Material for the Iournal is turned in by the editors, columnists, and reporters and then typed by the typist working on the paper, or by those supplied through the com- mercial department. All material is typed on uniform sheets of paper. In the fourth estate a term such as proof sheet is not common. However the proof sheet is important. It gives the editor a last minute chance to correct errors before you, the public receive the Iournal. f'l4Ij STUDENTS PRACTICE WHAT THEY LEARN I The columns that appear in the Iournal represent a cross-section of the student body. All years are represent- ed and all interests find a place, Whether it be sports, R. O. T. C., fashions, humor, or interviews. We Work together and plan for new Ways and ideas to be used in our paper. Who? When? Where? Why? What? l-low? These Words represent the outline of the newspaperman when he Writes a neWs,lead. By studying the leads in our metro- politan papers the student learns the Ways of journalism and practices them in school. Stand still, smile, hold it, that's fine. These Words are uttered by the staff photographer as he attends various social and athletic functions. His job is to get photographs which are interesting and tell a story, as he explains here. 042.1 ' Before the paper comes out it is the job of the business staff to get ads, and take care of bookkeeping and financial matters. Make-up of a newspaper requires knowledge of typography and layout. Best composition is achieved by studying the plan of metropolitan newspapers. Thus, through the use oi a modernistic make-up, the Von Steuben lournal acquires a professional ap- pearance. f 143j Top Row-Bochner, Sheldon: Melinqer, lack: Iankauer, Paul: Miiell, Merle: Liebow, Ioe: and Berkowitz, Walter. f Bottom Row-Epstein, Alvin: Weiss, Marty: A Favish, Larry: Weinstein, Le Roy: and Bauer, Burl. S3 K Q V K Q. ti ig' A Fine Old Game - Basketball The game of basketball as it is played today is comparatively new, having its origin in 1892. Dr. Iames Naismith, an instructor at Springfield College attempted to devise a game to till the br h b eac e- tween the football season in the tall, and the base- b 11 ' ' ' a season in the Spflflq. The f1YSl game of basket- ball was played with a ball slightly smaller than the one used today, two peach baskets were placed on the floor at opposite ends ot the court and the team consisted ot nine men. As the game progressed, the rules gradually changed with it, and today a basketball tea ' m is com- posed ot tive men. The baskets are now placed ten te t b ' e a ove the floor which makes the game highly exciting. It is a team game demanding a high degree of accuracy, and self-control, judgment, individual skill, and ' 't' ' 1n11at1ve, and tends to make an athlete physically and mentally alert. Basketball is one of the most popular games play- ed in the United States today At Von Ste b ' . u en it is the dominating sport and the students are enthusiastic about the game. Little did Dr Naismith know that the game he devised with the two peachbasket S, would grow to its present day popularity. usa! THE GAMES OF THE 1944 SEASON Basketball at Von Steuben has enjoyed one of its most successful seasons since the school opened in 1933. The Iunior Basketball team went asmfar, as the playoffs, only to lose to the great Mar- shall Iuniors in a very exciting tilt 34-33. The Senior team also fought gamely in the playoffs but succumbed to a highly favored Austin five 44-31. With the beginning of the practice season, back in November, the Iuniors captured their first six games but were upset by a scrappy McKinley quintet 37-35. The Heavies won five games and lost only to Wells in an overtime 43-41. During the regular season the Lights , led by Captain Sid No- vak, Won their first six games, and Went into the quarter finals. The Seniors Won eight games and lost to Amundsen and Waller. Though neither team Won the championship, the season Was con- sidered a success because we beat Roosevelt, our arch rivals. 1154! N GOOD ATHLETICS MAKE GOOD BOYS SWIMMING The practice and sport of swimming has been a popular event ever since man first learned to remain afloat in deep water. Von Steuben High School has a wonder- ful swimming pool and its students enjoy its use at all available swimming periods. A strong swim team represents our school in most of the scheduled swimming com- petition but more important is the fact that all of our pupils are given an opportunity to learn how to swim. BASEBALL Our Von Steuben baseball team has proven its ability by defeating Lane Tech. 1-0. We are now considered as a possible contender for the Chicago Baseball Title. We have Won eight games and lost two and if the same can be repeated during the rest of the schedule we will participate in the playoffs. SOCCER Last fall our soccer team completed its most successful season since we have taken part in the High School soccer tournament. The team finished in second place next to Lane, who won the City Championship. Next season we hope to do better since many boys will return to participate for Von Steuben. f'1S5j ALL SPORTS ARE FUN . The goal for all ot us today should be to develop mind and body so that We can serve our country to our greatest possible capacity. Our ath- letic and sports program has been a great factor in reaching that goal. f156j Q N X if wg 'Q GOLF The Von Steuben Golf team place second in the 1944 Illinois State qualifying compe- tition and will leave for Peoria, Illinois next week. Golf is a fine game, requiring great physical skill and control. Many of our students are fine golfers. THE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM Every year Von Steuben calls upon its boys to participate in the Cross Country Race held in Washington Park. Mr. Mag- ida directs and trains the boys for the 2V2 mile course. The boys accept this par- ticipation willingly, because of the body building advantages. 4 Luke View, Harrison, Sullivan, and Amund- sen all fell before the flashing spikes of the Von Steuben Iuniot Track Team. The young team, captained by Amy Robinson, will be the backbone of the Senior team in years to come, gaining their experience now. TRACK TEAM Men of the Cinder pathways, ruler of the wooden runway . . . that's Von Steuben's gallant track team. After furrowing through bad years Mr. Magida has come up with victorious lunior and Senior teams. Being successful in meets with Amundsen, Lake View, Harrison, and Sullivan, two members of the teams qualified for the State finals. Realizing the need for greater knowledge, the senior class ot the Von Steuben High School met with repre- sentatives trom the various colleges and universities of the middlewest At this time they were given all information concerning entrance requirements, scholarships, school ex- penses, and the subjects offered, Each student was given the opportunity to speak individually with all the representatives, in an endeavor to find the school best suited to his needs. The life oi a nation is going to depend upon the leader- ship which we as the leaders of tomorrow give to it. It is important, therefore, that each student choose the right school, for it is in college that We receive the foundation which will enable former Von Steubenites to interpret what they learn and to express themselves clearly and intelligently as citizens oi a new and better world.
