Heavy immigration, the depression and World War II presented such chal- lenges. Once it was necessary to weld the great variety of immigrant cultures into one: citizenship and social education were the needs of the day. Then instruc- tion in the wiser use of the extraordinary personal leisure caused by depression became the prime con- cern of schools. More recently, physical fitness was the overriding need during the world war and the schools had to meet that challenge, too. But with the changing tides of times come new challenges. Now that Explorers and Sputniks have appeared on the horizon, the old sense of national urgency and intemational competition reasserts itself. Science and mathematics now become the prime order of the day. But no matter what the current demands may be, the schools will continue to develop good thinking men and women - tomorrow's citizens. Sincerely, ELM, Q :Janie Vice- Principal Dear Students, 1957-58 has been a good school year at Vista High School. We have seen an increase of our enroll- ment to approximately 825 students. Six new class- rooms have been completed and construction has started on the beautiful new cafeteria. The school's program has been expanded with additional courses being offered in several areas. The caliber of scholastic work accomplished in our classes has been very high. The Class of 1958 has achieved an enviable rec- ord. They are to be especially complimented for the leadership they have provided in Student Govern- ment under the direction of Student Body Officers of this senior class. Noteworthy revisions have been made in the Student Body Constitution in order that t.here can be increased participation in a more democratic Student Body government. My congratulations to the Class of 1958 on their graduation and my best wishes for future success. Sincerely, that Principal Mr. Elmer Harritt, Vice-Principal School Board Mem bers: Larry Thomburg, Lahoma Curran, Kenneth Baber, Robert McNeal, and Don Sharp. 2307l 2690 ZQ76 3253 62, ooo 66,000 IO, 000 A DA ff, ooo 28,305 .,,,,, ,,-,, Auf Mig, U. ,Ju .,...L!.L2 -1.31. .A 43, 71 1 4-0,909 .1 r ...W L ,plan Wllham P. The hrst semester council set out on its term ot' ofhce with two dehnite goals in mind. The hrst project was to establish a student court which would make the student body conscious of its responsibility toward self-goyermnent. The second goal was to develop new rules for ASB elections based upon national election procedures. This allorded the students greater participation in student government and a bet- ter understandinu of state and national politics. The hrst semester council wishes to thank the student body, administration. faculty. and Klr. Brostrom. the council advisor. for all the help they haye Qiyen us during our term of ol- fice. Without the cooperation of the student body. none of the Qoals could have been ae- complished. and this Council would like to be the first to congratulate you on this wonderful accomplishment toward making our school a better place in which to obtain an education. Business Nfanager: Vern Grogan, Sophomore Class President. econd Semester Student Council Dear Students, The principal project of the spring semester ASB council was organizing and launching the new election procedure initiated by the preced- ing council. This system promises wider and more enthusiastic student participation in ASB elections and student government. The small and active student affairs com- mittee, subsidiary to the Activities Committee, was organized by the council to encourage stu- dent work in scholastic, artistic, and scientific areas. The student council, assisted by its able sponsor, Mr. Brostrom, also was responsible for special assemblies, the annual Hobo Day, the exchange assembly, and the athletic and scho- lastic awards assemblies. Though there still are many problems to overcome, I feel that Vista High School has benefited from the efforts of this and preceding ASB councils, and has a sound academic, ath- letic, social, and extra-curricular foundation.
