c. L. MACKEY PRINCIPAL VIVIAN HIGH SCHOOL VIVIAN, LOUISIANA N-Oxrenl-ber 18, Parting with Seniors gives us a feeling of mixed pleasure and regret. we are glad that you have almost com- pleted your high school course. we rejoice at your success. At the same time, we regret that we shall soon have to part with you. You have been a pleasant class to work with. When you have not agreed, you have apparently been content that the majority should rule we wish each of you abundant success in life. You should decide soon what you will do. You should prepare your- self so that you will succeed. While you should try to select some work in which you will be happy5 it is possible to be happy in any work for which you are well prepared. Those who go to college should be prepared to do some hard studying. College work is quite different from high school work. Do not wait until your grades are low to begin hard study. We think the school system of Louisiana is a good one. we are glad that it now takes twelve years to complete a high school course. we believe that our school compares favorably with others in proud of this school and of you. This class is there are more boys than Louisiana. we hope that you will be that we shall have reason to be proud somewhat unusual in that at this time girls in the class. Q2C?M,.,Vf C. L. In Memoriam Our school has been deeply affected by the tragic and untimely death of Billy Mcliendon, a member of the 1950 graduating class. To students and faculty members his passing has been a great loss so it is with deep emotion that we dedicate this page of our yearbook to his fond and lasting memory. In scholarship, in personality, and in influence Billy was an outstanding student. Interested in many things, always courteous, and studious, he had the respect and admiration of all his teachers and classmates. Alert and at- tentive, he applied himself with an all out effort to performing his school du- ties. Regularly on the honor roll, his name appears high on the 1950 honor roll of the senior class. Billy's excellent scholastic rating led the faculty to select him to the important place of president of Quill and Scroll, honorary journalistic fraternity. As the capable manager of the Warrior, the school yearbook, during his senior year Billy further displayed the practical side of his nature. In a quiet, unobtrusive way he devoted his time to the accomp- lishment of the ideals he had set for himself. Billy McLendon was a member of the Vivian High School Band for eight years and Drum Major the past three. He played lst chair Solo cornet and appeared as soloist on many concerts. He was awarded the title of outstanding band memberv in his Junior and Senior years. Billy, as he was called by his friends, always had a smile for every- one. He encouraged numerous pupils to put forth their best efforts into pre- paring a football show or concert for public performance. Many extra hours were devoted to activities which required detailed plans and on numerous oc- casions he sacrificed his own time in order that various activities were a success. A very outstanding quality was the ability of taking instructions and seeing that they were carried out in a dignified manner. Through this medium Billy McLendon exerted a quality of leadership that gained him respect not only of his fellow classmates but the members of the Vivian High School Faculty. The influence of this youth cannot be measured by what he did so much as by his actions. Many adults have expressed their deep respect because he would never fail to say hello',. The pupils of the Elementary Building were his friends not merely because of his friendliness, but of the cheerful way in greeting them. Billy had made acquaintances not only in his own community, but throughout the State of Louisiana. His funeral attested to this fact in the presence of many friends made in band trips to festivals in Bossier, Homer, Haynesville, and Natchitoches. The passing of this youth is a tremendous loss for Vivian High School, but his spirit will live for many years to come. In adding a personal note, it was an inspiration to be associated with Billy because much of the success of the Vivian High School Band can be attributed to his personality and in- fluence. 1 I I 3 l 1 1 l ,.
