Msfary af Scizaal PUBLICATIONS THE WARRIOR and THE PAPOOSE have long been a source of pride and joy to the students and the alumni who helped in their infancy. Of the two, THE WARRIOR is the older, having been begun in 1927. At that time it was more a program given out at the presentation of the Senior play each spring. With the growth of the student body and the addition of more curricula activities, the annual has grown. Don Mike Stothart planned the first resemblance to a real yearbook in 1941. A year later Joe Turner became Editor, and the Feature section was added for the first time. Until 1948 the school continued to have the book printed and given out at the Senior play, but plans were made to have the book Iithographed and sell the copies. Mary Alice Bourne, the 1948 Editor, put into effect this idea. THE PAPOOSE was first started in 1936, under the editorship of Dot Tyson. The first two editions were mimeographed, but the staff soon graduated to the printed edition. Winnie Hartsell served as Editor for one year, and James Files edited the 1939-AO paper. THE PAPOOSE in its present form, is a tribute to the work and the inspiration of the many editors from the beginning to the present time. BAND Prior to 1937 the band was directed by a private tutor. In 1937 Mr. Richard McCluggage came to Vivian as a full-time music instructor for the Vivian schools. Many honors have been be- stowed on this organization in the last fifteen years. They have been invited to the Cotton Carnival in Memphis, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and the Christmas Pageant in Natchitoches. In 1941 this organization participated in the National Band Festival in Jackson. In September, 1950, they were invited to represent Louisiana at the Mid-Century Music Festival sponsored by the Texas Music Association in Dallas. O I
